IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

Sort of, but the benefits you get from quality practice even in digital will vastly outweigh the negatives that relying on tools like undo, liquify, or lasso might bring. Lasso and Liquify is basically erasing and redrawing with less steps. It’s still your hands making the forms and your eyes making the judgement, it’s not like these tools will magically make a bad artist into a great one.

The perspective on the iceberg or the penguins is wrong. The penguins look like we're looking at them dead-on, but it seems like we're looking at the iceberg from way above it. You'll need to decide which angle you want your viewer to be looking at the scene, and then match everything. Either show us the tops of the penguins' heads and happy feet, or show us the side of the iceberg and no (or very little) top.

you really should start drawing simpler objects before trying to draw figures. There is no foreshortening in the image you're drawing.you're drawing a head on top of a neck on top of a torso because instead of drawing what you're seeing you're drawing what your mind is telling you.Pick up easier subjects like fruits or a mug and try and draw exactly what you're seeing. take measurements and double check and if something is off fix it until it looks exactly like what you're seeing.

There are several issues, but I gotta say I like the atmosphere you're conveying here. It reminds me of a certain type of Christmas card.
But yeah, first off, the linework's kinda shit. Are you still working on it? You should. The houses aren't straight, the closest trees are sloppy, the water's not colored inside the lines. Some things, like the house walls and the hillside, don't have any texture.
Light source is inconsistent. Most trees look like they're lit from the side, from the right on the left and vice versa. Is it supposed to be the five huge star crosses? If so, all trees should be lit from the behind. And speaking of light, the huge planet should probably be brighter and have a much sharper shadow on it. High contrast, like how the Moon looks when it's not full. There is no ambient light in space.
The colors are really overdoing it. I do like the overall effect, but it's still too bright. Also, if that pink flower is supposed to be important, it should be more central to the composition, and if not, it probably shouldn't be so pink.
The perspective's wrong too, the closer trees are too small and the far ones too big.

I'm avoiding doing that. I've seen so many digital artists that do that and their colors are garbage and look like mud. I think it is important to have color in mind from the beginning of that painting. Physical painters someitmes do a monochrome under paint usually in red though, so I might try that out, but layering color on greyscale always looks bad to me.

Marco bucci even made a video on why you shouldn’t do that. It’s important to get values down at our stage so if you really insist on greyscale, you can do greyscale first then save the image and use it as a reference while doing color instead of just adding color on top of greyscale

I know I'm not supposed to expect some immediate leap because that's unrealistic and stupid, but I've been doing Loomis exercises and gesture drawing stuff for about a week and I can't feel even the slightest tangible increase in my ability to do things. I can draw a bunch of boxes and spheres with axis but I can't apply this to drawings without screwing everything up.

But more importantly I can't even tell if I'm doing the gesture drawings correctly. Practice is neat but I feel directionless as a newbie. Am I supposed to draw the skeleton beneath the figures? It's really hard to feel motivated when I'm not even 100% sure if I'm learning the right way. How hard should I be thinking when I do these? What should I be thinking about?

Post a larger, unobstructed version of the picture reference you're using for the pose, or post a link to it if you don't mind. It's hard to tell exactly, but it looks as though you're misinterpreting her left foot: the part you're drawing as the heel appears to be the front of her foot (the large swath of blue is the side of the toebox of the shoe, the sliver of beige is the sole of the shoe). The feet/lower legs in general need to be repositioned: if you change the position of the left foot so that the lower left calf/heel are hidden by the right calf, and use the same positioning of the left leg that you use in your first pink sketch it'll be closer to the reference, though I don't know if that's what you're after. At the least, fix the angle of the left foot.

best part is the hands. nothing else is any good. whats the point of constructing a head if youre gonna just put it at the wrong angle? on the one hand it looks like you used some construction that you drew lightly and maybe erased, but then... the lines you drew over it are all scratchy anyway, so i dont see the point. and also looking at those hip bones... you dontunderstand what you're drawing. it looks like one line that goes down from his back muscles, his waist, no hips, bno ass, down to his leg. like a blow up doll that you painted abs on.

you need to learn to construct a body. torso pelvis, hip bones, leg bones, ass, rib cage. do not simply copy.

I mean, that's nice, but doesn't really have much to do with what I said. Don't make assumptions about how people will be viewing your work. Leaving all the fucking transparency in is making a fairly large assumption about what kind of background it will be viewed against.
I don't know about that other anon, but the image here on the left is what I see when I open it in my browser. I had no clue what the fuck I was looking at. The middle is what it looks like when opened with an image viewer. It looks slightly more hand-like and some of the details are a little more visible I guess, but it still looks like shit. The one on the right is with a white background added, which is I assume how it is supposed to look.
You presumably want people to see the same thing when they look at your work as you see, so add a fucking background to it.

This is such an unnatural way of drawing, and I get that his whole point is to devolve everything to shapes, but I can barely do that properly and its fucking pissing me off. I can draw a circle okay, simple shit, but we're getting dangerously close to "draw the rest of the fucking owl" territory with some of these examples. The ear shape is a good example of this. m8 i admire your ambition but its very obvious that figure drawing is above your level. before you try to draw a whole person, i think you need to learn to draw more basic things first. ideally start with spheres cylinders boxes and pyramids, but i understand that is probably very boring, so at least you should just work on constructing heads, and then seperately drawings eyes, hundreds of eyes, noses and mouths. not whole faces yet, just each component, and when you understand how to draw a head, then you can work on putting the facial features on the head, and then do the same for the body. because there is no point in just telling you everything is wrong. i was out with some japanese friends last night. and one of them brought along a friend who doesn't speak japanese. and they kept asking him to repeat words and phrases. and he didn't know where one word starts and the next word ends. if you showed him a character, he would have no idea how to look it up even with a dictionary. he doesn't know enough japanese to use context from the rest of the sentence to try understanding a word he doesn't know. he has no point of reference because he hasn't even learned the basics. So my advice for him was ...yea you can learn some basic greetings and stuff, but really if you want to improve, you have to study the alphabet first. if you know the alphabet at least you'll be able to spell what you are hearing. then you can learn some basic nouns and verbs and grammar. I AM HUNGRY. LET'S HAVE SEX. And you can increase the complexity over time by building on things that you understand. If you can't draw a head, then your face is gonna look weird. So... good luck and have fun. For you... I say peter han dynamic bible, then watch some proko loomis head videos.

>> No.4358002

>>4357919
so... thats why i gave you the analogy of the language learner. It's not good for you to just repeat back a phrase. That is what you're trying to do. And what I'm saying is, you need to learn the syllables first so that when you repeat it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1HFb2WLm0M

Unless you know something about Russian you are not going to be able to repeat this back without sounding retarded. The narrator has to slowly break it down for you into parts that you can understand. When you can understand the parts then you can put them together. You don't even know what you're hearing the first time he says it. And the other thing that helps is having it written underneath in our alphabet. Otherwise you're like "was that a J, ...a Z.. is it like an sh? Should I be rolling my R like that? It's EXACTLY a perfect analogy for drawing.

The dynamic bible is peter han. i think you should do that first.
