Personally I just really love reading in general, but honestly the practices are far more important then the theory. So you can get away with skipping a lot of the writing if you really want.

A strategy I also use is I decide how long I want to take to finish the book (usually 1 month) and then use some simple division of total number of pages/days I want to spend and that gives me how many pages I only need to read a day. If nothing else it makes it feel a hell of a lot less overwhelming.

It's the right series. I have many of the books - some physical copies, many from here, some from torrents, and some from VK - but the book in the OP was one I stumbled upon at Half Price Books. The funny thing is that I actually bought it *twice* (I didn't remember having already, despite its spine being clearly visible on my shelf in >>4350151), and ended up selling the nicer of the two copies on eBay.

Volume 8 was also hard to find. I'm not sure why some of the books get passed around and others don't. You'd think there'd be some completionists out there who'd want the entire series just to have "The Whole Collection", whether they'd ever use them or not. The "Colored Original Drawing" special was useful for me because I don't draw digitally; I still do things the old-fashioned way with Copics.

It's gotten to where I need a list on my phone to avoid buying ones I already have. I prefer the physical copies, but at $10.00 apiece, I don't know that I need The Whole Collection. I will flip through them, and if I think it's useful, I'll usually pick it up. Plus, I like to grab the Antarctic Press stuff with Robert DeJesus and Ben Dunn (another fellow Texan) in it, as I have been a fan of their work for a really long time.

For Volume 8 ("Super Basics" - you think that'd be Volume 1, huh?), I had the store in Watauga do an inventory check, and they had the book shipped up from a more distant store for free. Then I just went down to the Watauga store and bought it when it came in.

Volume 8 is another one I don't have a digital copy of.

Probably obvious, but a major book I see come up a lot in my studying is "Nine Letters on Landscape Painting", and The Getty Museum has it online legally for free http://www.getty.edu/publications/virtuallibrary/0892366745.html so yeah highly recommended read, and don't let Amazon or Barnes and Noble or whatever trick you into thinking you have to pay for a copy.

Have any Russian figure drawing books been scanned? Majority of them aren't instructional, just filled with fuckloads of the best figure drawings. I'm gonna be honest, when it comes to refs you're probably going to be better off buying a book over hoping for scans because high image quality is vital and the vast majority of scans aren't very good.

That said, I have this book and highly recommend it for images of specific plants (not good for full scenes though). I think there may be used copies selling pretty cheap too. You'll just have to make sure you have space for it because it's physically fucking huge.

DK publishing makes some really outstanding stuff, my all time favorite is probably this: https://www.dk.com/us/book/9780756667528-natural-history/ but using their search they have something about practically everything with high quality photos, and a lot of it is meant for kids so it covers a lot of the basic info very simply and can be obtained practically anywhere for dirt cheap.

Humans Of New York consists of high quality photographs of a huge variety of different sorts of people and I've seen a lot of cheap second hand copies around of it too (though it could just a local thing). They also have an instagram account.

A book I don't have but I really want to get (and I'm not sure but we may have had scans of at some point) is Athlete by Howard Schatz. It lines up professionals form different sports side by side in minimal clothing so you get exposed to a large variety of different body types.

Another is Photo Ark which is a photo project aiming to collect high quality images of endangered species.

This is a very general request but I figured I'd put it up while I do research on my own. I'm looking for books with detailed, explanatory diagrams on different machines/equipment, like, visual encyclopedias with crosscut stuff explaining how things work and how the different parts interect, to help with my visual anatomy and form for non-human subjects. I’m taking a break from drawing poorly made anime girls due to poor fundies. I’m really enjoying trying to do animals like this book in Ink. Does any other anon have a good book on how to draw animals? (trad strongly preferred as I have plenty of fine liners, but digital is also accepted)

why don't you just get a book about painting fundamentals with a physical medium like watercolors (or better yet acrylic) and just apply the fundamentals to your medium of choice? There are millions of books like that such as alla prima II and color and light.

Hell, you don't even have to go to painting books for that. Lots of books on figure drawing and perspective talk about the relation between light and forms.

Or perhaps i'm misunderstanding your question. What exactly do you mean by painting fundamentals? If you can't answer that then you may need to re-examine what fundamentals you need to learn

Not ADHD but I have other mental health issues that get in the way of getting shit done so I'll tell you what works for me. Obviously it may not work but hey it's worth a shot.

One thing I do is break stuff up into managable chunks. I feel super overwhelmed when I think I want to complete a 300 page book or whatever but if I just look at it like "I want to do 2 pages a day" I feel in control.

Another trick is the 40/20: you work for 40 minutes and take a break for 20 minutes, rinse and repeat. If that's too long then again, make it smaller chunks like 20/10 or hell 10/5. You can mess with the time a bit as well like 30/30 but supposedly 40/20 is "ideal".

3rd thing- make a designated space where you only and always do art. Doesn't need to be fancy just some clean table space, but it's important because your brain will eventually "learn" that when you're there you're doing art and immediately switch into gear for it.

I have both ADHD and depression, myself so take this with a grain of salt. The hardest part for me is actually starting the task, it may be different for him but my solution was having a ritual to actually start drawing.

Little things that built to actually drawing. Usually it was stuff like turning on the lamp on my drafting desk. Once it was on then I had that nagging me to sit down and get out some paper, and then make some random marks. Then try to do a quick minute long sketch based on that. After that grabbing the next sheet of paper and starting on an idea I had while doing the first one was easier.

I would say if he has difficulty reading then something like https://www.quickposes.com/en might be a good place to start, because you are just trying to do it rather than reading step by steps. I don't have much trouble with reading myself but that's where I started. Might try a draw along video or two if that doesn't work.

Also the taking breaks thing mentioned before can be good if you are having trouble with the sitting still part, but might be a double edged sword if you get distracted by something else.

Also, Adderall. I know a lot of people are opposed to taking medications, but if you have ADHD and haven't at least tried Adderall then you are really just hamstringing yourself before you have even started.

It's a great book. Miller did a lot of work for Games Workshop in the early days before the Dark Age of Technology. Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is full of his stuff. He also worked with Ralph Bakshi on Wizards. Many of the background set pieces - especially the ones from Skorch, the lands of the mutant wizard Blackwolf - are matte paintings made from his artwork.
