Once in a while yeah. I found cool people to follow and got a few lads following me as well.
So, why the hell not?

I've lost my way with painting. I used to go out every day with a sketch book, I don't know. Maybe because it's winter and I'm tired. And my health has deteriorated. I'd be better off taking up exercise and quitting smoking and drinking than worrying about a canvas. I do feel a sense of failure. I'm always going to think if only I could have exhibited in 2015 or 16, You know? Instead it is as if my art was monetised in likeness while the art world routinely stomped on me. It wasn't deserved in my mind, I'd suffered enough, but ended up going through more unpleasant experiences while the rest of the world disco'd. I'm still clinging on to my little devotional piece . Again it was as if there was interest generated by it which can be disorientating so , it's sitting here waiting. Until such time as its completion. All of this for such a small innocuous painting. I'm reading Alberti and I'm taking it to heart , and ok, if I'm to continue I will learn the frame of the skeleton and how to layer muscles upon. At the Royal Academy of London there is a beautiful sketch being displayed of someone that did just this. I am also reading Gauguin, I'm not sure he would take to Alberti but his frustrations of the self in artistic identity I totally understand and read echoed in the publications of living artists today. And who on earth are the people he name drops? No one mentioning some of them today. I'm also reading a history of girlie pinups, the prints sold in their millions, the artist didn't see a penny. Time changes nothing and I smile in an empty room.

Incoming rant: Who here has been on Instagram for 2+ years?

For those who have - has your engagement rate just plummeted recently? Has the reach of your post been smaller and smaller? The amount of likes & comments I used to get in previous years absolutely dwarfs what I get now (even though I had fewer followers in the past). The past few months in particular have been inexplicably stunted.

The average engagement rate is currently supposed to be around 3-5%, in that 3-5% of your followers will like/comment on your post. For example, if you had 2000 followers, you could rely on ~60-100 likes per post on average. The average used to be much higher for everyone but it's slowed in the past 1-2 years (people scroll through their feed less and watch more stories), though some people still have higher averages and they really seem to be thriving. It's just so, so frustrating to see that your account - for reasons you will never know - seems to be less favored by Instagram's home feed algorithm than other accounts. I often see accounts with less followers have more engagement than I currently do.

The real kicker is this - While likes and attention are nice and all, that wasn't my primary goal of using IG. My primary goal was to get on the radar of certain art/creative directors for freelance gigs, and to stay on their radar. I had a few that followed me and it was great to see whenever they liked my work - it was an important confirmation that they knew who I was and that they enjoyed my work, and on a few occasions it lead to an opportunity. However, since getting fucked by the algorithm, I've inexplicably stopped seeing their specific likes come in. Because the reach of my posts has been diminished, I fear that IG is just not serving up my posts to these important individuals even though they still follow me.

Never got any traction with the page I managed and I've heard stories that even if you paid them for promoting you're stuff its hard to get any returns in landing clients or commissions. not the best place to shill your stuff.

Thanks so much! Pretty much all of my stuff is just drawn digitally from the initial sketch all the way to the end. It's all drawn in Photoshop CC with a Cintiq 22HD. I'll usually overlay a special blend of textures at the end to help give a sort of 'traditional' look to things, but it's still all digital.

Every once in a while, I might take a sketch from a sketchbook and draw over that digitally (like this tank) - useful if you want to maintain the looseness of a quick sketch.
