Trying to figure something out, if you wanted to paint a surface that wasn't just one flat color (it has a symbol drawn on it, for example) how would you apply light and shadow to these separate colors to make them seamlessly look as though they are on the same surface?

In pic related I rendered the green surface first and then added the pink thing on a separate layer. In order to make the pink look like it was a part of the surface I locked the layer's opacity and tried my best to paint on darker colors that lined up with the shadow on the green surface. Obviously not the most accurate way to do it, which is why I'm asking for help.
I used to use multiply layers as a quick fix but that comes with its own baggage and annoyances, so I want to learn how to do it properly.

I see what you mean, I turned it to grayscale and it looks like the values don't match up. So all I would have to do is make sure the values are exactly the same between the two colors, assuming the light is hitting them both in the same way?
I'm a bit confused though, because I know certain hues have different natural values. but I don't know if I'd need to take that into account here.

>>4299167
I'm not sure if you mean adding the symbol on a new layer and then shading the symbol on its own to make it look as though it's a part of the surface (which is what I tried to do in my first post), or make a new layer and applying the various colors of the shadows there. I tried the latter on the bottom half of pic related, although I'd have to get used to paying attention to my edges a bit more.

>>4299174
I do vary my hues, but I'm not asking about how to render a surface in general, I'm asking about rendering a surface that is made up of different colors

>> No.4299246

>>4299232
I mean adding a new layer and making details that will overlap both layers. Like shadow. Light. Texture. Etc.

>> No.4299270

>>4299246
Oh, I see. I did mention in my original post that I typically use multiply layers for shadows, though I also use a bunch of other layer modes too, for various purposes. I can technically keep doing that, but I want to be able to complete a painting using only (or at least mostly) normal layers. I think gaining the skill to do that will just make me a better artist overall. Otherwise I'd continue to rely on crutches without being able to pick good shadow and light colors on my own and whatnot.

Sorry, I get what you're saying now. That's a smart way of doing it, adding in details over iterations, but what I meant was somehting like this, what if the armor had streaks of red paint on it. Like how would the red change as the surface of the armor curved away from the light, in contrast to how the original brownish gray would change. Pic looks strange but you get the idea of what I was trying to say.

I guess I'll get there by just experimenting more and trying to paint as well as I can. I might just not be skilled enough to ask questions properly

Did this for a "draw this in your style" thread the other night but it got deleted, tried a bit of colour experimentation over a scanned micron and marker image in Photoshop. Thought I'd post it here.

>>4298796
Great study. Your sense of colour is really accomplished
>>4299060
I feel like you have some really strong values but I'd maybe watch how sharp the gradient of the light on the head is. Makes the forehead look a little too blocky. Maybe it's just me but it's slightly too sharp.
>>4299136
Nice concept, feels like you might have rushes the arms toward the end. They feel a little lackluster compared to the rest of the drawing.
>>4299159
In my experience trying to blend colour on multiple layers is over complicating things. Try using different opacity of brushes or different passes. You should be able to recreate the kind of look your aiming for on a single layer.
The examples of the metal armour below can be done first using a soft light on a brush to get the murky gradient of the metal and then adding finishing touches using a hard light pass on a brush for the contrasting light and dark of the hard reflective light and deep shadow.
I'm still learning layers myself but I always fuck things up when I try to layer colour across multiple layers.

I've often taken on projects that are too ambitious or way beyond my skill level and I've had to drop those after working on them for over 50h. You don't want to do that.

Try doing a single character in a cool pose instead. Having a simple image that looks good is way better than having a complex one that doesn't work.

Spent the last couple days doing color passes on this thing over and over. I combed over some other artists' pics to see how they achieved their vibrant looks and in the end I think the whole process is more intuitive for me now, but there's still some stuff I need to correct.
What exactly is it that makes an image dull or vibrant? My goal isn't really realism but juicy colors, so more than anything I want to avoid picking combinations of colors that make the thing look dead

Those are two entirely different career paths. Character design has a heavy emphasis on, well, design principles. You don't have to make it look polished, you're expected to get work out quickly, and focus on making interesting designs. So its all anatomy, costume study, color theory/psychology and design principles there. This market is also pretty fucking saturated and nepotism runs rampant so you have to network and get all buddy-buddy with other artists that might recommend you for gigs they don't want, or people who might be your boss some day. The issue with character design is its becoming more common for the artist to sculpt it in a 3d modeling program, so you may need to learn zbrush.

Illustration requires much more knowledge and polish for your work, and is much harder to study for and execute well. However there's more work to do especially if you're good at what you do. If you want to do both jobs, you should study more for illustration and learn the few extra skills for character design.

Also age doesn't matter, nobody cares as long as you're good. Learn your fundies and practice every day. I don't know about getting there in 1-2 years, it really depends on how much focused study you do and if you have anyone who's pro level to give you critiques and tips or mentor you.

Go back a few steps. No amount of ornate detailing can hide a bad silhouette and posture. Nail the larger shapes and ideas first before adding details on top.

Style choices aside, too many undefined, pillowy shadow shapes make the face lumpy, and create disagreement with the contour.

You're right on all points but I think it's kind of neat too. The perspective is definitely fucked.

- The castle is really fucked. If it's reaching the sky, those doors and stairs should be ~kilometers away. Actually, from this angle, you wouldn't even be able to see the top of the castle if it's reaching the sky. It would just go out of the image... You could move the castle 5km. further from us and then have it reach the sky but now it's just... Yeah.

