this book is great as a reference but it's actually not structured very well as a course, https://mega.nz/#F!8qA2FLDQ!9ADn1WRz-YcH7H9M3i11dg this is the hampton analytical figure drawing course from the video thread that has 8 weeks of videos that are a better introduction. Would recommend for beginners and then use loomis once you want to apply perspective.

Is it worth it to grind through these books quickly or do I need to space it out? I don't draw, but I've always wanted to learn. I own the figure drawing book and fun with a pencil but I never took the time to go through them. I have the next 8 days off work so I could go through these for as long as I can stand it. How long did it take you all to finish either book?

You're trying too hard to copy the exact simplified forms that Loomis uses. That's not really the point, focus on slowing down and getting the propotions and placements of your marks on the page accurately.

brute memorization isn't everything, but it's still very important.

dave rapoza would draw the same muscle 18 times then do it that many times from imagination again to memorize. other people on CA did the same thing, grind from ref - > grind from memory - > repeat until solidified into muscle memory at which point you can change it to fit your style

Copying it is fine, you are basically just taking notes for yourself to remember the info.
But the way I did it is to go through the steps of
1. copy exact drawings in book on 1 topic (e.g. mannequin)
2. Redraw the mannequin from memory in the same poses as the book.
3. Now that I know how to construct the mannequin, I use photo ref of models and draw the mannequin in their pose.
4. After doing this a ton, I try to invent poses using the mannequin.

In the book Loomis says one should do balance studies in order to get a feel for the center of gravity. I'm dumb what does he exactly mean / what am I supposed to do? Just draw figures n see if they are balanced?. Any responses are appreciated

just make sure the figure isnt tipping over. imitating a pose in front of a mirror will help i think.
also slooooow down. your drawings look messy. but of course if your tendency is to draw loosely just use a light pencil then refine it with a darker pencil. that way u understand what ur doing. think of these as your notes.

I've been doing loomis heads for about 6 fucking months and I must be a fucking smoothbrain because my work is still fucking awful. I dont understand the planes of the face because he doesn't do step by step, he just fucking throws an image at you and is like 'here study this'.

I get that copying can help but what is the point of copying if you don't know what you are supposed to be copying! Six fucking months of this and I still can't draw a head.

Why limit yourself to Loomis when there are so many artists since to go in depth with regard to construction. Branch out a little as there are alternative instructors teaching the same things in different ways that may or may not click into place a bit better than 1 man's perspective.
