Looking at my 5-10 year progress makes me a little upset, because I wasted a lot of time running around in circles before I even started learning the fundies. But I was literally in 5th grade a decade ago, so I figure I should not beat myself up over it too much. I regret not learning more when I was younger, but now I have to make up for that lost time now.

I honestly wouldn't redo anything except for maybe a year or two I wasted not drawing and only playing video games.
I think because I spent the last decade figuring out how/what I ultimately I want to draw, I have the tools to build a somewhat unique style.It's reflective of my artistic journey. If I had the chance to zap away the skills I built over the decade and start over with the knowledge I have now, my art wouldn't be the same, maybe it would be better, my anatomy would be on point and I'd have a better understanding of perspective, but I've grown to like my artwork even if it's flawed. I know that if I work hard, my flawed art that I still love will get even stronger.

its hard to think about stuff like this because maybe you work super diligently in a different life but it causes you to get hit by a bus or get a brain anueryism. I think the only real benefit of looking to the past is to direct your actions in the present.
With that in mind I think I would have wanted to read discord less and play less mindless repetitive games, less filler activities more impactful/memorable activities, like camping or reading new books.

Not really. In 2007ish CGP didn't exist. You had the conceptart website but everyone was a dick just like /ic/ in those times (to beginners). You had plenty of books going around but all of them were really old texts with bad monochrome scans. For video tutorials you had vilppu, some old gnomon stuff, and, if you were lucky with moms credit card, the CA online classes.

There was virtually nothing on the internet to learn from. Youtube was just growing and all the youtube stars today were in the same community level playing field. I sure as hell wish I was a kid today with all the resources post 2012. The ambition was just not the same after high school.

I don't know about optimized PC for art only but I believe RAM and CPU are the most important bits, as well as a good display with IPS panel, which have the best colors iirc.
It depends on what else you do on your PC aside from art, though if that is the only thing you do then a cheap PC would work just as well.
Check logicalincrements to get an idea of entry level builds.

Have you tried sculpting or painting (traditionally)?
Sometimes just changing up the medium helps you see things a bit differently. Also I’m sure you’ve looked at the way other artists’ draw faces, but I’d try compiling a bunch of stylistic faces you like and copying the same way people do med’s heads, and straight up stealing the way they stylize things. I can tell you’re trying to get a unique look to your characters, but sometimes you just need to steal from existing canon until you figure out a way to make it look aesthetically correct and unique.

OK so your argument is that you don't think kids are worse off for having stories made milder. I think that can be true but not always, and it's useless if you leave in the ''bad'' bits without the cultural context for them to make sense being there. I don't think the point of older stories is just to scare or desensitize kids. In for example Rhodesian, American Indian, and Ugandan fairy tales you have bizarre scenes and stories, with characters not always being spared, but the ''bad'' elements are there specific to that culture to teach their a world-view, along with bits of ''grownup'' concepts.

In the 20th century you had writers taking fairy tales from around the world and changing them just a little, entire British generations were raised on the fairy books. Those were a far cry from the completely neutered modern children's stories where the moral was ripped out along with the ''bad'' bits.

in that case you do have to take into consideration that despite culture still being a thing, we also do experience a lot of culture shift in the western world. which can lead to old fairytales or stories to be nothing more than shock value to essentially scare children into obidience or teach a moral by force, because otherwise the child may face a terrible consequence (from cut off fingers, to abduction or death). you also have to think about that a lot of the values taught in older stories slowly lose significance over time.
i don't see a point in raising children on "horror stories", when there can be the opportunity to shift children stories into a more modern tone that can still carry the same amount of significance now to the younger generation than it did for previous ones with their set of stories.

The point about culture shift is a good one, but when everything is a muddy sanitized stew of different cultures, it may be especially important to try and retain some history and teach your original stories, whatever they may be. Values indeed lose significance over time. I think shifting stories to a modern tone can work, but I'm skeptical of them always being able to retain their original significance, and message.

Here's an example story: in the middle eastern fairy tale The King Who Would Seek Paradise, a young king forces a wise man to show him paradise. When he finally sees it, he returns a decrepit old man, and 800 years passed. The story is rooted in religious tradition and may be a warning about utopian ideas. Now I imagine say a modern Disney take on it. The prince runs off after a pop culture reference, and enters a magical kingdom of pop culture references. He's taught that sharing is caring, and when he comes back a week has passed. Baby Yoda makes a cameo.

I normally try radically change what I do all the time anyways
So like as an example if I get stuck just drawing heads from imagination in the same few angles and I realise wtf I'm doing, I try draw the head like completely different - from harshly below, the head turned and looking, harshly above etcetcetc and then I realise how shit I am and I go find a reference.
If I'm doing boxes but always the same kind of box, again, radically change. It kind of puts me in a different mindset, and I find that I branch from it somewhat (like from heads at harsh angles to entire body construction at harsh angles & all bent and dynamic (at least attempted dynamic))
Otherwise I don't really have ideas except for the stuff I wanna get better at, like painting, but I'm clueless how to progress with it except just trying

i think you give way too little credit to modern media. while you might not be in the target audience anymore for shit like tangled, frozen, brave, moana and the like they do still retain a set of morals while also handling more adult themes like growing up, becoming stronger and being able to deal with some shit life throws at you. they also do have themes thrown in that may appeal more to an adult audience as well.
i do agree though, that not every idea of a fairy tale or children story that may have been more relevant for previous generations is adapted with care or retains the previous message, but to say that it would be the case for everything just sounds like "modern media bad, young people fags".

What I really like about Digimon as a kid's show is that they aren't beholden to the games or merchandising (not as much anyway), so they basically can just do something completely different each season. Moreover, they deal with more meaningful themes to youth. Sibling rivalries, responsibilities, tempering your emotions, the importance of family, all that stuff. There's also something really, really satisfying about seeing the relationship between the digimon and the partner grow deeper and deeper (part of why season 4 was absolute fucking trash).

But holy fuck, did Tamers step it up a notch (spoilers). Shit got dark.
No more "turning into an egg" when defeated. You fucking die. You deal with the ramifications of death. You deal with failure, self-doubt and depression. You deal with the philosophical implications of inadvertently creating sentient life. Character arcs and digimon-partner relationships run so much deeper. Your protagonists' links to their digimon run so deep that they share their pain while in combat, and eventually, you will yourself to literally fuse with them. You deal with real loss, uncertainty, and desperation. And maybe some of it comes in the form of an enemy and situation so dire it threatens to literally extinguish all forms of life.
It's still enjoyable to me today. I can't even begin to describe the goosebumps I get when I hear the computer voice say "Biomerge Digivolution".

i'd even go as far as to say it would be very near fucking perfect if Ryo didn't exist as a character
