I like the drawing and the angle but the light is confusing.

Inside a room, the ambient light usually is provided by the main light bouncing off things.
So, if it's daytime the ambient should be more neutral and the light outside the window should be more strong/white (our pupils are adjusted to the light inside the house) and if it's nighttime the main light shouldn't be this strong and defined(because the main light is already an ambient light) and also the color outside the window should be darker.

A cartoony artist who hasn't drawn in a while looking to start again here. I really wanna start with basic anatomy but every tutorial book I've looked at has just sort of confused me. Here's a recent doodle of mine, hopefully I can improve

Do you guys think the left one has legs on its own as far as being appealing goes without working on it any further or should I clean it a bit more? If it's already decent enough like that I would feel more inclined to do more in that style and it would help to increase my output a lot more. I feel you should think more about light, shadow, and value contrast. Right now all your values are very similar, which makes the piece difficult to read. I'd reccomend differentiating the values of the characters and background so they are easier to see, you don't have to do it like I did, this is just one example of how to do it. If you want a less dreary tone than the pic related you could try darkening the background behind the characters instead.

Yeah, ambient light is something I have been thinking about but I am not sure how to incorporate it well with the cel-shading. I have been looking at the way light comes through my bedroom window in the morning for reference, and the way the light works is very subtle in a way that makes me wonder if I should just go ham with gradients and soft shading or something to get it to look right.

Honestly I'm not good at all, barely passable, but what I did for rendering/colours was to study photos as close as possible without using the colour picker and as for anatomy/basics/etc I drew from life and drew along Vilppu's videos over and over. Anatomy for Sculptors is also a really good book for understanding what Vilppu can be a bit vague about sometimes

Nice colors! I think whatever it is that inspires you, it's surely some good stuff. I get the Flip Flappers vibe from those colors.

Not a redline or anything, but just some suggestions: I think in terms of lines, there should be some hierarchy between line weights. There are many different ways to go about it. Pic related: I used the good old thick lines for silhouette and large shapes, with gentler lines within those areas. The lines may grow thicker at areas of occlusion where two forms meet. The trickiest lines though, are those that you don't draw, but imply where it begins and where it ends.

I think your colors are on track; I did a color thumb just to see how it could turn out.

It's basically a small painting I did zoomed out. Its tiny size makes sure you don't fuss on the details and just focus on the colors. The rice filter at the end is just to further remove details.

I think your colors are already nice though! You just need a little ambience and shadows.
