IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

This is sorta my first time using this thread for a critique so I'm sorry if the post is a little weird. This is the latest delivery I made for someone on /v/ and I know there's a lot I can work on, so I'd like to get some feedback to hone in on what needs work. Especially if I'm going to be drawing for other people, I'd like to make my deliveries more acceptable.

I agree with the other, the light gradient is TOO subtle, to the point where details blend and the subject loses discernible shape/characteristics in what comes across as an unintentional/unproficient manner. Easiest way to put it is the cloak is too fucking bright for other areas to be pitch black, just doesn't come across like a real light source.

A decent idea would be background details giving an excuse to develop the character's silhouette against it, so you can keep your subtleties and mysteriousness of the character without making him part of the wall.

I like the use of downward lines for shading, let's you get away with denser/darker ones to indicate a sort of shading that people would associate with oozing or decay while keeping congruent with your style. Adds to the creep factor.

That said it otherwise feels like an art piece focused on visual storytelling, and I think it's a little played out. That and Dr. Smiles is a bit too tongue in cheek for the happy smiley crazy mad scientist archetype.

Basically yeah, if your work isn't pro level then it's /beg/. That seems to be the definition we've gravitated to.

You're actually improving faster than some other people.
Unfortunately drawing doesn't work the way you think it does. No one can "teach you how to draw" and then after they teach you you start drawing good. You have to practice for years, and for multiple years you will be bad. Then eventually you will be good. That's the only way to do it, no one can teach you anything that will let you skip those years of practice.

Dude.
Literally no one here just "reads Loomis" and then comes back with good drawings.
No one.
They read Loomis and they still suck.
Stop telling people that if they would just read X book then they would become good, it's a total lie and it gives people false expectations and it makes them feel bad when they inevitably fail to meet those expectations.

Find something you can get into Anon and you can connect that drawing. Then go step by step.

Random idea: Do you like fish? Look a picture of fish and draw different one every day fro ma reference.

If you get tired of it draw a different part of the fish like maybe a a magnified version of a fish scale, or an eye or a fish skeleton.

If you are bored with that draw something more loosely related to fish like food made out of fish or fish from characters from cartoons. or your animu waifus wearing fish costumes or being mermaids. etc.

At the end of the day it is just about connecting two topics together with one being something you are really into which can be anything really. And you do not have to marry that subject you can change the subject from "fish to crabs" (I am sorry I had to) for example.

The main goal is to find something that gets your attention and you are able to focus on, granted this is not easy but you can do it, even if you pick a different topic every day. Just make it "that day" make a day penguin day, next shark day, next I dunno flying saucer day and on and on.

made a little collage visual aid, some mtg art that may help you, i could see this picture being on a card or something, idk if thats what you were going for but anyway remember to also make your art readable i.e. make silhouettes visible even when the picture is far away, make clear distinctions between background and foreground and subject etc. look up swatches on youtube he has some videos where he makes mtg art / crits other ppls art and explains thought process

somehow the position of the sword doesnt look natural. it looks quite heavy for a skelly like him, unless he posesses a ridiculous grip strength he would probably bend his arm a little, making the change in angle less steep and putting some of the load onto his upper arm like top right of pic rel.
with the other pictures the pose and angle of the blade to character, in combination with the pose, gives you information about the strength of the character as well as the weight of the sword/ the speed of the motion.

Well it's a lot easier to tell that it's a lion this time.
Honestly when you're in the very early stages of learning there's not much point in asking for critique. The critique is that you should draw more, it never really changes until you level up a bit. I guess one of the most obvious problems here is that you weren't able to represent the lion's fur well, but also, going really deep into trying to learn how to render fur wouldn't be a good use of your time right now. Just keep sketching things.

In the divided rectangular grids you have there, the divisions are all almost equally spaced. But the divisions of the grid that are further away from you should be noticeably smaller than the ones closer to you. If you're going to use a foreshortened grid like that, then you should actually take the time to set up a horizon line and vanishing points and draw everything precisely. Otherwise it's not a very useful exercise.
