Why does every resource /ic/ use so line dominant? Everyone seems to draw and teach in a line dominant style. I've never seen anyone on /ic/ draw this way or anyone /ic/ recommended.
The book has a huge emphasis in blocking in masses and doing figures in a more painterly way

Drawing with line is an easier way to learn form. Once you understand form, you can go about it any way you want.

That's the party line around here, but I'm not sure it's really true once you get passed the "basic 3d solids in perspective"/perspective-made-easy stage. I would bet cash money that you'll learn figure drawing better and faster by going straight to this style of value drawing and skipping the plain line figures

Then do that, and let other people worry about their approach to learning. /thread

Because most people here (hobbyist/self-taught) are going to be drawing with pen or pencil and not charcoal.

I constantly feel like a retard because I struggle to represent form with lines and have much better success when I block things in. Everyone has their own methods I suppose.

Only weebs 'round here

Even working from tone masses for form expression, some type of "boundry" or "arabesque" line work is very helpful in setting out to accurately place light forms.

Especially on larger paintings/drawings, if you jump right into "shapes", you spend a ton of time trimming and remodeling to compensate for odd placements.

There's a STUPID QUESTIONS thread for little fucking beginner crabshits like you to ask your STUPID QUESTIONS in.

You know fuck all about drawing, and so you can't even begin to understand just how little you understand and are latching onto this one superficial application that's relevant to people who actually know how to fucking draw.

I swap these methods every 6 months or so. Starting with masses definitely feels more natural and free, but if I were to choose one and only way of doing things I would 100% go with lines as it makes you actually commit to your choices. Lack of ability to convey things using lines is the ultimate bottleneck, I think

Most people here are going to be drawing DIGITALLY, and could benefit from a value blocking approach.

>> No.4369283

>>4369192
And blocking in brushes suck complete dick in digital because you have to use masking and erasing more than traditional, and digital brushes look like shit without just the right texture settings you get for free with trad. The ideas transfer to regular people but the instruction won't transfer to /beg/s so you're better off recommending digital focused resources.

Agreed, after I learned the magic of painting, I still sucked with line drawing and spent 1 year just painting aimlessly.
I didn't improve an inch - maybe I even regressed in drawing. Now I've come back to making lines and I can see all these bottlenecks popping up that prior were merely smudged by ambiguous brushstrokes.

I feel like blocking in shapes is more for when you're copying from a reference. And realism/copying directly isn't nearly as popular or as necessary nowadays.
If you want you copy, digital art makes it easier to trace since you can use layers. If you really want to make realistic art, people just use 3D software anyways tho.
