>“…I never spent much time thinking about others’ art. I felt that if I wanted to become something, then I had to go after nature with all my interest and energy, seek what I loved about it, and desire to steal its secret and beauty. I was entitled to become as great as anyone else, and in that branch of art so commanded by me, watercolour painting, I considered myself to have already surpassed all predecessors and contemporaries…”

Probably. They worked towards that goal after all.
I think one can be aware of their level of skill while still having humility, though, so that doesn't necessarily mean they were arrogant. Humble and self aware people tend to be the greatest at what they do, I think.

They definitely had intense rivalries and grudges.

Probably something like film directors today.
>some guys just do TV and commercials for a paycheck and don't have a ton of ego about it
>guys like Spielberg with impeccable technique and all the best assignments who draw tons of sour grapes for being "soulless" "schmaltzy" "overrated" etc

Hokusai thinks himself as just beginning to be a good (not great!) artist at 70.

All I have produced before the age of seventy is not worth taking into account. At seventy-three I have learned a little about the real structure of nature, of animals, plants, trees, birds, fishes and insects. In consequence when I am eighty, I shall have made still more progress. At ninety I shall penetrate the mystery of things; at one hundred I shall certainly have reached a marvelous stage; and when I am a hundred and ten, everything I do, be it a dot or a line, will be alive. I beg those who live as long as I to see if I do not keep my word. Written at the age of seventy five by me, once Hokusai, today Gwakyo Rojin, the old man mad about drawing.

Edwin Landseer has painted some of the best animals and human heads I've even seen in galleries, yet he went through a period of great depression.
He was such a massive brain that he could draw two different pictures at the same time, one with each hand, when challenged.
