What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

I've been curious about 5 point perspective and looked at a couple tutorials. I free handed this and was wanted to ask some questions. The objects have to bend in the shape of the arcs formed by the interacting perspective lines and things get wider and more normal looking in the middle while things on the side get thinner right?
Are there any other rules that apply to these interactions that I'm not aware of?

I may use her in a sequel to an old webcomic.

It's looking quite nice, but I can see why you'd be a bit frustrated with it. Wouldn't want the piece to be cluttered, but perhaps play around a bit more with that space between the trees and the bushes.

Cute piece. The values are fine in so far that I can tell what's going on even befor clicking the tumbnail, but the biggest contrast is between the bushes in the front and the floor which draws my eyes away from the characters faces.
Generally, this background doesn't quite work for me. The idea of the symetrical trees is cool, but I'd say you either need to stylize them to be more abstract, or add some slight variations to make them appear more natural - right now they're in a bit of an uncanny in-between stage.
I also think the piece needs some yellow tones in the foliage. Not much, since I'm guessing this is an overcast day, but since you have some yellow tones in your color palette (blond hair, skintones), it looks a odd to have none in the leaves when there should be some fresh young growth somewhere. Alternatively, you could go with a more stylized color palette of only green and magenta and the neutrals you can mix from those two, but then you'd have to go with a silverish blond for the hair instead. I guess what I'm saying is that the characters color palette and the enviroment don't quite go together.

Regarding the base of the neck, less detail is more, you drew it like hard edges when itcs a very smooth area on a person. While on the topic of the neck, where her shoulders curve up to her neck is a lot slimmer than her neck at the top, this could have been solved by sketching all of the anatomy first before touching her hair at all. Her nose isn't bad, but it's pointed to the viewer when it should be slightly to the right looking at the rotation of her chin, which, she has quite a large jaw, and your mouth is not properly centered with her chin making it look even bigger. Aside from mostly her misshapen face, pencil smudging, and your liberal use of hard lines it actually doesn't look bad, your hatching is decent enough. Just remember, less is more with hard lines, linework is not detailwork, details should be much thinner than your linework to not muddy the focus. Work on your anatomy and not making the entire image linework, less is more. I'd say flip the image horizontally on your phone or comouter and you'll see your issues a lot better, and get into the habit of doing so often to help you self critique and grow as an artist. I believe in you, anon.

Nessie, your characters are amazing but it always puts me off how you completely neglect the background. This could be a really awesome piece if only you gave a more interesting treatment to the environment. I realize it's unfinished, but... path in the middle + bushes and trees on the side... I think you can come up with something more original than this.

I'd really like to see some pure landscape art from you. I think a few studies of environments could help you develop as an artist. Just some friendly advice, otherwise you're doing great.

I'm gonna try doing more environment studies, and especially inorganic stuff this year so I can get outside of my comfort zone. You would benefit greatly by studying comic book inking. If you are going to ink lines, you have to commit to the whole piece heing rendered with ink. The harsh black lines do nothing but outline soft contours. Parts where this stuck out was the collarbones and lips. A line represents a dramatic contour shift. It is a shadow cast upon a surface with a sharp slope. It can be used to separate a character from a background for example but not a half inch, round, contour like the collarbone.

Eliminating many harsh black lines around the neck and mouth/nose will be much more appealing imo.

your rendering and line work are great, but you really need to work on anatomy, proportions, perspective and construction. the kings head in particular has major issues with feature placement. his eyes are too low, brow/forehead is much too large. his ear is much too far forward, it looks as if it is attached to the front plane of his face, when it should be on the side. the top of his head under the crown is flat, and it looks as if his head is a bit too “deep”. I think you should work on doing construction under your drawings with pencil. you can plan out these things much easier this way.

I hope you don't mind but I did a paint over your Asuka, as I see you a lot here but wanted to just give you a heads up on some things. It's not very perfect, and I wanted to try and keep your style, but I hope it helps you out.

1) You made her nose a little too flat, and her nostril way too low. Noses will point out so you can see a definite shape, and nostrils are higher than the tip of the nose that connects to the philtrum (cupid's bow). The top of the nose will also follow the shape of the face to connect to the eyebrow.

2) Her eyes were a bit too huge, so I made them a bit smaller, but wanted to keep your stylized eyelashes. Female eyes are more so rounder than males and not so sullen looking and pointed.

3) Her chin was too low and too out, female faces are a lot more smoother and have more curves, and chins are not as big as mens can be.

4) Her ear is a bit too big and same as the chin - needed to be smoother, lots of female ears are quite rounded. You got the position of the ear right though!

I like the colours you use for her though, but are you gonna draw proper bitchy Asuka instead of Sadsuka's? :(

I do know, that's why despite me saying that I'm putting effort into improving them the end result still turned out fundamentally broken. But it's a matter of experience, if I keep studying and practicing eventually I'll have something I'm proud of.

I'm extremely grateful for the detailed response, anon, thank you! How the heck does one draw like this? For context, the only kind of rendering I know how to do is cel-shading. When I saw this picture, I tried to recreate the rendering using the airbrush tool and a soft eraser, and it ended horribly. If anybody knows where I can learn to render like this, please let me know. Where do I start, how do I progress, etc.
