IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it.

So I couldn't figure out why I couldn't draw today. Turns out I wasn't feeling the form. On the 10th re-draw I finally figured out that shadows lie. DO NOT TRUST THE SHADOWS! Especially looking at photos / videos. Sometimes the form is really subtle and your eyes track the shadow instead of the form.

Once I started ignoring the shadows things finally started to look right. I learnt today that shading is pretty forgiving, you can do pretty much anything with it. But the underlying form has to be correct or you're fucked. And shadows lie. Don't trust the shadows.

>> No.4393576

??? Why would shadows lie to me?

>> No.4393578

>>4393576
Cause they're assholes that's why. Ignore all shadows / shading and look at the form. Sometimes the form is really hard to make out and you have to put your nose on the monitor and stare at a 1% difference in pixel colour. I wish life-drawing didn't cost so much and I was so poor, I'd go draw from life instead. But hey video is doable just harder.

Start from a plane where you know the orthogonals, e.g. the ground. And find the tangent of the ellipse that lets you rotate from the ground to your arbitrary surface. Do this twice for two different points on the surface and where they intersect is the vanishing point of all orthogonals.

You have some good things going on here Anon. Good sense of directional lighting and proportion of the face. Main critique I have is with your edges. When drawing feminine faces you should always be thinking soft edges as many hard edges/plane transitions give a more masculine feel to a face. I think some of your highlights too are misplaced for the forms they're representing, like on the tip of the nose for example.

how in the world do you shade?
the light is coming from top right, why is the banana in shadow?

Because the stem on top of the banana is casting that shadow. It's blocking the light.

4393791

>>4393763
You're not understanding where in space the banana is sitting. This isn't a shading issue, this is a spacial issue.
Point B is where point C is casting the shadow. The light goes from point C to point A. The banana is curved, so point A and C are at the same depth, and point B is further back.
This is why drawing from life makes it easier, because you'd see the spacial relationships and either change the angle, or understand the depths in the scene.
You're also somehow drawing everything from a higher angle than the photo. In the photo, you cannot see the dimple in the top, where the stem is, but you've drawn it. You're also not capturing the actual contours and shapes here. LOOK closer at what the objects are, their contours, and their position to each other, and the depths of the scene, and where the objects sit. Then worry about shading.

i tried drawing from imagination, obviously not aiming for realism but i have a couple of questions

obviously my ink lines arent good, im using a 0.5mm fineliner for my lines, but i feel like as soon as i ink and erase my sketching it loses all sense of personality. I liked how it looked before inking and now it looks soulless to me. i guess what i want to know is how to make my drawings look nicer after the sketch has been erased

second question: i used a brush pen for colouring but it leaves streaks everywhere, am i doing something wrong? is it the ink im using? the paper? I have a black one which isnt nearly as streaky.

You have yet to post a finished drawing.
In the end you'll be good at construction, but you'll have no idea how to actually finalize it.
Maybe that's already the case, and that's why you keep posting random skelly drawings instead of actual character drawings.
I know some of the criticism in these threads can be harsh, but most people are seriously trying to help you but you just ignore 99% of the things people tell you.

Just think of it as a simple weight attached to the arm that rotates with it.
If the arm goes up, the scapula will rotate with it.
That's it, there's not much more to it.
There 3 muscles attached on the inside that insert into the humerus, and the rhomboids which originate from the spine and insert into the medial side of the scapula, but you rarely see that one.

Either they don't know how to draw or they don't remember the difficulties they had when they learned ( but it's strange because you keep learning all your life ).
If you have fun doing what you are doing keep doing it .

Sure, any type of drawing is still drawing.

honestly id say its a case of mileage, assuming you are doing measurements and correct construction. So it will come down to practise more and also practise the features of the face idiividualy as you still arent drawing them realistically, and even if you dont want to draw from imagination, having that 3D form of the head in your mind will help you focus more on nuances than other basic things.

>> No.4394671

I reckon you'd do well to just drill in a base set of average proportions and measurements which you can fall back on. Generally speaking its far more important that you're drawing is at least correct in its own right and not so much that it's a perfect likeness.

It's an attempt. You're not ready for work like this, but attempts still count.

This is a mish mash of symbol painting and poor understanding of how it all works. You need to focus more, and put as much attention to everything, as you did to the breasts. Starting with form - the pose looks awkward, and like she has a broken neck. The upper arm and shoulder are not a straight line like that. Hair has a shape, and it's not a thick rug like you've fcreated. You have too little mid-values. You have no skills at blending, and transition. You don't understand how things like eyelashes are actually constructed.
Slow down, go back, work more on the foundations, like blending, capturing the form, contour, and breaking out of symbolic representation, especially if you're working from a photo. This is above your skill level, you'll get to this kind of work eventually.

