I know I'm still doing boring compositions and poses. I've heard the criticisms, and I continue to think about them daily. But I don't think I'm good enough at painting characters or backgrounds to try for more dynamic comps just yet. But rest assured, I'm working my way towards it bit by bit.

As for this piece, I'm mostly looking for light and color critiques. Maybe if there're any perspective issues I missed.

Your perception and knowledge of painting is skewed. You need to take a step back and actually see what youre trying to go for here. Your edge control is bad, possibly because u only use one or two brushes. And you dont know how to utilize your layers to control edges better. Painting in one layer is a meme. In most cases its using layers than merging at certain points. Using those layers to control lighting. So relax and that stupid brush and pick up a soft brush for actual transitions and use a round brush. Use that ugly sponge texture sparingly i dont give a fuck if you think you can render with it. Thats not the point here. You are no where near good enough or confident enough to finish something with it.

If you'd like to post an example of something that demonstrates and adheres to your principles, and make an argument for why switching to the hard round would be an objective improvement, I'm all ears. I wish you would. But I'm not convinced yet, because I'm under the impression that you think brushes augment or bottleneck raw painting ability. And they don't. They're strictly for aesthetic.

So yeah. Direct me to an artist that makes solid work with primarily a hard round. Nothing personal, but I'm not going to just take your word for it. I still don't think the hard round and soft round can accomplish anything that simply glazing with a texture brush on low flow and opacity can't. Hope you understand where I'm coming from.

hey anon i like your work a lot. always happy to see it on insta. i kinda agree with that other commenter about the "sponge" brush (is it the chalky brush from ps?), i mean, dont ditch it completely if you like it, maybe just use it more sparingly? you know if you make too many brush strokes that look similar it kinda becomes to look like a weird pattern, you want it to look organic. thats why painting teachers are always so anal about changing your brushes and angle of your strokes every few minutes. also i think you could've benefited from creating a cleaner hard edge in that rim light, it looks scribbly/hairy rn. keep drawing & posting !

Well it wasn't really about the gesture, it was moreso about the design.

I'm doing all this simple, boring stuff because I'm still not doing it at the level I want to be doing it at. I can't even get consistent lighting on a guy standing in a neutral pose, let alone some dynamic pose with lots of shit going on. It's like I'm trying to learn to walk before I practice running.

Also backgrounds. I suck at backgrounds. There's a lot of simple stuff that I'm bad at doing, so I'm trying to fix that stuff bit by bit.

ye for sure, not as static and symmetric. Symmetry and static poses are fine and all but they are very boring unless you paint them extremely fucking well or if they are symmetric to serve the composition/story telling of a piece like pic related for instance.

If it's values, I'd use a more opaque brush, that's the only way to learn to think ahead.

I'd imagine the sword doesn't weigh very much considering she's holding it with one hand. It's manageable and not unwieldy. Does it look a bit light in her hand despite how frail she looks? Perhaps she's not quite human.

>Is he out of breath? What is his reaction to victory? Solemn? Triumphant?
Based on what I know about the character, I'd imagine she's not feeling much of anything. Just business as usual for another friendly neighborhood monster slayer.

I don't mean to be a dick here, but I really don't care about relating to the viewer with mundane themes like "Oh man, I just killed this monster. I'm so worn out, jeez. Look how relatable I am to you", or "Man, this big sword is so heavy, it really takes a toll on me to use it for so long". I don't care about answering those questions. They're extremely basic and uninteresting, to me personally.

All I care about is pushing the envelope on shape design and painting sexy lighting on top of a solid drawing. I like compositions that focus on shape rather than narrative. I've said this a million times, but there's no single painting that conveys a narrative better than a comic with context could. I'm not a fucking story-teller. I'm a painter.

Despite the snarky reply, I do genuinely appreciate you taking the time to share your input, please don't think otherwise.

I'm guessing you've never heard of Sargent then. Or perhaps all those beautiful brush strokes and the masterful technique was completely lost on you because it wasn't telling a story or answering all your silly checklist of vapid narrative inquiries?

