IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

I've already done 4 exercises from KTD but It doesn't feel like I'm going anywhere, I know learning art is all about mileage and patience but these books give me a headache when I read them plus pic related doesn't really clear it up for me.

This book probably teaches you about the fundamentals but it's late and I need to go to bed, I'll read it more thoroughly once I wake up.

women's jaws come forward from the ear, not straight down. but before we get into too much detail, the overall shape of your head is wrong because you got the perspective wrong. the camera is looking down at her. so the fact that your horizontal lines do not address that means everything else is gonna be wrong. we're not eye level with her. she's looking up at us.

if i was to take a cross section of her head, i would see an ellipse. do you see what i'm saying?

so start over. making a ball that is titled down so that the back of the head is higher than the front.

Draw a box is really good but shouldn't be the first thing you jump to.
You should probably start with observational drawing (Keys to Drawing / Right Side of the Brain) before jumping into construction but if you really wanna jump into construction, you have to AT LEAST read Perspective Made Easy before doing the drawabox lessons.
Drawabox doesn't really teach you anything about perspective, if anything, the author assumes you have a basic knowledge of it.

for now i think there are 2 major pieces of advice i can give you
1. edge control - there should be edges that are really hard and edges that are so soft they disappear. observe photos, look for cast shadow and reflected light to figure out which edges look hard or soft
2. color of the light source - if the light source is warm, the shadows will probably look cool. you're moving within darker and brighter shades of one color. you need to also change the hue. i posted 2 pictures/tutorial in the previous thread. >4284879 >4284882
picrel is another tip about colors - its a neat trick to maintain a color harmony and give your painting an interesting twist.

>>4285681
look at the author's portfolio and decide for yourself whether you want to follow his advice. if you decide to go with it, use drawabox only as an aid for your drawings; so for example if your drawing has shit perspective, do the perspective lessons, go back to your drawing and fix it. dont drop all of your work to push through the whole course for next 3 months, you will stagnate badly.

saw ur post on the other board (when u mentioned being used to cell shading) so im replying with what u asked there in mind. u need to practice textures and using other brushes. dont try to make everything look so clean. let yourself be messy and you'll clean your art up once it comes more naturally. stay away from the airbrush, brushes with a hard edges, blur tool, and the select tool for now. color pick your reference (paying attention to where the colors are on the wheel) and be messy. digital painting is nothing like traditional painting or cell shading. look for free brushes for ur drawing program of choice and just practice drawing random shit with them. remember that this is practice and that your still learning. you need to get out of your comfort zone, lean on references, and make mistakes.

You said to study anatomy but I don't know where I'm going to study anatomy from.

I went through Glenn Vilppu's head drawing course, Proko's Portrait Drawing Course, Robert Beverly Hale's Head Anatomy Video, Proko's Neck Anatomy Videos, I've drawn a couple hundred skulls and I still don't see what you mean when you say to study anatomy.

Is there a magic pill for learning anatomy, because I'm going to all the places I can and I'm sitting down and taking notes and copying along but for some reason people just say "study anatomy" when I already know the anatomy. The problem is putting that anatomy to the paper which I don't think can be done by pure knowledge of anatomy.

And I did construct this head using the Loomis method as I practiced about 1000 times or for 6 hours a day for 4-5 days.

I also don't see the chicken scratching part. I don't make super long 10 inch lines perfectly but I also don't have little 2 centimeter lines connecting together. I'm not entirely sure you know what chicken scratching is exactly because I can show you an example of chicken scratching and what I did here.

For the "neater" part. What if I just used tracing paper and a light box? Or if I just went digital and threw my stabilizer up to 100? Isn't that what everyone else does when they haven't drawn for a decade?

>> No.4286276

Understood, my mistake. Well looking at the original picture something about the perspective seems off and the chin isn’t correlating to the rest of the head or something. The neck placement also seems strange. I can’t quite put my finger on it but that’s my 2 cents

Sounds like you know anatomy but can’t apply it. Try hamptons book. You might also be struggling because you aren’t using reference enough or you aren’t using basic shapes to form your heads first. I’m wrong about the chicken scratching, my mistake. By neater I mean just be more cognizant of your lines before putting them on the paper. You have a ton of unnecessary details and you got super lazy at some points in the drawing by just scribbling by trying to detail. The eye for example, it has black in most of it but it’s white in the corners. Make it entirely black. Art is a long journey and anatomy is hard as I’m working on it alone but maybe you just need to change your approach or method. Good luck

Yea. I wasn’t saying that it can’t be improved. I just find it a bit annoying when people throw around the word “chicken-scratching” when it’s not really chicken-scratching.

I posted an example of what I think chicken-scratching is. I could be wrong but the left is what I used to do, the middle is what I do now, and the right is what I do after I’ve drawn something so much that it becomes like child play.

Ironically enough, I can draw pretty good cubes but I kind of rushed that last cube.

That reminds me. I have been just laying down my lines without really thinking.

I always start my heads with a circle, always. But I may benefit by dumbing down some of the features I draw into basic shapes before comitting as I realize that I almost destroyed the sideane with my eye.

The eye was kind of meant to be like that but I see what you mean. It does look a bit lazy now that I look at it.

Thanks for the advice. It is taking it a but longer than I’d hoped to just be able to draw the head but I think I’m improving little by little.

Sorry you’re getting ignored.

The biggest problem here would be the perspective. It doesn’t seem like you understand perspective very well, or if you do, you’re not applying it to the face.

Try to get Marshall Vandruff’s Perspective Video series and go through it while taking notes. Then read through D’Amelio’s perspective handbook.

After that, just grind boxes until you can draw them in your sleep.

If you decide to study the figure, there are tons of courses in the Video Course Thread about ‘Figure Drawing’ that will help you. You’ll notice that they’ll all stress Gesture on top of everything else even on top of Anatomy.

