Best books for absolute beginners of drawing? Also, graphic design?

>> No.4286154

My favorite book is "Fuck Off and Die: An Easy Guide to Not Being Such a Humongous Flaming Faggot" By Lurk Moar

>> No.4286195

>>4286154
Thanks for not helping.

>> No.4286202

Do the exercises in “drawing on the right side of the brain “, “keys to drawing”, “ figure drawing:design and invention” by Hampton, and “fun with a pencil” by Andrew Loomis (you can get the pdf to this one online it’s fairly short.) also check this out: https://hubpages.com/art/how-to-draw-learn (I know it’s on this site but just in case you missed it)

what's the point of recommending books when you are retard who can't read?

How did you arrive at that conclusion?

You, I don't appreciate your hate speech. Did it ever occur to you that I didn't know there was a drawing tutorial in the page sticky? Or that there could be a bunch of books other than the tutorial on this page that I don't know about?

>> No.4286224

>>4286216
No problem mate, just always try looking around before creating a thread. People on this site can be ruthless

>> No.4286232

>>4286216
>Did it ever occur to you that I didn't know there was a drawing tutorial in the page sticky?
That's why you fucking read it you faggot. It literally says "One-Stop Beginners' Guide"

>You, I don't appreciate your hate speech
I don't know from which tumblrina hole you crawled out of but if everyone was as retarded as you the whole catalog would be full of these pointless stupid threads, which can be avoided by simply having the common courtesy to read the only pinned post on this whole board.

>> No.4286241

>>4286232
Dude chill the fuck out, Jesus. He made a mistake and he’ll learn from it. Just let this thread die, it isn’t that fucking crucial

>> No.4286248

>>4286232
What the fuck is your goddam problem? I don't read stickies. They're the same fucking rules every fucking section. Go call a psychologist for fucking anger management therapy, you fucking clown asshole. Also, you should read the rules maybe you wouldn't offend me with the word retard, you fucking stupid piece of garbage. Disrespecting people like that is not going to make things better, you'll only make people mad, fucking douchebag. Take some fucking classes on talking to people you 4chan cocksucker.

>> No.4286250

Would he really learn if everyone spoonfed him and no one told him to fuck off?

kinda the point here

>> No.4286253

>>4286248
Don’t let these people get to you. Just ignore him. You made a mistake, you know what it is, and it’s fine. Just let the thread die

>> No.4286256

>>4286241
There are also a lot of drawing books around I can assume.

>> No.4286262

>>4286250
What the fuck, are you serious? Spoon feed me? How the fuck did you learn? Did you make everything yourself? You didn't have any help? Wouldn't you want others to have proper material already available? Why don't you fuck off? What's this section for? Don't you think it's for helping each other? WTF? Fucking 4chan assholes!!!!

>> No.4286281

>>4286262
You stupid fuck. This is not about you asking for help, it's about you asking for help for questions that don't need their own thread.
Why do you think the sticky exists? Everytime stupid thread like this gets made, it kills another one.
You don't have the respect for the board to look around for 5 seconds before making a thread, and then spazz when you get shunned for it?
grow the fuck up

>> No.4286355

>>4286241
Get bent. The catalog is already stuffed with "How so I draw X" bullshit, E-celeb bullshit, and illiterate retards who post their low tier sketch without even bothering to see if this board even has drawthreads. We don't need more brainless apes taking up board slots with these dumb questions when we already have a fucking sticky right at the top, a goddamn sqt always in the catalog, and a beginner thread WITH ITS VERY OWN UNIQUE EXPANDED STICKY. If you somehow came to 4chan with no knowledge of what the word "lurkmoar" means then let this be a warning that you should brush up on your netiquette.
>>4286262
The whole reason why we have a sticky is so that every Tom, Dick, and Harry that stumbles on this board doesn't ask the same fucking question for the umpteenth time. The sticky is a prewritten guide so fuckshits like you can be pointed there instead of you killing a fucking thread just so that he can copy paste the exact same shit you would have read if you had eyes and the foresight to use them. The mere fact that I even have to explain why we have a sticky is exactly why we should have a sticky.

idk if you got any good graphic design recs yet as i didnt want to read these retards arguing, but here's my top list

- TYPOGRAPHY: "First aid in typography" is a good start, "The complete manual of typography" when you're ready to get into the real thing, "The elements of typographic style" if you become a hardcore typo nerd. And if you ever want to learn how to design a typeface, good luck and start with "how to create typefaces" by cristobal henestrosa & others, and then for the real thing - "designing type" by karen cheng. "Stroke" by Noordzij is a classic and a must if you really want to understand how a letter is born.
Or, if you want to just jump into typography head first because you want to know everything asap, "haver y componer" by francisco pizzaro is the hottest thing rn.