Pic related is no doubt my greatest masterpiece of this lifetime, and I dedicate it solely to you. Look at me, I'm an illustrator now.

Also you are not at the level where you can look down on anything and not look like a whiny ass bitch. >If you want to focus on technique
No, it's fine, I'll just forego all my technical goals and aspirations and just do narrative rough sketches to placate you. It's all good, I've already got it all figured out.

>Also, you are not at the level where you can look down on anything and not look like a whiny ass bitch.
Debatable, really. What's also debatable is if you're even skilled enough to be talking down to me in matters of skill in painting. Sounds like baseless posturing to me.

>Sargent paintings have emotions
Invoking emotion is not an exact science. Everyone gets what they personally get out of art. It's not practical to attempt to engineer a painting to invoke emotions. Doing so results in a very shallow result that appeals to the lowest common denominator.

>There's story behind the people he painted
Really? Did his paintings tell you that? No, they didn't. You read about this in a book after the fact and then it changed the way you looked at his work because it gave you context. Context the paintings themselves don't give you unless you were told. Sargent was not an illustrator, he was a fine artist.

I can never get a clean sketch for the life of me, and it gets bad to the point I lose myself in all the lines, not to mention all the time I waste trying to erase the old lines from the new ones. Pic related is a pretty good example of what ends up happening, where I get lines that look really scratchy because they're basically tens of lines crossed over one another, and kinda erased into shape. It's a big mess, and it has been a big problem for me.

I wanted to ask what's the better way, from a /beg/ standpoint, of going about sketching. Is it just a matter of sketching in "steps", where you basically do blocking first, then erase, then do a more detailed pass, and so on? Isn't this too much work for busy scenes? What about people who do it on paper? Is it just a matter of getting everything sort of correct on my first try (not going to happen any time soon, hah)? And on top of that, how do pros do it?

Honestly, I just see everyone sketching and just putting everything in the right place first time, and I feel like a fucking neanderthal, because I need to draw a form like 5 times before I get what I want from my head. It feels like one of those things that should be as natural as breathing, and yet I just simply can't.

>> No.4287778

Draw in pen, or draw in pencil with no eraser. Do not use digital for sketching.
'Sketching', insofar as it has any definition, is where an artist draws something without paying too much mind as to how polished it is. An eraser is the antithesis to a sketch.
Do not erase, work in pen. Will mistakes be made? Yes. But if you don’t erase, you will make mistakes quickly and learn faster than if you make a mistake, erase it and make it the exact same way again.

>> No.4287788

If you want a clean sketch on digital, sketch it first and then lower the opacity, open a new layer and only do clean lines, if you miss a line you ctrlZ.

I've seen some japanese artists have 2-3 layers of correction before doing the final lineart layer.

>Draw in pen, or draw in pencil with no eraser.
I did that a lot when starting out. If you're curious, I started with keys to drawing, did all the exercises in that (I didn't draw one of the 3 trees, and I still feel bad about that...), and got great results very fast, but that kind of observational drawing is very different from imagination drawing, and if I did that, I'd always end up with a mess of lines I couldn't manage, so I doubt that's the answer here. I'm not saying it's not a good idea, I'm just saying I'm garbo, and would never get anything done.

>'Sketching', insofar as it has any definition, is where an artist draws something without paying too much mind as to how polished it is.
Ok, then that's not what I meant. What would you call something that's supposed to be eventually turned into a final, finished, piece, then? That's what I'm looking for.

>>4287788
Ok, thanks, I'm going to try this, wish me patience, anon. I know loomis (at least in keys to drawing), uses this style of "draw, then erase till light, and then draw again", which is basically what you're refering to, so maybe I'll check the book out again.

>> No.4287826

>>4287814
Finished pieces are a meme. The idea of a finished piece assumes you can take a sketch, which you do a lot of, and then draw over it or paint it, which you do less of presumably because you finish fewer pieces than you sketch.
But how can one be equally as good at finishing or painting as one is at sketching, if one sketches, say, ten times as much as one paints? You’re complaining that you’re worse at something you do less of.
If you want to make nice line work, practice nice line work, don’t practice trying to bring a drawing from concept to utter completion. Similarly, if you want to make nice paintings that come from sketches, you would have to paint as much as you sketch, often painting for painting's sake.