Draw bigger.

This isn't awful, but the small size is causing most of the problems, and you're using the crutch of scribbles standing in for actual details.

Good attempt, but the left hip is too far out. The right leg is awkward. You're too focused on small lines, when you should be looking at the overall contour, and measuring, so you don't make mistakes like the left hip. LOOK at what you're drawing overall, and put as much attention to the whole form and contour as you did public hair. That shows us what your real focus is.

Learn to measure. Your proportions are all over the place.
Also, LOOK at her face. All you did is draw the eyes and mouth and nose where you think they are, and surrounded it with a head shape. Look at the slight angle to her head - but you drew it straight on. You're missing big things, focusing on the small details. And, where are the shadows in her eye sockets? They are some of the most important features to define the shape and volume of her face.
On top of that, you're symbol drawing as well. Look at her eyelashes. They are fine, with barely any liner, if at all. Your drawing? Thick, and with liner. That's symbol drawing, you think eyelashes are supposed to be thick, with liner. Look at what's actually there, it's right in front of you.

I fucked up on the tilt of the head, but i didnt just draw the features and then add a head around it. that's clearly what it looks like though so ill try and improve that

I did actually try to add shadow to the eye sockets, but i wanted to err on the side of caution by not making them too large or obvious because i thought female faces are supposed to have softer value changes. I have some understanding of the facial structure which i tried to apply in pic related, i just struggle a lot more with it when using pencil i think.

as for the eyes and eyelashes, I drew them fine initially, and it didnt look very good to me, so i made the decision to make them thicker. I was following this girls tutorials for facial features https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KYtsicYVuE

Complete and absolute /beg/ here.
Whats some base-level advice to start thinking about shading on a human figure?
I've got a item that I've been drawing out for the last couple days trying to get to the point where I at least absorb some of the concepts involved but am having trouble with shading and depth since I'm not really sure how to think about it aside from "think about where the light is coming from". I was looking through the shading thread but it seemed to be more about technique rather than the concept.
How do I think about this, pick colors, and make shadows the proper size?

I think a lot of these arguments happen because people end up talking past each other.
"You should know how stuff works." What does that mean?
If it means, "you should at least look at an anatomy diagram to know what goes where", then yeah, spending at least some time looking at anatomy books is helpful. It certainly never hurt anyone.
If it means "you should adopt the specific methods of a specific teacher like Loomis or Hampton" or "you shpuld be able to fully render realistic figures before attempting stylization", then I think those things are false.
"Know how stuff works" could mean a zillion different things. Some of which are helpful to people whose goal is stylization/animation from imagination, and some of them not so helpful, or indeed actively harmful, as they can send you down a rabit hole that distracts you from more useful activities. So when you tell someone "learn how stuff works", you really should specify what that means in terms of an actionable study plan.

What I'm trying to say is that in the end it doesn't matter how much anatomical knowledge you have if you don't know how to apply it in an aesthetically pleasing way.
This is what most /beg/s get wrong.
Yes, you need to have a basic understanding of anatomy.
But that won't teach you how to actually draw.
The only way to learn how to actually draw is by looking at other people's drawings.
This is something that the east has figured out years ago but somehow we here in the west don't understand or maybe don't want to understand because we think that copying is somehow wrong despite the fact that all art is derivative.

That's sort of how drawing gets done though. Even pros spend a lot of time drawing "presets" that they've committed to memory. If they have to draw a completely unfamiliar pose they'll probably try and find a reference. Why do you think photobashing and tracing over 3D models are so popular? Did all those pros just not grind fundies enough?
I'm not saying that drawing from pure imagination/first principles is impossible. I'm just saying that you're naive to think that if you just had enough knowledge then it would be easy to draw any pose from first principles. People learn to draw with more of a machine learning approach than a propositional knowledge approach. You train yourself on a massive set of references and then your brain starts working out patterns. You don't just download anatomy blueprints into your head and then you can draw anything like a 3D modeling program.

Real life. Draw from real life. If you're a furry, draw real animals. If you draw people, draw real humans - preferably live models, but nude photos can work if you're broke. If you draw machines, find photos of real machines.

Devolution comes from detachment from real life, and valuing gimmicks (like the eyeburn sparkle coloring in your picture) over improvement of foundations.
