IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

I'm feeling very much like someone that would get posted on r/delusionalartists. I like what I did here but there are odvious major issues with it, even going down to the fundamentals.

The technical critique is that I have no idea what I'm supposed to be looking at. I guess it's a person? I think I see a jaw line? It's impossible to tell though.
The aesthetic critique is that it looks shitty. It's a bunch of random grey scribbles obviously made by an inexperienced artist.
It's ok though, we all have to start somewhere. I believe that you can get better with hard work Anon.

How is the composition and color use in this?
I really find it hard to judge my environments since you don't have the obvious feeling of disgust like with a bad figure drawing, so I can't tell the issues at all.

Also, how do you make an image like this look more "finished" without actually having to render out every single pebble with autistic detail? This is probably the most finished looking environment I have made so far and it still doesn't look finished at all.

Sorry, can't be too harsh. The tiger is pretty sick. Did you use any sort of references for it?
Overall something about it does feel amateurish but I can't put my finger on it. I guess the big solid areas of color aren't working for me but also it shouldn't be impossible to do a minimalist background. Maybe try looking for pro examples of covers/posters with more minimalist backgrounds and see how they're able to make their work feel more dynamic than yours.

Thank you, anon. The only refs I used for the tiger were just pictures of tigers on Google Images.

I searched up some minimalistic comic covers. Do you think that mines doesn't work because my main character is essentially just standing in front of the viewer? Cause the covers I saw had much more dynamic designs where things were actually happening.

Always pay attention to where things are in relation to each other. That's really the biggest mistake here.

For example:

1. (Red) Note the distance between the middle of the torso and either side in the ref, then note how you moved the middle more to the center.
2. (Green) Note the angle that the bottom of the feet are in relation to each other, then note how farther down the back foot is in your drawing.
3. (Blue) See where the knee is in the back foot in the ref? It's completely hidden. Yours is visible.

Things kinda start fine at the top, then they get messier and messier as you progress. Always pay attention to key locations of things in the ref so you can replicate it as closely as possible.

Also watch yourself when drawing harder poses. We tend to try to straighten out the figure to match closer to the neutral pose we're so used to (this is why you moved the mid line of the torso). Always check the relative distance of the center line from the sides so you don't fall into this trap.

Alright, notice how I’ve fucked with your hand a little bit. Start off your hands as sort of rectangular slabs. This rectangular slab represents the palm, and you will notice that it extends further at the pointy finger and gradually (BUT NOT TOO MUCH) gets shorter as you work your way down to the pinky finger. Also when you draw your palm, draw four circles (evenly spaced from each other) at the end of the palm, like I have here. As for the thumb, it needs to be on the side of the hand where the palm extends the farthest.

On to the fingers: your fingers have three different sections. The first section (the base of the finger, directly connected to the palm) is the largest section, just under half the size of the entire finger. The other two sections (middle and tip) are the same length.

PROTIP: make hand poses on your own, just look in the mirror and take a pic, or look online for references. I’m still really /beg/ too, so take my advice as you will. I’m just giving you my version of dealing with hands. We’re both GMI, Anon

Nice values. I think the sword is too high. Looks like it's coming out of his wrist. Also that's on the chin?it looks like his hand is touching his chin or something. If you put more detail to clear up what's going on it'll probably look really good.

I attempted a redline, the things I'd say to remember is that the pointer finger is shorter then your middle finger so when in that pose they should be realitively the same length. Also you've essentially drawn the face from the front but the jaw etc from a 3/4 angle. shifting everything but the right eye to the left helps to fix that problem.

I thought I actually went way overboard with the lava glow lol. I think I won't push that even further though. With the foreground I thought it's better to keep it less defined so that the focal point stays the focal point (that's why the lava on the top left has barely any glow at all)

Extremely fucking important. If you can’t make shit up on the fly during your painting process (which literally no-fucking-body can do except for Bob Ross) then you need to have a sketching phase for your paintings. Granted there are lots of e.g. webcomics and such with simple or shoddy art that have a lot of fans, so I'm not saying that you need to be an art god to get any viewers, but hopefully you understand the general idea. I did this drawing by measuring the verticle proportions of the image (with a horizontal reference), but even using this method, I always draw the subject too wide. Should I have a horizontal and a verticle reference.

I'm mainly doing this to study proportion, since it's my biggest weakness.

Suggest other methods that I can use to improve proportion accuracy.

The only flaw is, personally, I naturally draw very small because I'm so used to drawing digitally only.

Saying that people here would criticize Starry Night because it "lacks fundamentals" is such a strawman. There's actually a lot of abstract art that I like. One of my favorite paintings ever is Duchamp's The Large Glass. But I also want the ability to accurately depict humans in a range of different poses and situations. To acquire that skill, emotion is not enough. It requires knowledge and practice.