- You shouldn't be able to see any individual blades of grass in the BG.

- Be more subtle on your atmospheric perspective so it gets bluer gradually as we go further. Now it's way too abrupt. All the rocks are just plain white and I have absolutely no idea how far away they are.

- Either change the color of the main character or the color of the sky. Having blue on blue doesn't really make any sense here.

Random bro-tip for your anatomy (before you've retained everything by studying):

I'm doing a muscular character sculpt right now and when I need some reference from weird angles and I can't find them in Google, I'll just look at some models that other people have done. You can spin them around and check all your shit from different angles.

https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/anatomy-in-action-study-01-8a55729648454e6b9f9169d6222db8da

For example, I found this one that's kinda-sorta similar to your guy... Anyways. Your guy has all kinds of problems. Extra muscles that don't exist among other issues. Use reference bro! Ain't nothing wrong with using reference. I'd love to be able to do everything from imagination but it's not like I'm going to accidentally stumble upon correct anatomy.

I'm not saying the 3d model is inaccurate I'm saying you probably traced it wrong, also the other arm also looks very short . Its traced as accurately as possible..tracing is something a literal three year old can do..the problem is that foreshortening 'sizes' are exaggerated in art. A perfectly traced contour outline with bad rendering and incorrect cross contour lines on the inside still make for a bad, inaccurate drawing. "Correctness" requires an agreement between various elements.

To believe your drawing is correct would be to say that words can be jumbled as long as they fit within the margins of a page.

Good to hear, besides with that much clothing, you can barely see any anatomy anyway, so just worry about the general form and proportion instead,
Outside the pose, the only noticeable problem is the rotation of the foot, while the foot can rotate slightly inward, her foot appears to be about 90 degrees different from her knee.

Your outline is way too saturated. When you're working with contrasting colors, one will be more saturated and the other will be desaturated. That's why the character looks almost brown with the green outline. Id suggest desaturating that outline on yours. Also that tutorial was for putting a character on a white background, but you opted for red on red, with the green outline. Not only that but the background is just as bright as the character along with being the same color, another no-no. Please don't rape my eyes next time thanks

I don't think that colors are your main issue.

You should practice rendering some primitives for starters. Spheres, cylinders, and cubes, etc. I don't really understand where your light is supposed to be coming from here. The neck is a cylinder. The snout consists of two boxes stacked on top of each other etc. Maybe get some clay and a lamp or a simple 3d software to do some experimentation?

About the colors: You should either have warm light/cold shadow or vice versa. Your color temperatures are completely inconsistent. The greens get more blue towards the shadow and the light parts get redder.

Get a nice picture of a green lizard and just examine it with your color picker. Look the pic attached to this post. The greens on this lizard's skin are going more towards the reds when they're in the shadow. They go towards more earthy tones where as the parts in the light are a more saturated green (might be some bounce from the environment but still)

I think you'd benefit more from examining some good photography than other artists. Information like that comes filtered and you won't really know what's their interpretation and what's "correct".

Hope this helps. Probably not, but I tried...

Sometimes things just need to cook longer, and there's no real good way to say it. Maybe it's the organic buildup of brushstrokes and colors that create a noise that breaks up the coldness of flat hue swatches. You should either have warm light/cold shadow or vice versa
I had cool shadows on the light parts as well (greenish since they were moving from yellow to blue), but it looked like vomit so I painted over them with warmer shadows and neglected to do the same everywhere else. I'm not sure if that particular color range is tricky to work with but I'll keep your advice in mind from now on
I look at other artists because I try to see what works and looks good rather than what's correct, though I'll make an effort to look at photographs. It's kind of hard for me to do though, since color and lighting changes are a lot more subtle in photographs to the point where I have trouble telling whether something's in shadow or the local color is just slightly different there (particularly in a setting like your pic where the main light source is all around the subject)

I don't do any animation, unfortunately. Honestly, I don't think you'll enjoy Procreate if you're into CSP. I've been meaning to get into CSP myself. It seems really awesome for line art. I'm a big fan of Dave Rapoza's more recent line-based work (pic related) and his art has definitely leveled up after he moved to CSP from PS and Procreate (Yeah, I know it's not just because of the software)...

Thanks for your insights /,,/.

Decent sense of form, fewer brush strokes would be better to avoid muddiness

Continuing my fishboi character concept. I tried to force myself to do some line art and flat colors. Gonna shade him a bit and liven up the flats with more variation next.

Feedback/Redline/Overpaints welcome, as always...

Tomorrow will probably ink (black) just to define the shapes and give a more polished look, almost done with coloring, finally

This is very nice but I have two critiques. The way he’s holding the spear on his right hand was very lazily drawn. Show him holding and gripping it, don’t just have a few fingers holding it. Also his left ear is quite long so I think that his right one would show just a littleeee bit from the perspective shown.

>> No.4318995

>>4318894
Ignore what I said about the ear, I don’t think it would show after looking a bit longer. Just fix the way he’s holding that spear.

I don't think he's holding the spear, it seems it's strapped in the back, you can see the rope on his chest

Thanks for the crits bro. He's not really holding the spear. it's attached to his back with the leather/rope strap thingy, so his right arm is in a resting pose. I understand the confusion though and I'll probably need to address that. I think shading might make it clearer or I'll just rotate the spear a bit so It's clearer that it's in his hand.
