IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

Appreciate the reply from last thread, will look into proper settings for digital art. Re posting because I posted right at the end of the thread.

I kinda wish I knew how to do better line-art and rendering, for example thickening of lines and understanding how and where to use it. I also want to learn how to do colouring properly, in terms of hair and softer shading. Also, just having problems with hair in general.

Based on my last post in /beg/ I was told to practice more proportions and stuff. So I made the "mistake" (or maybe not mistake) of improving my skills in perspective and form because I didn't know where to start when trying to learn proportion.

I tried using the pencil measuring idea, but I counldn't get accurate proportions and I couldn't associate how it related to capturing the form of a photo. Instead I decided to put more emphasis on negative space, based on the images am I taking the right approach to making my drawings better proportioned while keeping the form.

The first image is basically my attempt of recognising the negative space for each fundamental form in diffrent perspectives, is this relevant?

I knew I was a shit artist as soon as I realized I've never been paid for art and no one has ever asked me how I do something. No one says I really like your style can you teach me this or that. Never happened. But sometimes it's good at least to know. It's like if a girl breaks up with you. I'd rather she tell me my breath stinks or im ugly. If you're going to crush my heart and soul you could at least give me something to work on that might be in my blind spot. Got some sketching done today. Left was me trying to draw a male for like the 3rd time. I really did try to remember that males have muscles and are more angular than females. The right is an anthro version of an Aggron, a Pokemon. I also kept it more human than not, since I drew a thick woman then just replaced the head with the Pokemon head and added bits and pieces of the Pokemon parts. Hopefully I can get some criticism regarding my attempted male and thick woman sketches while I take a gym break. Drawing all day isn't too good for ya I think.

get some better lighting or adjust your camera settings or something, hard to tell with your picture. From what I can see, arms are too skinny, chess and face proportions are off, the way the right leg is drawn makes it look like its broken instead of being lifted up because its from the wrong perspective. Cloth ripples also need some work. Keep going, you're getting there.

Alright, anon, I'm going to give you a small tip because I'm a huge footfag. Feet don't have that weird 'butt' shape on the sole like that. They're like the palms of your hand in that, sure there is muscles in that shape, but you don't see them so pronounced like that. The only instance you'd see it is they were squeezing the sole of their foot together manually. See pic related, you can see the slight line in the middle, but artists often exaggerate it badly and it looks gross.

Can someone clarify for me -- do both of these count as chicken scratch?
I draw like the upper one a lot. I avoid the bottom as much as possible, but I don't ghost strokes either.
I just go for it, and when I feel it going off, I bail, and come back to it later. (Half a second later, but ygwim?) Sometimes I will touch up, like with the three shorter strokes.

Is this bad? Should I practice ghosting?

>> No.4369773

>>4369770
You should practice ghosting.

The first isn't chicken scratching and it's fine stylistically, but generally speaking you shouldn't be doing things just because your skill level isn't where it needs to be. If you want to draw circles like that you should first be able to draw a circle and then say "this is just how I like drawing my circles". But never "I HAVE to draw circles like this because I can't be bothered to learn how to ghost".

Same as with chicken scratching for that matter. Lots of artists have a sketchy style, but not because they can't draw clean lines. They choose not to. Never hide your flaws behind style. Fix them then decide your style.

So, when I posted the previous time, I just got told "loomis" and to study anatomy. I get the anatomy part and I do try to use irl references so I learn anatomy. I do just draw just to practice drawing, not everything I do I turn into a full drawing. But I will admit. I skipped reading loomis because I was told that it's a meme and that as long as I knew basic construction, it's fine and that drawing from life will yield better results. I did read Fun With A Pencil and got bored. I really did and I just stopped and decided to keep drawing with references. I really do want to make it, even if the crits hurt haha.

Okay, lines are still scratchy but getting a bit better. Don't have to draw ten lines and erase stragglers to get something like the line I wanted now. So it's a thing that improves with practice, and I'm not stuck in hand tremor country forever. That's a relief.

Last 3/4 pose with hidden hands before I start looking into how to draw them and feet. Eyes are after that, I only know how to draw one kind, looking at one direction, and poorly at that.

If you feel like it's really difficult and you don't know what you're doing you're probably on the right path. It looks to me like your figure drawing is getting better through your mileage, or through warming up.
I would say to use both imagination and study equally and see-saw between them regularly 1:1. You see what you don't know when doing imagination, and then that opens you up to learning more from your next study.
>>4371136
Actually I'd say the face looks quite nice compared to the rest of the body, though the body is easier to mess up because there's more to work on.
The most obvious issues would be what direction the hips are facing. If they are swinging to a side like the sides suggest, then the crotch isn't reflecting that. What I mean is i'd have expected it to be partially tucked behind one of the legs to the side. It looks like you just gave up on the legs though once you reached the knees. I think the knee direction on the left doesn't match the foot, and there's a lot going on on the other leg that i can't even begin to explain.
Reminds me of when I'm drawing from reference but the photo cuts out the rest of the person and I try finish the body with imagination.
I like your shoulders and phone hand though, good stuff.
>>4371182
Don't forget you can move the jaw lower when the character's mouth opens.
Is the line on the neck a choker? It's a little hard to make out what's happening there. The crotch is exceptionally wide but maybe that's the style you were going for?

