I only did so since we have no Singapore users. It's been lifted due to pointlessness (ever heard of a VPN?). Did it because it was funny. Predictably, and amusingly, it seems like it really got to him.

Alright I'm gonna say it, I'm disappointed at how some dads have been handling this whole thing. The more notoriety you get the more people are going to talk shit about your art whether it's justifiable or not. If you can't handle a guy with next to no follows then what's gonna happen when someone with actual followers criticizes your work? I know it's hard when someone shows your art in a bad light, especially when they have no idea what they're talking about, but it's one of the things you have to learn to deal with as an artist. Keep working and ignore outside distractions.

Hi Coin. So the main points I wanted to address in this paintover are:

- weak focal point. The image feels very busy, there are also lots of distracting elements and I find my eyes darting around randomly in the piece.

- the image feels "flat". There is not much difference in value contrast between foreground/middleground/background and this results in a weak sense of depth. Also the colors in the piece feel very "local" ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_color_(visual_art) ), which contributes to the feeling of flatness and leads into the next point:

- colors + general mood. This part is more subjective but imo the original piece feels a bit dull due largely to color/lighting choices. This is some kind of fantasy world, and the story here appears to be that this girl comes from some small town or rural area or wilderness and this is her first time in this big bustling city. The image should have a feeling of "wow!", of the wonder of experiencing new exciting things. With this in mind, the original feels a bit clinical to me.

The Biggest change I made was an aggressive atmospheric perspective pass (if you aren't familiar with this please read Color and Light by Gurney (also read it anyway if you haven't, and his other book Imaginative Realism - they are both must-read material for illustrators)). I also changed up the lighting a bit because I thought a half n' half setup would be more fun/interesting and it gives me a good reason to hide a lot of the foreground/middleground people in shadow(also the girl is looking up and to the right, so setting up the light this way felt right to me, like something over the wall caught her eye as she walked into this courtyard - maybe some cool building offscreen or something). Also I emphasized the warm/cool contrast between light and shadow and upped the saturation in the lighting a bit. The left column in this image is the B&W version of each piece with a Cutout filter to help you see the issues I mentioned.

I wanted to make a quick post about this because this piece caught my eye and I really like it, and I'd like to share this technique.
A fun trick you can do in photoshop that works well with images like this that are very graphic and have vivid color schemes is to make an adjustment layer ( such as color balance or hue/saturation) and tweak the settings to find an alternative color scheme that you like. Then apply a mask to the adjustment layer using the gradient tool (or an airbrush) to fade out the effect, creating a smooth transition between the two color schemes. You can use multiple adjustment layers with different masks like this to do all sort of neat effects!

Dads, what’s your ultimate goal for your art?
I’m going to be 30 in a few years and I honestly don’t know what my goal is. I just want to get better, but at this point I feel like I should have a better idea of a tangible goal in mind. I just don’t know where to start.
I tried doing the traditional route for a few years but I realized my soul just wasn’t in doing portrait art or natural/scientific type illustration. I’m somewhat decent at observational type drawing but I’ve always been drawn more toward more graphic design type/comic/anime shit but that world absolutely crazy to think of breaking into for me.

I just like anime/character-centric work, edgy fashion type shit. My natural inclination has always been more painterly and I just feel I can't break into that graphic heavy mold. I get into this rut every couple months where I feel like I should just give up trying to draw cartoons and go back to traditional work since I'm at least more capable in that.

I am just thinking, since it is such a big job to crit everyone, maybe we could have opt-in weekly crit circles or something. To get crit, you have to give crit to everyone else who asks, so everyone gets multiple points of view on their piece. It would be kind of like weekly crit sessions at an at class.

I had everyone giving crit to everyone else as pat of the idea because there is naturally going to be a range in the skill level of participants. While crit from /beg/s usually won't be as helpful from crit from more experienced artists, hopefully everyone would get crit from a variety of skill levels. The idea I have is just to give other people crit without putting all the burden on one person. Instead of one artist going super in depth with crit, you can get multiple smaller redlines/paintovers/crits.
