**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Keep most of your personal works for /alt/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

I'll share a habit that I've been doing for a while.

Inspired by canking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87FsO79zYwU

I go into https://shuffle.iggyzuk.com/
Using this board: https://www.pinterest.jp/ashukunyo/rl/
(or you could use any other board you like)

Then I get 10 random pictures, put them on PureRef. (https://imgur.com/a/DJUUaIK))

You can zoom in on pictures by pressing space, use mouse buttons to move pictures or to move the window itself.

After that, I just sketch all of them, deleting each picture after I'm done so that I don't go back to work on it later.

Been doing about 10 pictures a day, from life and from reference of artists I like. I don't use construction, instead I try to imagine the construction, so of course there may be some errors, but I think this practice is worth it, also done on cheap papers so that if I mess up I can always just throw it away, so I feel better trying to do more confident lines.

I've done construction with light lines on an HB pencil before, and while it leads to more accurate drawings, it's slower and feels a bit like a handicap.

Pic related is an example.

A tip if you're trying to colour over lineart that has a white background - do your colouring on a single layer set to Multiply, above the lineart
Obviously there are ways to extract lineart from backgrounds which are ultimately better methods, but if you don't really give a shit then that's one way you can avoid all those white pixels you have

Actually, a good way to do this is have the lineart layer on top set to multiply. Then you'll be able to see the color through the white background and be able to use multiple layers and layer modes to color without interfering with the lines.
In clipstudio, there's an option in I think the Edit menu called something like "change white to transparency" which effectively deletes white backgrounds, leaving just the lineart.
There's also a way to do it in Photoshop that involves copy-pasting the alpha channel with the lineart onto a transparent layer.

Assuming you have your lineart by itself in a transparent layer just go on the layer below where you applied the color and you should be able to do the finishing touches manually in a breeze and erase any remainder.

Assuming that for some reason you have your lineart together with a white background in one single layer, if you're using CSP you can go to [Edit > Convert brightness to opacity] which will eliminate all white areas and left your lineart untouched and from there work using my first statement.

Also working in super high res makes filling those little zones easier.

Hello there spanish speaking friend. I say you did ok. On your original reference most of the illusion of volume comes from the color, so its natural such illusion is lost if you're doing just the lines. From now on try to use better references and try to implement different line weight on some areas to add more form as in your reference. Keep at it you're doing good!

You did fine for both, but the original was kind of a messy image to study anyways. I think you should focus on more completed works before you study other artists' sketches. A lot of Japanese artists will just messily construct their sketches and only reference IF they want to finish the drawing, so as a beginner you wouldn't know what parts you should be copying and what parts are mistakes the artists didn't bother to fix.

Anyways, I think you're trying to study the wrong thing about the piece. This piece mostly has soft edged lines with heavy outlines and soft inside lines/also a bit of variation for depth. Take your version's eyelashes, for example. You drew them as basically a hollow object, but really they're a solid, thicker line in the original Also minor thing, but you ended up tilting the head back to being straight up, which arguably takes away from the original charm.

Hello again friend. My advice for today is the following.

If you're doing references of that size might as well also go for drawing the shoulders and hands. Hands are hard to properly pull off and are a key piece in conveying emotions, expressions or actions so all practice you can get regarding hands is good practice that will increase your gains.

You should also try the following. Attempt to do an anime head strictly from imagination. Bear in mind the quality will be lower when compared to your copies, this is normal so don't get discouraged by it. While doing this odds are you will probably find yourself stumped on a lot of places. When this happens you should make a note on what you are struggling with in order to reinforce that later when practicing. Reference is good but if you should alternate reference and imagination practice for a healthy growth.

Notice how shaky they are? They appear unconfident and scratchy. that can be fixed with some trad grinding - draw without using the crutch of an eraser or pencil at all and skip right to pens. For digital, just don't use the undo button.

It isnt a critique. That is something you should be able to figure out on your own. Do the work yourself. Study pieces you like. See how other artists do linework and emulate it. Everyone has a different style of line art.

I feel like the head is poorly constructed. Look at the difference in space between the eyes and the nose. And the eyes arent even the same size. This is stuff you have to train yourself to fix because its extremely basic.

As for the coloring, your shadows are incredibly splotchy. Perhaps Im retarded but I cant figure out the light source. It looks like the lightsource is directly in front of her but you have shadowed areas that should not have shadow.

In the real world people arent going to hold your hand, they will give their opinion. Learn to criticize your own work before asking for critiques.

A question from someone that is an absolute beginner (started just a little over a month ago).
Would it harm my progress if I combined regular art theory with the tracing of manga artists that I like to build up muscle memory ?
Asking since the OP has this image https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0 as the first line and I was worried that I'm pushing two opposing forces against eachother while studying regular western art theory.

>Muscle memory is a form of procedural memory that involves consolidating a specific motor task into memory through repetition, which has been used synonymously with motor learning. When a movement is repeated over time, a long-term muscle memory is created for that task, eventually allowing it to be performed with little to no conscious effort.

When you do long, smooth strokes, how do you prevent it from tapering too much at the end? That's my issue with it, it makes the line art look ugly. It's probably just because I don't apply enough pressure, but if I apply too much then I can't get a nice smooth line.

I just randomly got informed of that tip like yesterday.
It essentially gives a look to the digital lineart like how it would look if it was drawn on paper, since lineart on paper tends to bleed a bit beyond where the line is drawn compared to pure digital.
The guy that I watched called it a way to make the digital lineart look less sterile if that makes sense.
