IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

I'm trying to learn Loomis, but I'm a little confused about the part where he says that the hairline is about halfway up from the brow to the top of the head(giving you one of the 1/3s you need). However the hairline seems to be way further up and I always end up with really short faces.
Can someone explain, I'm really dumb.

Glad to hear that anon
Here are some important pointers
>Take your time
Do not rush with your pen and go halfway on analyzing volume, the course is slow but very valuable. And do not go into volume until you're really confident on the initial line drawing
>Do not think about material or texture
You'll be copying a continuous surface that might be closer or farther away, that turns, goes around and so on. Focus on volume and light.
>Separate your shadows and be consistent with your values
So since this is done in the academical tradition, you need to understand that even yur darkes midtones MUST be lighter than the lightest shadow.
A good way to make sure you're consistent with the shadow is to pick two values which are darker than the rest, fill in the shadows first and then work the light volumes.

It's not halfway in absolute terms (as in if you would measure the drawing), the ball is curved, so it is distorted in the upper quarter if you look at it straight on. Depending on how you look at the ball, it appears to be more than halfway or less than halfway, always have the perspective in mind.

Hey, /beg/, I'm starting to workout and hit the /fit/ sticky. I've read that when you draw, you unconsciously draw yourself. Maybe a bit of the reason I don't draw models so well, is that I don't reflect them enough, so I'm hitting the gym three times every four days. I'm watching my macros and cutting while maintaining enough protein. This along side a daily routine of 20 gesture drawings a day and a photo study, with alternating days of rendering practice and perspective practice.
I've just started, but in three months I'll post results.

Also use more lines to line up facial features such as the eye and try to give that nose more depth because it doesn’t seem like it’d be that flat, especially in the perspective shown. Also train yourself to recognize shapes and forms in the human face to make your features way more realistic. those are something you'll be able to do with time. there's no amount of understanding that can change your motor control. it's all about mileage. don't get stuck doing that until it's perfect though. Use it as a warm up before drawing or whenever you have couple of minutes free. make sure you have paper or pencil/pen to scribble shit.

understand that you need to work on your motor control and that you need to practice then move on to the next lesson. once you get to the drawing lesson if you feel like your hand not moving as you would like it to then practice those basic shapes.

learning art is hard for a complete beginner. I've been where you are and I nearly quit a couple of times because I don't have a proper mentor other than various resources and people telling me "need more loomis" or "go to /beg/" in this shit hole. persevere and you will get there.

I'm going to reiterate what was said before, that the process takes time and consistent practice. Beyond that, remember that the improvement won't be visible day to day. It may not even be noticeable month to month, particularly if you aren't pursuing art full time or as a subject in school. Don't be that guy posting "it's been a whole month why am I still bad" as if that's not normal and everyone is just holding out the secret technique on you. It personally took me years to reach a point where my faces and figures weren't abominations, and I still have a long way to go.

If I had to recommend just one thing to help with that part of the process, it would be: use a spiral bound sketchbook and draw on every page. Keep each drawing and practice, don't scribble out bad work, or make too much silly commentary around it in text, or tear out the pages. Work first page to last page practicing exercises, anatomy, construction, landscapes, whatever. Then get another, and do the same thing. Keep every one of these and look back over your journey to see how far you've come. Because otherwise the progress is so gradual you'll never truly realize how much better you are.
Personally I like to only use one side of each page on the sketchbook, and then much later come back and use the other sides so I have my new work facing stuff from before. It forced me to look at my first horrible Loomis blooks and ogre-like female portraits. Or you could put the date you started the sketchbook on the first page, and the date you finished it on the last to have a more accurate record. I don't know, my point is it will take a while but stick with it and keeping old work around helps remind you of the elusive feeling of progress.

Don't apply too much pressure to push down on the stylus, adjust your pressure curves if you have to.

But it's not just that, I think the face itself was also better on the sketch. It's so hard to make it perfect, I spent like 3 hours doing the sketch face but then I can't 100% replicate it for the lineart

>> No.4301467

>>4301457
That is because sketches are ambiguous and that your mind fills in the missing pieces or idealized the pieces to make it whole.

Once you start to clean up to make it less ambiguous, you lose the ability to idealize the sketch.

You are left with harsh truth that it was bad to begin with and that all the sketchy lines you drew was to hide the fact you didn't know which was the good line to draw and just flailed around aimlessly until you got close to your mark.

And even then you still couldn't chose the right line in your clean up.

