What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

Thanks, bro.

I'm so fucking inconsistent with everything I do. It's my number one goal right now, to be in a position where I know what to expect from my work, even if that's shitty art. I hate how any piece I make has bits on opposite sides of the spectrum and I can't figure out a solution.

Like in this one, I love the fur bits and the patterns on the shirt, but then the boots are absolute shit and I spent so long trying to get them to a place where I liked them but then gave up.

I dunno. Gotta keep grinding, I guess.

That's some nice character design, man. Love the cape (?).

sorry for late reply m8. I don't get (you)s often so I'm not in the habit of returning to threads fast.
(Disclaimer: I wouldn't consider myself great at lineart/crosshatching because I get really impatient)

Line confidence is essentially how intentional the lines look. So, long flowy lines instead of a bunch of short lines stacked over each other. The best example is probably the light parallel lines on your version's tshirt. Since you don't have to do any curves it's probably easier than the other choppy bits. It's tidy and cohesive compared to say, the lines in her right (left on the screen) hand, or the shadow in the coat. If I had to describe it, you'd want a line that you can tell where the EXACT edge is. Like, if you had to draw over it with the smallest brush size possible, you'd know exactly where on the line you should follow. That being said, that doesn't mean you should only draw with a thin brush. Think lines are fine and in certain situations better, as long as you're purposeful about how they're placed.
Also, it's important to be able to differentiate if you need a long, medium, short/ curved, straight, or curled line for a particular situation. Although you theoretically can make one long line with a bunch of small lines, it just flows differently and very often looks different visually. I am also personally guilty of this crime, but if you're cross hatching, I suggest you make sure you lift your pen at each line (unless you're going for a specific effect). Though, you're better off than a lot of other people when it comes to that habit. I mainly only see it near the bottom of the shoes and maybe a little bit on the coat/dark areas.

Honestly, linework is just a thing that comes naturally when you get better at representing form, so don't feel too pressured to only grind lines. It's just helpful to keep stuff in mind for the rest of your drawings.
Anyways, here is my attempt since its a pretty cool pic. Got lazy near the bottom though ngl

it's very washed out, ive been meaning to ask you btw what program are you using, i see you use a square brush with rotation and opacity, is that CSP? i cant create a similar brush in SAI from what ive tried and all i can use right now are SAI2 and Krita.

I would decompress the left buttock a bit as well as possibly giving the neck a forward slope and either repositioning the head more towards the front of the figure or pushing the gesture curve and lean it back further. the eye on the right also seems to be wrapping around the form of the skull.

Thank you. I did have trouble with the values, felt very timid about it. I'm going to try with another ref with stronger range and just go harder on the base colors.
The brush is the marker with I believe default settings. I use it for most everything, but the difference here is I didn't start with flats and lines, instead I laid down a "wash" and built it up gradually on one layer. A bit like watercolor.

The other anon put it well, you didnt even make the cylinders in her hand even. Why do you feel like you need linework over decent rendering? You outlined her breasts instead of properly implying the shape with values. Its lazy and looks bad.

Another example is her right forearm, the lines do nothing to convey form and as a result it looks flat and lacks perspective. If you insist on this type of linework, use a color that fits the composition and not black. Real shirts dont have random black lines at the folds, they have shadow. You arent inking, there is no reason to use black.

I also agree with the other anon about lightsources. The top of her breasts and her abs are in light but the top of her head, which is closest to a light source, is not.

I'll take it as a compliment? My sketches are pretty rough but I'm trying to practice clothing and how it stretches and sits. I'm not a big fan of realism but I can see the importance in trying to make an image feel "real". I still need to work on posing, line weight, backgrounds, expression and colour among other things but my goal for 2020 as dumb as it sounds is to try and bring some form of realistic anatomy and clothing to some heavily stylized girls to ground them and make them "real" in a sense.
>>4323154
Is good stuff and really expressive but isn't attempting to be anything else. Which is perfectly fine in its own right imo. However I think the intent behind our drawings are different and it can be seen in the works.
That being said I have a loooooooong way to go before I can even apply any of what I just said to my own work. Finding a good balance between style and realism is tough when you are a master of neither.

