this is about as finished as it gets over the last year or so.

All I did before was make "finished" work before and it was all garbage because I was just symbol drawing for the most part. I had been drawing for so many years without any fundamental knowledge and it was crippling me. Doing nothing but the same head floating in space at the same angle or some heavily reference pose that I still would fuck up.

I'm not worried about finished work for now, I'm just trying to become a competent draftsman

I personally draw with my shoulder, I use it primarly to lift the pen, instead of using my wrist. Wrist is for details, shoulder is for long lines. By only drawing one line you will find that it makes it easier when you start doing lineart after the sketch, since you don't have to half guess where the line is supposed to go, as you've already got a good foundation with the sketch itself.

Moving the canvas and using your wrist isn't a bad thing, but only using your wrist will exhaust it quicker, and it's how you end up with carpal tunnel syndrome, which I don't wish upon any artist. But yea. I keep my arm rigid (not completely though, my elbow is still moving) and use my shoulder to guide the whole arm. I don't have any ressources for this though, it's just an advice I got from /ic/, and it has worked wonderfully for me. It just means you've got a lot of room for improvement. It is by struggling and struggling and struggling some more that you will improve. You can't improve by staying in your comfort zone. Draw somethign that you've never drawn before, or something that you have a hard time drawing. Never relax too much.

Because faces are the literal representation of a person. When you think of a person the first thing you think of is their face. It's a monitor into that person's actions and emotions.We see so many faces everyday whether IRL or online, we all know what a face looks like. When you're drawing and fuck it up you know it unless you're super dense. The key is to show the viewer your face is convincing enough that the emotion expressed is genuine. References are a good starting point. Copy them. Then attempt to recreate them using imagination. Learn to understand the muscles in the face, how one smiles and how it affects the cheeks, eyes, chin and forehead. Just LEARN what a face is. People say "LoOmIS" but honestly its just dissecting the broad into specifics and taking those specifics to apply to your own broad ideas. Once you learn the rules you can also figure out how to break them.

Your shadow shapes are nicely defined, which is good and brings out the form really well. I think the breasts are a bit lopsided however - you've drawn them symmetrical and facing directly forward on the page, but I think the ribcage points toward the left, and her right (our left) shoulder is a bit above the other one, which should pull that breast slightly upwards and outwards.

Heavily referenced hearth stone card, sketch looks okay, but the one hand I didnt directly copy is a disaster. Values look bad because it is sloppy but I think it also reveals I'm not think in 3d and I'm not thinking about the direction planes are facing to catch light.
