Artists draw for several hours across several days, just to have their image stared at for a few seconds and then forgotten in the endless sea of images that already exist.

Ironically you posted an image from a show that a lot of people have spent a lot more than a few seconds looking at.
I think what you say is true if we're JUST talking about artists who make a series of unrelated static 2D images. I have to admit that I've never seen the point of having an Instagram or a Patreon where you just post lots of art, and people look at it because it's... art, or something. But animation, comics, and video games have the ability to be a lot more meaningful and impactful to people. Those are the living art forms of today and that's where the most opportunity is.

What matters is that someone somewhere saw it, and now it's gone.

The feeling of somebody else appreciating your art compares nothing to creating something that personally excites and surprises you. External validation is meaningless, good art gets made because it has to exist, not because it has to be seen. The artist is both the taster and the producer, and if you don't derive pleasure from tasting your own creations, what makes you think other people will? Good work starts inside you, not outside of you.

The fun comes in making it and leaving an impact for those few seconds.

you swallowed the "fan art/ internet famous" black pill. I swallowed mine after seeing an infinite scrolling page of OC's for video games and comics that would never be made.
You're going to have to try to make real art instead of illustrations now.
Otherwise you're going to be like the rest of this thread. Coping

To chase the artist dream takes a special kind of stupid, one that goes against all biological urges.

If one has been bitten by the phantasma, the craze, the rage, the rush, to master the craft of visual art then there are no rules, only tools.

This is your dream, make it real or not, the choice is yours.
The painter sees the cherubim angels dancing and doth partake in ale or wine. Bread and Coffee are the only thing a diseased mind need muster.

Thy chariot is thy wrist, imagine pegasus dancing along thy fingertips and bend before the masters of anatomy, of form, of virtue, of virtue.

To study art is to partake in the good, the honest, the meal of man, the farmer never left us. We desire to see growth and we are not satisfied with the lousy everyday crop,

Some would like you to believe what you are doing is deception, so challenge the hater. Make your drawn chair cushion look so comfy that one would value the aesthetic pause above all else.

Then, Diana erupts and ye are left to the soul crushing and bone chilling dust motes of the everyday. Carry thy chalice.
Do no drink the miasma.

Brothers if you don't let other people see your art you wouldn't know if your art is objectively good or not and ignoring fans that might actually really like your art.

You're living like schizophrenic who masturbates to himself for his own pride.
If it only makes you feel good. I guess it's fine.

You can also just make an account posting your art not saying something and ignore what they want you to draw. It's not like you will be harmed in some way ?

To answer your "I never understood" part... I want to create comics for the exact reason you mentioned, because I want people to spend time with my work. BUT, to get that readership nowadays you need a somewhat established fanbase, and you get that fanbase by pandering to social media. So yeah, I have an insta and I hate HAVING TO do it, except:

1. It's good for inspiration and motivation
2. I'm building some friendships with other artists
3. I have people who regularly comment on my work (these are the people :most likely" to buy my stufd)
4. It pushes me to finish stuff otherwise it feels like I'm drawing in a void
5. I'll have an X number of people to market to when I get my comic done

What I don't understand is people who have an insta and don't use hashtags, connect with people, etc. It's a SOCIAL thing... you should use it that way.