- COLOR: The one and only "Elements of Color" by Johannes Itten; The newer the version, the better. It's an essential for both designers and painters. Beautiful book and a short one. "Color
A workshop for artists and designer" version 2 is a good follow up, although a bit longer and more practical.

Now, uncategorized stuff, but equally important:
- "Grid systems" by kimberly elam - don't even attempt creating any type of layout before at least looking through this book
- "Logo modernism", "Designing brand identity", "how to be a graphic designer without losing your soul", "thinking with type" - just stock up on these and refer to them as often as possible.

- "The nondesigner's design book" - now this is a weird one, but if you're an absolute total beginner and have no idea how to design a poster or set any type of text, this is a life saver. You can actually start with this one and then read the "real" ones. Comfy and easy to digest.

good luck if you ever decide to become a gd! and remember - typography ALWAYS comes first. form comes second, colour comes third.

From reading the thread you'll ngmi. Probably you'll stop trying in a few weeks/months

as for my drawing book recs:

- "dynamic bible" along with peter han's twitch streams or dynamic sketching class - to ensure you aren't stuck drawing people only and that you stay on top of your linework skills. dont attempt to consume it in 3 months, just do one lesson, draw something you enjoy, try another lesson, etc.

- keys to drawing and drawing on the right side of the brain - im really NOT a big fan of these. i think you should just tackle them quickly, try first couple exercises and once you see some effects, move on. the main thing you should get from these is observational skills - ability to copy ref or reality.

- perspective made easy - one of the first books you should read, its short, easy and quick. get comfortable with the fact that perspective is a part of EVERY drawing even if you dont know it yet.

- steve huston's "figure drawing for artists" - this is definitely my go-to book for figure drawing; no bullshit, comprehensive, easy to follow and prevents you from making dumb mistakes early on.

- hampton's "figure drawing" - i personally would recommend this after huston's book, and its good for mixing your perspective and rendering skills.

all of them you can find in the sticky, video course and artbook threads.

> Wouldn't you want others to have proper material already available?
There is proper material already available. You can get it in the sticky, right in front of everyone coming here. So either stop being a triggered bitch and read it or GTFO.
Oh, and in any other community you'd get similar treatment, albeit toned down on insults. If you go to, say, some artistic subreddit, reddit mods'd tell you to read the sidebar right after closing your thread.

Most of the people here are going to recommend stupid shit like "Drawing on the right side of the brain" or "Loomis" or dumb shit like that.

Get good at the fundamentals.

Just use Drawbox for several months. You can do it completely for free or get personalized critiques for literally a few dollars a month for assignments.

Also draw for fun. Don't just grind away. You'll burn out and hate drawing at that point. Even if your stuff sucks, find enjoyment in it. Find the parts that you enjoy. Nobody else has to see the work. Over time, you'll get better, so long as you put in the mileage AND be honest with your self-assessments and take critiques seriously.

After a few months, you'll be better than most of the people on this board.

Then maybe do some anatomy and perspective.

Throw in some light and color once you feel comfy enough. I recommend Izzy Medrano's gumroad tutorials. Literally all the material you need when it comes to light, color, and composition. He also has a patreon which is worth checking out for deals and critiques.

>> No.4290809

>>4290802
Also.

Because I forgot to mention:

Good anatomy: Hampton (an actual good recommendation that is usually given out here). Also Morpho. Great, in depth set of books.

Perspective: A lot of books will get the same shit across. Perspective Made Easy is one. The Marshall Vandruff 1994 perspective lectures are also great. Full set of lectures for $12. You won't get much better than that.

There's also a ridiculously huge set of perspective lectures on NMA, but it seems like fucking overkill. I could be wrong.

Also. Figure out what you want to draw/paint. Are you going more for a realism style? Probably pick up some books/videos on representational art. NMA has plenty of quality ones. If you're more in the mood for imaginative illustrations and designs, then look into that kind of stuff (e.g. creature design, mech design, etc.).

There are a lot great resources out there, but not a ton of it is well known.

But as I mentioned before, get your feet wet and do some Drawabox. It's proven. It's based on the dynamic sketching courses done at CGMA, and those lectures are fire. The fact that you're getting them for free on the internet is crazy. The fact that you can get personalized critiques on the assignments for dirt cheap is also crazy.

Focus on a bit at a time. This is a journey, not a race.

This thread is such an excellent example of what a fucking shithole normalfag and underage sewer this place has become. Stop feeding newfag retards and let them figure shit out themselves or fucking leave.
