When I started learning Japanese my goal was to eventually watch/read the series I liked the most in their original.

It took me 3 years to muster the confidence to do it - on the way I'd read other "less important" manga and anime, ones that I didn't care about if I got things wrong.

With drawing it's the same thing - I can't do projects I really have an interest in cause I'm not good enough to execute it competently.

With language I was able to set up exercises that didn't involve reading my goal-series but still being enjoyable. With drawing I haven't found a way to set the same sort of short-term milestones to keep track of my progress, there's only long term skills.

I also already told you I didn't have fun with this, yet I acquired fun - I enjoy the language grinding. So shut the fuck up with ~le just stop doing it attitude, if I listened to some guru like you in the field of languages, I'd be none the wiser nowadays.

HERE'S HOW I GOT INTO THE HABIT OF DRAWING: Start SLOW

Draw for ONLY 10 minutes a day. The logic is that once you sit down and start working, you'll just keep working until you've drawn for an hour. DON'T DO THIS. You cannot fool yourself. An hour of work is an hour of work, and you will still dread it no matter how you try to trick your brain. Draw for 10 minutes, then STOP. Keep doing this until you get comfortable with the habit, then you can incrementally add time (5 mins at a time). And if you're feeling low again, cut the time.

The most important thing is that you practice at all, 10 minutes is better than 0 minutes.

Flashcards.

- Grind a few thousand "most common words", anywhere from 20 to 30 new words a day should be a good pace;
- Read some grammar on the side so you get the basic mechanics;

After you reach about 2000 words, you can start reading some books with a dictionary at your disposal and it won't be TOO painful. From there, instead of "most common words", add words that you find in your books that you think would be useful to learn.

Add some subtitled movies/videos to the mix (subtitles in the target language, of course) and keep going.

After you start feeling confident, start turning off the subtitles and only use them when you have doubts.

Once you're not using dictionaries that often anymore, drop the flashcards. Unless it's Chinese/Japanese. In that case, keep doing flashcards forever so you don't forget your ideograms.

I have one deck for vocabulary where I just look at the word and say the meaning, and one for actually writing the kanji, where I have its meaning/reading and I have to recall how to write it. There is a basic set of rules (full of exceptions) about going top-left to bottom-right, but it's mostly rote memorization.
If you want more info, definitely check out the DJT thread on either /int/ or /jp/, the resources are pretty good.

The most useful thing I learned from all this and I wish I could apply with drawing: even 15 minutes of study a day EVERY DAY beats sitting down for 6 hours once a week and studying a lot. Consistency is king, slow and steady wins the race, etc.

With drawing I'm still stuck at my old bad habit that got me nowhere with languages for years:

- Feel bad about progress;
- Study a lot in a short period of time;
- Burn out;
- Wait it out until I feel bad enough that I start drawing again.

It's all due to the lack of tangible, bite-sized goals. In language I can learn "X words a day", with drawing you will learn the same thing forever cause it's iterative, I don't know. CLICK, MOTHERFUCKER, CLICK!
