when it comes to "ref" that can mean anything from you had something that you glanced at a few times just to give you an idea all the way down to you straight up copied it, used a grid to make sure the proportions were perfect etc.

I don't want to see any of that. show me what you got. What can you do only from memory and imagination.

Also let's discuss other artists and how much of what they do is referenced and how heavily it is referenced.

It's good that you draw drapery, anon. But if you draw the figure underneath, it will inform you when you draw the folds involved and it will be easier to follow the curves of the body. You can go a long way with imagination if you keep volumes in mind.

Fabric cannot occupy the same space as the flesh underneath, so always make so that the curves and folds rests upon the shapes of the body. If you see the bottom of the coat, it's much straighter that it would be if it followed the roundness of the thighs. Same with a sleeve, it will always be as round as the area of the wrists it rests upon. Drapery is a lot about accurate curves.

No. I just took a bunch of my characters and drew them as being the same race as this gal in the center here, I don't have a name for it though. Some kinda colorful kobold/goblin things? That's all I got.
Anyways, it was a dual purpose exercise to see if I could keep them distinct and recognizable even as a different race, while also trying out some different face shapes and features on the race. To what end, I don't know, because I don't ever make any finished work anyways lol :'O)
I was inspired by Ryoko Kui racebending her characters during the two chapters in Dungeon Meshi where the party got hit with a case of the changelings. It's really cool how she makes each of the standard fantasy races look unique.

Another, used a ref to get a general idea of how to shape the broken trunk during the sketch stage, and one to figure out how to bunch up the yellow mushrooms, then did the rest (lighting, colors, textures, etc) from imagination.

Intuition and a little bit of know-how.
Once I read up on perspective and learned how to freehand draw boxes, cylinders, amorphous blobs etc. intuitively in perspective and got a good handle on it, it massively improved my drawings. I had some conception of construction drawing before but it wasn't until then that I really *got* it. Depth and perspective on a 2D surface are an illusion built on simple principles, and once you have an understanding of them you can do anything.

Before that I couldn't draw a landscape or a scene to save my life because I was taught to do that 1-2-3-point perspective nonsense where you put down your horizon line, your points, and then you draw stuff and it confused the heck out of me because it was putting the perspective guides before the actual stuff I was drawing. Maybe I was a little retarded, too. I've spent all my life drawing nothing but characters, mannequins and objects and it's only now that I'm getting around to actually drawing places since I was a young kid. "i only used a ref for this one part" doesn't matter. you used a ref. memory isn't ref. pictures and actually things in front of you are references. why is this so hard for people to grasp? you have like 40 other threads you could post your pictures in that you drew from ref. yes obviously you draw from ref then build a memory of how to draw a thing. that is what we're testing here. that's what we're showing.

Learn Loomis, vilppu, whatever method of construction drawing. Once you can into construction you can memorize and invent anything.
Of course you still need to study and practice but you won't have to rely on copying ref for everything you make. And of course do gesture drawing to keep your drawings lively. Walt Stanchfield's books are great for gesture drawing advice.

I mean what I say, I actually do each and every one of these things, I am speaking with integrity. This is who I am, what I do:

I do anime so I have to use ref when it's a character I don't know. I like to use my old sketchbooks as either hard or soft ref - very inspiring stuff. Sometimes I'll look at a friend's character, but usually it's one of my oc.

I always used to glance through my previous works as soft reference to get me going, but I've learned to rely on it less because it's much more convenient this way. I've developed alternate methods of getting me going - focusing on something good to draw. I often use soft reference, but I try to work without it sometimes. I avoid looking at other peoples work, especially on /ic/, only a little and I get frustrated, saves me an unnecessary downward spiral. Most times I don't use hard reference unless I need to, like in a high quality finished work. It's mainly for things I don't understand at all. I do use it sometimes.

I use reference in studies; but less these days. I don't find it helps much unless it's something I'm new to, often I find it better to remember what I've already studied. Because I've done it so much, doing it again rarely leads to anything new. Again, I do use reference in studies sometimes, foolishly hoping I'll get lucky this time. Obviously I will spontaneously reference something if it seems helpful. I save things in a reference folder for later use, but I haven't used it recently, I'm doing lighthearted work nowadays. Used it much more before.

Thank you.

I was one of the not so smart stubborn guys that thought using references was cheating, so I never really approached that kind of learning. Then afterwards, when I tried using references, I felt they had a negative impact on my style, because they removed the originality (mistakes build a style I guess) and made my stuff look too correct and generic RL looking. I guess you could call that over referencing.
This is the reason it took me about 10 years to get to a level where I thought I could actually make it as an illustrator.
Nowadays I tell everyone to use references as much as possible. It's just a much faster way of improving imo. Don't neglect drawing from memory though. That's a good skill to have.

yeah I know the theory, but do you actually do that? Have you ever actually expanded your range of capabilities by explicitly studying something you weren't comfortable with?

I am asking if you have seen that work in your own experience. That explicitly trying to do something you weren't comfortable with helped make an improvement. I don't just mean studying things you don't already know, not merely a study of something new (which someone might ordinarily do on their own volition) but occasionally seeking discomfort itself as a kind of study, or even as a part of everyday study.

I tried it once the other day, and I could see how the "danger" of it might help you to focus. I think it would expand my range if I kept at it, which is nice too, but I feel like the main benefit was actually just the focus. This is just my first time impression however, so I'm probably not yet accurate, that's why I ask.

Dude, I shared the other two paintings because the anon I was replying to wouldn't believe me when I said that I did the whole thing (minus the statue) from imagination. I shared the other similar pieces that I *also* did from imagination, but made it clear that I used reference for parts of them so they could easily see what I did and didn't use reference for, I didn't share those as an answer to the OP.

As for my *actual* submission to this thread, I legitimately cannot help you if you can't see the difference between using a reference because you can't draw something vs using a reference to figure out specific features of that something. I can draw a random statue from imagination, but I needed to know what *that particular statue* looked like. I pulled up the screenshot, sketched the statue's features, put the ref away and went on with painting. Is it technically using a reference? Yeah, that's why I fucking mentioned it, but I felt the way I used it didn't actually affect the final result as much. It's like using a reference because you don't know how to draw a horse vs using a reference of a particular horse to remember which side and what shape the white patch on his coat is supposed to be. Not exactly the same.

okay, so you needed ref for that specific statue. I think op was specific about the "no ref" because nobody knows how much of the ref was used and in which way, so NO REF is was specified. And you say you can draw a statue from imagination, then why do you need refs for a random rabbit a random bunch of mushrooms etc...?

Started as a shitty sketchbook sketch and I drew over it digitally. Based off my best memory of what a small commercial kitchen would look like (never worked in one before). I did know that the pre-prepped ingredients are a thing so tacos can be assembled faster, and the deep fryers are the best I can remember. I imagine dish racks, trash bins and sinks are also usually common place.

I don't understand how foreshortening works in perspective I guess. I just sort of guess. If I care about the sketch I'll just keep going with trial and error and I'll get closer but I'm really just eyeballing it. Even if they were cubes. And I want the cubes to be the same size but for their to be 3 more cube lengths between them. I have no idea how to measure that. In a flat angle you just count one to 3 but going toward the vanishing point I am clueless. Would appreciate an explanation if you have one.