It could be bad because you have to learn additional skills to see through all that compared to not needing to when using irl refs, so it takes longer to learn the same level of drawing.

Going through How to Draw. In pic related Scott draws the circle in perspective, but I have no idea how he determines the minor axis' angle, because there are not diagonal vanishing points being used. The grid construction he teaches in the previous page, as I understand it, it does not provide enough information to derive the correct orientation of the minor axis.

Same as the horizontal squares.

Am I being retarded for not getting it?

thanks for the redline. This was low effort , It was a lazy 3 minute doodle before bed + decided to add color , but I posted it because I was very happy as it wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting, I think I've improved a lot just comparing this shitty drawing to what I was doing 3 or 2 weeks ago in 20x the time. I feel I've been getting better and am working a lot faster just this past week, pic related I did just now in 1 hour and it's my favorite drawing so far. I will draw more through imagination - How can I think of things to draw though which aren't just people staring in a random direction (are there books on this sort of thing?)

A lot better than just linework. Light source reads well as other anon said, mouth looks like a sticker. Probably because you went straight for black. Think of the perspective of the lower jaw- from our perspective we should see the top of the bottom lip and a tongue, maybe see some bottom gum. I know zubat on the toons and game just have a black mouth with bottom teeth coming from nowhere as you have drawn, but if you're increasing rendering then you have to up the detail as shortcuts like that mouth will look bad carried forward.

cute drawing but focus on what's happening at your neck. You've implied with your clothing that the neck is composed of a rectangle up top and a glorified trapezoid below, which can work if you're doing a big musclebro but for a cute girl feels off.

>>4372129
you use less liens in your initial gesture, try to do that throughout. Also, check out how the neck connects to the chest and how the head connects to the neck. Everything else will come in time and with study.

>>4371759
this could be super cute if drawn just a little better. You drew your centerline, which is great, but it tapers towards the chin and moves further and further off. when you're doing a drawing like this, try imagining the simple shapes that make up the features (wedge nose, sphere muzzle, etc) and try to make the centerline follow those.

Also, reign in your hatching. It's a good start, I'd try working in pen if you want it to look really cool though

>>4371720
I like this a lot anon, just be careful with your line density. The bottom half of the top right figure is hard to read because of unclear linework. Like I told the other anon, try to reign in your hatching. Longer lines have more flow + energy than shorter lines.

the reason thatvit works in the reffernce you used is because she is laying on her back so it makes sense, but the way you drew it the torso is much more upright but tge legs are un the same position, so it looks like the lower back is either dislocated or completely warped

I felt compelled to draw a lobster today and when I was looking at some references the shell was reminding me of a motorcycle fairing and they're are so many cylinders and shiny surfaces I felt obligated to turn it into a robot.

but its really hard to tell from a first glance that its a robot

I disagree, when we look at creatures and humans we tend to look towards the face first, and that's where all the roboty shite is.

>how do i become proficient in a skill without putting in any time or effort into practice and exercises.

Just trace and steal and pay others to do it for you.

But you know... I used to want to build muscles so I joined a gym and got a trainer and I stuck with it for like 6 months. And the reasons I quit were 1) it was like 500 bucks a month which i could no longer afford. 2) lifting heavy shit is really hard and stressful. 3) i don't like getting yelled at and being in a stinking gym. 4) constantly cooking and cleaning in order to eat cleanly and get enough protein takes a lot of time and you get sick of eating like that and drinking protein shakes everyday. 5) i had to rush home from work to get a parking spot at my apartment because if you get there after 6 you cant find parking and then id have to rush to get changed, and run to the gym in the cold 3/4 of a mile away. and then walk home tired 5 days a week and in not such a safe neighborhood.

My point is the thing you're trying to avoid doing here is drawing pictures. It costs nothing. It requires zero physical effort, there's no cleanup, no other people, you can do it anywhere, anytime without leaving home, and people still try to get out of it.

I know it's just a meme and you weren't literally asking the question, but anyone having thoughts even similar to this meme does not want to learn to draw. They do not have a passion for it. They will absolutely never ever make it. You could not pick an easier skill to master. Everything is hard to get really good at. But you aren't going to risk a heavy weight crushing breaking your body or even being uncomfortable for one second. You can literally sit there indulging your imagination and fantasies and even that is too much to ask for some people.

You absolutely cannot, and that's what that picture actually wants to achive. How do I make my imagination and fantasies come true without 100000h of just emotionless circles and squares before that.

Nobody's forcing you to draw circles you goddamn autist. If you feel that the advice /beg/ gives is not conducive to your will to live, then don't take it. Just fucking draw.