I'm trying to do pieces with actual composition but I'm not used to it so there's obviously room for improvement. I believe I have some clues about some of the mistakes I did:

The two main planes of the piece could be better contrasted by putting the cat further from the camera and the rat closer to the camera

The colours might make it a bit messy as well so some advices on how to pick colour schemes would be nice.

Maybe I should push the line weight a bit more.

At first it did not look like the cat and the rat were facing/looking at each other so I added the eye on the cat's tail to have a thing making eye contact with the rat. This led me towards making the cat into an eldritch abomination but now I feel like I overdid it and the thing is just crowded with details.

Thanks to anyone taking the time to crit this. Also, inb4 someone making a joke about Lovecraft's cat.

Lineweights and variations for sure. I think this image would be helped by giving the characters some bolder, more confident lines.
Also be wary of your perspective. A lot of your concerns with the line of sight would be fixed by staying aware of where your characters are in relation to one another.
One little trick to do is to make sure you have your perspective grid set up and sketch out your character's line of sight. This'll help you figure out if they'd actually be looking at each other.

It's definitely a requirement if you're a professional. Having an ergonomic workflow is also a must (if you're ctrl-zing every other stroke, you'll cripple yourself.

Exercise and stretching helps stave off tendinitis and other bad shit. Having an adjustable tablet stand, ergo keyboard, rollerball mouse (feels weird at first but holy SHIT it saved my hand from Adobe illustrator), comfortable chair, and possibly standing desk (used to use my windowsill; you could prop up a regular desk) help a lot.

If you're in America, all of this combined is cheaper than any medical work or therapy. I've been using a crank-adjusting IKEA standing desk and it's been great.

If you lift, make sure to stay really hydrated, especially if you eat a high protein diet (including whey) and/or use creatine. Protein, creatine, and torn muscle are processed thru your kidneys and if there's not enough water to process it you'll pee blood (it's usually just muscle fibers but it looks like blood). It doesn't hurt but you'll have to go to the ER to make sure you're not dying and you'll be out at least $2k WITH decent insurance.

Nice! That's actually quite a lot of improvement for just a few days. I drew your pic again if that's cool
There's a few things worth mentioning though:
1. Don't be too afraid to make things dark. It's good that your lines are neat now, but remember that no shadows doesn't necessarily make things less clean than if there were any. For practice, you can make a separate layer and add shadows to plain lineart. I'd say you should try this for basically every piece you line, just because you already spent the effort lining it.
2. Lines don't necessarily have to be too straight/smooth. It looks a little unnatural in certain places, like the shading on your version's collar, the hoodie strings, and a bit of the hair. Honestly, you shouldn't stress about this point too much. It's something that'll just improve as you're able to draw straight lines faster. (which brings the next point)
3. Try to draw your lines fast since it'll look more natural. Again, it'll also come naturally over time, but you can do a few things to practice it too. Just practice drawing lots of circles and straight lines fast as an exercise before drawing. Alternatively, once you get a little faster at drawing in general, just keep redrawing the same img in the sketch phase, then choose the one that turned out best for actually finishing.
4. Remember, you can also draw with transparent color(or white ink for traditional). What I mean by this is that some things you don't need to draw perfectly with just a pen. For example, the stitch looking thing on the pants, the shoelaces, and the hoodie strings. What I did was draw them with a thick black brush, and then used a thinner version of the brush and drew over the thick line with the brush set to transparent mode. It's helpful for making things look a bit more consistent.

in pic related, I made her a little shorter because she seemed too tall, but disregard if that was intentional. Keep up the good work!

I'm not saying this to stir anything up, but I think you should go back to fundamentals. Your art isn't on the same level as others posting in the thread, you need to continue figure drawing (Will Weston courses aren't uploaded yet, but photos on his Instagram should help you see how to use 3d forms to sketch a body in perspective) and start practicing drawing drapery more seriously. You should be able to get more feedback from the beginner thread and not worry about stylization yet, your anime style will improve with learning the fundamentals (you will observe more and it will be easier to achieve to result). Best of luck in future