I think I see what you're saying, but just to make sure: you're basically saying that, if I want to make something with pretty lines, I should already be proficient enough at drawing (and already know what I'll be drawing well enough), to put it down without needing that much reiterating, and I should also be proficient enough at lines to then line it properly, is that it? So basically I should focus on getting it right the first time, like I mentioned above, and if I can't get it right, I need to practice more the individual parts I didn't get right?

>> No.4287906

Yes. Art is the sum of its parts, plus soul. You only get better at what you practice so you shouldn’t be surprised that you fail at what you don’t practice.
And also, art is just the hours. There are logical, even scientific ways to accelerate the process but it will still take time. You must bravely confront your problems, accept failure, and drill every day.

I really love this! You managed to put the detail in the right places. The only problem I have with this is the whole outlining thing that you're doing. I don't think you need to outline the whole silhouette with a homogenous outline. You even went more subtle with it on his head which kind of fucks with the focus of the image. You probably know this but I'd say the hierarchy with line thickness is something like:

1. Things that are close
2. Things that are heavy
3. Things that are of importance
4. Things that are in front of something (lines intersecting lines behind)
5. etc.

The rules don't have to be what I wrote but you need some cohesion in your stuff. Anyways: 9/10. Really nice!

Look for ways to render the yellow jacket better, it looks like shit. Also maybe render the shorts better too. Shade the arms better. Other than that, add some highlights to the skin.

All in all, it's not that bad, you're on the right path, but seriously if you learn to render clothes better it will look much, much better.

For the jacket, find real life reference and try to render it before applying to your picture.

Don't know if I would be much help but, but I'm on csp, and for painting the background color, I made a hard round brush with the brush tip being some weird blob mess that fades a bit on the edges. The brush that creates texture, I got from cs assets, called "Quinn set" and it's the smooth noise painting (round) brush, though I just added a paper texture to it, to achieve a more dignified look to it.

I posted this on /beg/ but got no replys
I just gotta get some critique on the colors(and everything else, honestly) and some help on working with PS, been using SAI for a long while and i've been feeling kinda stuck.
The blending on SAI is, to me, the best possible, and the way i change brush sizes too, i just hit the shortcut, move the pen a bit and set the size. Is there a way to get that same thing with PS?

Using the soft/hard round brushes and applying the Pen Pressure button for the brush works wonders.

The pencil in a circle icons after Opacity and Smoothing are the ones you want on, like on this, which will help you get the pressure you want, which is nice for blending.

"B" is the brush tool keybind in PS, however pressing this over and over goes through 3/4 different kinds of brush, but your main one is just the Brush tool (little paintbrush icon). You can also change the style of your brush (I'll reply to this message with a screenshot of it + explain).

The "[" and "]" keys are used to change the size of the brush, "[" making the brush smaller and "]" larger.

"E" is for the eraser/rubber tool, simple enough. "I" is the colour picker or eyedropper tool. These are simple keybinds but if you wanna change them or just get rid of a shitload you can (plus you can save your keybinds too).

Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts will be your go to for changing them, or Alt+Shift+Ctrl+K but fuck that.

As for critique: I like how soft the colours you're using are, and I like how you've implemented hints of yellowish green into the foliage of your cutout.
The reflection on the window make it look like it's a nice and soft early morning (are you using a ref? Only because with windows you can see the inside of buildings slightly and they will reflect too).
The strokes you're using are giving it some good shape too, don't be afraid to build them up though to make them look solid.

And then for your brush settings and changing their texture/shape, either go to the bar at the top, click the downward arrow next to the current brush selected and the window opens.

Alternately, right clicking with the mouse or using one of your tablet pen buttons when on your open canvas opens the window too.

But just explore PS at your own pace, and just have a look at what's to offer. I used to be SAI and moved to PS a few years ago, and imo I prefer PS.