Construction aside, you need to train your observational drawing more. The fact that the heads all facing in different directions than the reference indicates to me that you had an "idea" of the pose and drew from that idea in your head rather than fully utilizing the reference.

After placing a major mass, like the head, use that as a point of reference to map out where key points would be. Like trench coat man, using the head as a point of reference, I know the top of the head lines up with the base of his fingers. Using the hand behind his head, if I drop a line straight down, I know where his big toe will touch the floor.

With the running woman, the green shows how you can use negative space to check.

This is not to make you a xerox machine but to help you self assess yourself.

Thank you very much. I’m the case of the running woman, I was trying to exaggerate her pose, which is why I put her arm closer to the chest. The two you have highlighted were the first two I did, but I completely agree with your points. Thank you again.

Grinding is a myth. Your technical skills will improve naturally but all the time spend "learning to draw straight lines" is time that you could have spent learning to draw straight lines while, at the same time, learning how to construct complex 3D objects on a flat plane with perspective, or learning proportions.

If you don't finish your practice with a concrete problem in your work that you can point to which you have identified (and, ideally, solved) then your practice was worthless because you're just going to do the same shit next time without knowing why it looks like shit.

Currently reading through loomis, How necessary is his exercise on proportion? seems needlessly tedious, seems to me just keeping in mind what the proportions should roughly be while sketching should suffice. As long as you're actually checking them, and recognizing where you went wrong.

Drop Loomis.

Loomis is for absolute fucking beginners who have no idea that construction is even a thing. Once you know that construction exists, you've learned everything that Loomis has to teach you. Draw from life using construction, don't draw from imagination.

And construct the shapes using planes.

Although this isn't a totally useless reference for proportions either.

>Draw from life using construction, don't draw from imagination.
By which I mean you'd be better served applying construction techniques to reference images, rather than trying to construct something from nothing, if you want to git gud - at least for a little while.

Not literally don't ever draw from imagination.

What do you mean when you say construct the shapes using planes? Currently I'm doing construction using basic 3d shapes.

If you're drawing animals you need to add planes which reflect the underlying bone structure. A human head isn't a sphere. It's a very irregular shaped object. The planes add the detail required to actually make it look like a head.

Construction begins with drawing basic 3D shapes but you need to divide them into complex 3D shapes using planes.

>Does this work better than starting with the head?
Dont know yet But will try today will update you on how its going.

>I'm currently extremely frustrated drawing the head. I keep drawing and trying to learn new ways to draw the head and I've done a ton of Loomis heads and while I'm improving, it's only just barely. It's getting pretty frustrating and I'm not entirely sure what to do.

Same but this video helped me out a little when constructing the head. https://youtu.be/0jHhb1W5Wnw?list=LLDVhIycCSSlfVUWPx1vXo-w&t=218

>I'm thinking of giving up semi-realism and just draw anime heads since it seems easier. What do you think?

I dont know about the anime heads since I never drew any but feel free to experiment and post on /beg/ for critiques that will help you improve.
Im not the best one for helping and giving advice to art but since you asked I will try to help to the best of my ability fren.

Also in pic related do you anything about drawing hands been having trouble recently.

Same been having trouble with heads for awhile but this video helped me out when constructing the head https://youtu.be/0jHhb1W5Wnw?list=LLDVhIycCSSlfVUWPx1vXo-w Go to 3:37 to what helped me.

I dont know about the anime heads since I never drew any not know how they look. But keep experimenting and posting on /beg/ and potentially get good advice from a anon that is better then me should you choose one path or the other

Im not the best person to be giving advice or helping people in drawing but since you asked I will try my best fren.

Also in pic related been having trouble drawing hands (look in the middle) have anything for that?

Here's a little red pill for all of you.
Symbol drawing isn't bad, you just have to replace your childish symbols for more mature and accurate symbols.
Pros still symbol draw, they just have better symbols.

Not great quality image, but this is an old drawing and I wanted to know what is wrong with this, besides the gesture because it was my first disappointment as a teenager.

So, I'm workin on a sketch and figure if I wanna improve, I might as well post my most basics of basics. Does the skeleton have to be really well done, or just so I know what the body is generally going to look like?

This stuff is terrible. Try creative paperclay or ladoll. They have better tooth (surface texture) and dry at lot more even rate to a rock-hard finish. Less shrinkage too, after they dissolve all the water in the drying process.
Technically you do all the things you wanted with the clay you have and the ones I mentioned, however, you still need a surface primer for the finished scuplture if youre making a mold from it.
