That's not the original paper pulp, I think it's from the material they used for the book's paper. It feels smooth for the most part but also kinda cheap. Not sure how to describe it since getting a feel for types of paper is something scanners get an experience for. I'm sure the original art is much cleaner. Look at the collophone (last couple pages that I didn't level), you'll see the same.

Art instruction is rough at that young an age. I'd say something like Dodson Keys to Drawing, Pen and Ink Drawing by Alphonso Dunn, How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way. The Marvel book touches on all the drawing basics, just make sure to show them that it's not just for drawing capeshit.

If they're really into art I think some of the older books are excellent for showing things they might not be exposed to in a modern setting, and give them plenty of pages to thumb through. Robert Beverley Hale Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters, Guptill Rendering in Pen and Ink, or (starting to be a stretch unless they're really precocious) Bridgman Constructive Anatomy.

What you should do is go balls deep and buy a replica skull like I did. It's much, much better than any picture and you'll gain a deeper understanding of the skull, since it has some forms that are hard to understand through just images alone. They'll run you anywhere from 20 to 60 bucks.

I doubt it. I have a couple on my shelf that I have yet to find in any trove.

To confuse things even further, the series has been renumbered (or books that previously did not have a number were assigned one) at least once. "Super Basics", for example, is inexplicably volume 8. I would think it should be closer to 1, 2, or 3.

look for the scott robertson stuff, how to draw first and then how to render. you'll be focused much more on construction, good perpsective, and shape design. at the same time get a copy of sketching drawing techniques for product designers by eissen and steur. it looks like they have a basics book that is good too, more like a mix of how to draw and how to render.