So far it just looks flat. And the green kinda blends in to the octopus for the glass.
The glass looks more polygonal with your coloring.

It took less than 10 minutes, and probably closer to 5. It's not because I'm fast, it's because I used the proper tool for the job, which reduces the number of marks one needs to make.

It's obvious you used a small brush with low opacity, and tried to paint shadows by following the contour of your drawing, working slowly inward. What you should have done instead is use a large brush with high opacity, and paint light in the same direction of the light source, and paint shadows in the opposite direction.

Think shapes and edge control, not endless blending.

When you're doing an underdrawing for a referenced painting, the most important thing is not line detail, values, or edge quality. It's angles. Don't even bother trying to get the outline to look fur-like, that just introduces problems and ambiguity.

You need to make sure your photo is taped onto your canvas, or resting on the same surface as your canvas, and they need to be as close to perpendicular to your sight as possible. Otherwise your perception of angles will be off.

Doing background art for my game, how is this? Is it clear as to what shit is? I tried to go for a jumble of mechanical shit but worry that it becomes a scribbly mess.

Then I scrapped the idea of a point and click because I really wanted combat.
So now it is a sort of resident evil/classic survival horror - adventure game hybrid.
It's played from classic adventure game perspective - kinda side on etc, but controls like a 2d resident evil, with similar saving/inventory/map mechanics.
Although it has dialogue from a point and click game.

I like your take on that character, you have a nice style. The only critique I have is that the eyes look odd. Might be because they don't have too much definition, which "anime" eyes usually have, and so instead they look more like oddly shaped "realistic" eyes.
Not sure if that conveys the issue well - I don't know the lingo since I barely hang out here!

Bruh what u even do in your free time, i think learning new things makes you grow as person also its quite challenging, for example korean, its very hard to pronounce and you practice a lot to understand what they are saying since its quite confusing, basically word seems the same but they pronounce it slightly different and whole meaning changes, you need to tell that apart, the difference is so slim its crazy.
Its quite different from how they speak in Japan Russia or Poland but closer to china for sure.

What about you post your own art instead of trying to be a little bitch for no apparent reason at all !

That already looks a lot better and more natural, I would personally do it like in this image, though that might just be style preference on my part.
The only thing I really think you need to change is the eyebrows, move them more to the right, so that the far away eyebrow follows the line from the nasal ridge into the brow out to the outline.

>Sargent was criticized in his own time for his portraits
Sargent is now a renowned painter of history. And people love his work for his brushwork and overall mastery of the medium. That alone makes his work engaging.

>He also is perfectly capable of creating pieces with strong narrative
I never said he wasn't capable. I said that people love his work for reasons other than it being strongly narrative on occasion.

>You should reevaluate what your goals and priorities are
What are my goals and priorities then?

>And learn to take criticism better
I take criticism fine when people provide critiques on my fundamentals. I don't take it well when people are trying to tell me what to paint, or telling me I'm not allowed to use a certain brush just because they don't like it, or that I can't be inspired by an artist I like because reasons I can't even fathom.

I'm not diametrically opposed to narrative stuff by the way. I do narrative work on occasion(picrel), but I'm not interested in becoming the next Norman Rockwell and depicting everyday people in their everyday lives doing everyday things. That's not for me. Or at least I don't think it is, but I guess you know more about my goals and priorities than I do, so you tell me.

bruh trying to mix both is haaard.
I kinda want to go more like style i showed above but i would give up ability to make detailed lips and noses.
Well in exchange for sure its easier to make vibrant colors work on less realistic style.

I could make face simpler and practice how to make more vibrant coloring and details, its a good exercise idea i think, skip face details and focus more on clothes and hair.
(like in this pic for example it looks really vibrant and detailed i struggle to do both)

why mix both? rei draws tons of art going between extremely stylized (chibi) and realism (relatively).
Pick something close to the level of realism you want and study that instead.

>>4295122
you can always check values with a B+W/desaturate filter, a lot of them are close but local value (color) is good enough here to do the work for you. If you want depth then start grouping your foreground/midground/background into different distinct value ranges (i.e. foreground dark transitioning into light background)