If you decide to go with drawing heads, try the Steve Huston HC course that is also in the Video Course thread. Picking up the Proko Anatomy course for the Anatomy of the Neck wouldn’t be too bad of an idea either.

I'm unsure if this is a direct trace or heavily referenced but the artist you're studying from has a very particular way he distorts facial proportions so he can sell his interpretation of a yandere face, and it really does not mesh with what you did in the second panel. The left side of her face looks too large because in the original work the eyes aren't open that wide and the face in general is mroe contorted.

As for shading, your dark tones on the left arm don't really describe the form of an arm and the shade in the forearm is incongruous with the rest of your lighting. To avoid this you should plot out the general direction of light in the whole image before working into specific regions.

Like, it's insisted you do every menial exercise before even looking at the next lesson, but I don't think it's necessary.
Do what you can, and move along without getting hung up on every specific detail, and revisit exercises and lessons if you're no good. Obviously don't jump straight into the hardest lesson, but don't not attempt harder exercises simply because you haven't done the previous lessons.

Just don't spend a month or whatever drawing only boxes or cylinders in the "challenges", only to move on to the next lesson and find out you've wasted time.

Also avoid the community like the plague.

For one, I think the way I am holding the pencil for shading might be wrong. I hold it almost horiontally and I have to test it out under my drawing before applying it so I have a bunch of little scribbles.

This is such shit advice and is coming from someone who sounds like they’ve never actually did this shit successfully.

Here’s how to study hands, faggot:
1. Realize that just copying shit doesn’t help you to draw from imagination.
2. Learn the bones of the hand and be able to draw them easily.
3. Learn the basic shapes for the anatomy of a hand. Don’t actually study real anatomy. That’s what /beg faggots do.
4. Draw the hand using those easy shapes over and over—referring back to the reference if you have to.
5. Eventually you don’t need ref and can draw hands from imagination using basic shapes.
6. You can stop here and bullshit the detail or you can copy a bunch of hands—but this time you’re not copying like an ignorant faggot. You are constructing it using basic shapes and then applying the details afterwards.

Just copy hand poses, it's the faster and more practical way to learn how to draw hands.
Learning the bones and muscles of the human body is only going to really help you once you already know how to draw the basic shape of the human body parts.
Which you learn through copying from references.
Please don't give advice if you don't know what you're talking about.
A lot of people here on /ic/ will take your advice very seriously, especially here in the /beg/ thread so please don't post stupid shit like this.

No you don’t, you retarded nigger. Unless you are an /int, all you are going to do is copy lines like an ignorant faggot and not learn shit. You learn the basic shapes by watching video courses of how other people do it. Making your own basic shapes is reinventing the wheel.

I think you should use less lines but make them longer instead.
Your gesture gets very hard to read because you repeat the same lines a bunch of times.
You can be messy in a gesture, but you shouldn't repeat lines if it doesn't add anything to the gesture.

Both contain the same information to a certain degree so you can start with either.

Any tips on how to keep my sketching clean? I've actually been doing great progress, but now I feel like the mess I make when I'm sketching is really hindering me. The first problem is that things reach a point where I don't know what the fuck is going on anymore, and the second, is that the mess really makes it hard to finish things, since I have to do a lot of cleanup on the sketch itself after I'm done.

Is it as simple as having multiple sketching steps, where the first is simple blocking, for instance, and then you kinda sketch something a bit more detailed over that, and so on, or should I be striving to keep everything clean from the start?

Any help would be appreciated, because this has been a really big problemo.

Get good at drawing first, which will take a while, then bother with colors and other pretty things.

Your art will only be as good as the underlying drawing and good rendering won't save a shitty drawing.

You know that you can't blame bad anatomy on the subject matter being a robot, do you?

The use of the few shadows is good and effective at adding some depth. The animu-faces are cute, the robot arms/hands look pretty cool. The bottom right one in particular, although the bottom left is kind of a mess. I can't really tell whats going on with those fingers. The overall arrangement of everything looks nice, too.

The full figure is just terrible, though. Garbage proportions, extremely awkward pose that fails at everything it seems to want to accomplish. The whole thing looks like a bunch of symbols stacked on top of each other with no regards to how they are connected. It would probably help if you studied some more anatomy and constructed the figure first without clothes, then looked into how cloth acts and put the clothing over the figure. Those stilt-hoof-legs might work if you put the same effort into their design as you did with the arms in the close-up.

If the nose is the only thing you notice that is off about that face then maybe a couple of facial anatomy studies might be of your interest.

That's the most retarded thing I've ever heard.
No, you don't need to be able to draw something realistically to stylize it.
That's retarded.
Do you really think most cartoonists out there can draw a human figure realistically? What about anime artists? Mangaka literally learn to draw in a manga style from day 1, no realistic bullshit.
Jesus if there's one misconception I could ban from this board, it's this one.

Shit dude I leave for a few minutes to take a shower and come back to this? Yes it's anime, and I realize I still need a better grasp of facial anatomy.
I'm just gonna go back to practicing with references.

Peter Han specifically said when doing the lines, don't go above or below the line, keep drawing it straight
You should probably do the week 1 exercises until you can draw decent lines and circles

thank u anon! had to stop myself from using the color picker so I spent at least 15 minutes trying to get a good skin color. Also by adding thickness do you mean like making the fold(? darker? or wider? or higher? sorry I'm kinda stupid

thank you anon, I probably should have taken more time to improve it before posting it here, but your advice was very helpful anyway. What's the most effective way to get good at anatomy/anatomy+clothing? I haven't been drawing very long and I want to make sure that I'm learning in a way that won't make me worse at art.
Here's another quick (unfinished) sketch I did, I know the legs are fucky but I'm not completely sure why.
