Colour mixing is simple,m are you talking about applying schemes? I don't think this was such a commonly written about thing with trad painters, so the history of it isn't there. Most of what I come across seems to be the digital stuff, for animation.

It's a fucking colour theory book. He's good at explaining colour theory and colour relationships in a concise and codified way. You don't need to like his paintings to learn from the book, I literally never even looked at his personal work beyond what he demonstrates in the book.

It's not a realist painting book, which is great. It's useful to learn the fundamentals of colour theory in isolation and simplified application. understanding the absolute basics of colour theory that you will find on this book will make things like James Gurney's colour and light SO much easier to apply in your work since you actually understand the fundamental workings of the colours.

He actually does use colour well in his painting, you're just not impressed by his modernist style and you can't recognise good use of colour outside of impressive realistic rendering and lighting. (I don't like his paintings either, due to personal taste, but I can at least see how he's applying colour theory in them)

I really feel sorry for you if you disregard this book based on the fact that you don't like his painting, it's a couple of hours to read through it and will dramatically improve your understanding of colour. It's your loss if you don't read it.

Also this is somethign you will eventually come to learn so let me save you some time: the best teachers tend to be mediocre at their craft but incredibly knowledgeable and adept at using words and explaining things. Some of the absolute best artists are shitty teachers. Study from your favourite artists, don't necessarily listen to the shit they say. Listen to great teachers but don't necessarily study from their art.

color theory is the cryptonite of this board OP and you know it. i doubt more than 10% of /ic/ has ever actually tried to read these 2 goddamn books. everyone just keeps recommending them because this is the only thing they ever heard about. i'd really like to see anyone here try to actually use any technique or idea from gurney's book.
and that one cgma video course about colour is just horrible.

my only honest recommendations are this set of exercises https://creativecolor.wordpress.com/color-exercises/ and johannes itten's book, though its highly theoretical i think it has a lot of good advice for artist with high level of reading comprehension. i enjoyed it a lot but i had to take notes and look for additional reading material to fully understand it. still, its not a painting manual. i wish i knew anything better, ive been searching for a long time but to no avail.

i think OP means a book about how light affects local colours, how to pick colors for shadows, how to apply color theory to painting etc. theres a lot of books that tell you what complementary colors are or "light is warm so shadows are cool" but there is a serious lack of a book that will actually tell you how to pick the goddamn colors.

i havent read alla prima but i have gone through majority of gurney's book and its not a manual, its a "catalogue" of "popular" light situations, i think thats what i'd call it. he tells you for example:

im convinced most successful artist just observe others' art and try to implement their "tricks". this is the only thing that ever worked for me anyway, i just see cool art, try to analyze whats happening in the colors and then i try to do the same in my paintings, because theres really no fucking manual afaik.

well im retarded when it comes to focusing my attention on something for longer than 3 seconds so thats why i have to take such notes.
i always use the same approach to taking notes in books and its translating whatever sentence i found to be important/interesting to "simple" language. so for example there was this sentence in that itten's book:

and my brainlet note reads:

The first page on direct sunlight (pg.28, pic related) tells you how the blue sky changes color depending on the weather and how the blue affects the local color of the object in shadow.

>In the figure at right, the blue sky color gives the top of the shoulder a greenish quality in the shadow. Where the sleeve drops from the shoulder, the yellow shirt picks up warm colors from the ground, and appears moire orange.
This is telling you that the shadows are the sky color + local color mixed together.

The shadows are the secondary light color + local color mixed together. For planes facing up, the secondary light is the sky. For planes facing down, the light is bounced off the ground which is warm in this case. look at the page on reflected light for more.
