not the guy you were replying to but my go to method for learning how to draw in a certain style is to do some research and create a mood board in paint of the elements i like, and then analyse them once theyre all together in one place. then i try to extract what i like from them, what makes them all special to me or whatever and at first just try to copy/trace it. then i try to draw it without looking, and then finally once i understand how it works i try to use it in my own drawings. hope that helped, even though its kinda a basic bitch explanation

Also, the direction and arc the punch is being made in correlation to the direction the other guy was being knocked back by just doesn't make any sense and fails to convince me that it was anything but a sissy-tickle flower-power punch. Even just a cursory study-up of boxing or mma and you'll know that there wouldn't be any power behind a punch like that when most of the weight of the punch is being transferred to the shoulders while the arms look like it's just noodling about. In that particular pose, the full weight of the punch wouldn't happen until after he keeps following through the arc of the swing and by then he will quite literally be facing the opposite direction of his opponent.

It's not that your poses are stiff, they just don't make any damn sense. I think you'll have a better grasp of conveying energy if you understand better how punches work.

Nta but I think the main thing your poses are lacking is realism. You have strong lines of action, but since they do not correspond to how figures move in reality, they look awkward and fake. There is no shame in using photo reference to give your art extra believability, compare pic related to your top right sketch and see how the lines of action are completely different. Even trying to act out poses yourself can help you better understand how they will work.

Think like a used-car salesman and try your best to sell your scene to the audience. You want to convince your viewers of something whether it be how powerful an impact was or what have you. That's why the most popular moments to depict action that many artists default to is the lead-up and follow-through (when someone is winding up to punch something and the moment after something has been punched): both of them engages the audience to think with their imagination as to the power of an action. When you draw the exact frame a fist makes contact with a face there's less action because the audience is only aware that something has been punched, but cannot yet understand how powerful it was. Also, I did a quick glance at Willard Mullin's work, and it seems more as though he's more interested in "depicting a moment", rather than trying to "capture" a "scene". Like in this picture here none of the poses really try to sell the idea of punches or any sort of action other than telling us they're punching and dancing around and the way the characters are drawn are all there to further the idea they are slipping around in the boxing ring. He probably looked at a boxing match and thought to himself, "wow, they're dancing around in there" and wanted to draw something to depict that. Another artist might look at the same scene and go "daaaamn, that punch was raw" and try to draw a scene to depict how powerful that punch was. It's all about having the idea in your head, having something that you focused on, and trying to best depict that in your work.

That's a good way of putting it. Plenty of comics have had some pretty intense fight scenes depicted, but if I do a comic I want it to be funny. Depicting the fight through the look glass of each character involved would make it more personal, and keep the audience focused on what the characters are thinking. And if that's incongruous with the intensity of the fight itself, or at least what we think of when that word comes to mind, that could be some real comedy gold there. In the last couple years I've come to believe that the characters themselves are the story, since it's not like you're gonna wow anybody with a story that's never been done before. It's how you interpret it through the characters that makes it so they can do anything and still keep your interest, even if it's just them eatin a sandwich.

Taller cat's whole lower torso definitely needs work. The thigh/pelvis connection looks ghastly even if she's really skinny and the distance between her belly button and her privates is extremely short. Shorter one's shoulders and perspective of the arm don't go together but I sadly can't redline now. Those caught the most attention
