I hope you don't give up, anon. Yes, there are always things that you can improve on, but drawing art well requires you to work on a number of things seemingly simultaneously before a picture becomes "good." You're upset because you've been drawing for a year and you're not more advanced in your opinion, and yet look at what you've done so far. No regular normie would be able to draw that.

Hey, I’m a very beginner artist. I understand it’s complete shit and I am quiet scare to show anything I do because it’s 4chan. But, I went to the big sticky and just attempted to the the Igor Stravinsky upside down exercise. Completely fucked up the proportions and shit so I stopped half way. People tell me to practice my fundamentals, value, perspective, ect, but I never know how to practice efficiently. I have entire stacks of paper of drawing geometric shapes in perspective forms but when I try to apply it to a human figure It never looks right. Nothing I ever make looks proportional.

I have not been drawing super consistently. There will be times where I just stop because I feel like I'm not making progress only to start back up again. I guess that's part of the problem.

More shadows, it's flat, even though I see you tried to change values of some of the parts, it needs some dark contrast, like under the Right cymbal and between the high hat there needs to be a darker yellow almost black. Also drums have more knobs on them to tighten and tune. Don't be scared to put more paint on the canvas, I can still see the canvas and the strokes are blended together. Basically go over it all again and add some dark deep tones.

I tried tracing over one of your drawings with focus on line quality and readability. Tried to go by the following rules with the time I had:
1. connect lines properly
2. be careful with arbitrary changes in line density/thickness. Look at favorite artists who use similar brushes. You can also try something like the CSP flat brush (maybe fiddle with pressure sensitivity), it's what I used here. I often use it because I like working on only 1 layer all the way while slowly sculpting out lines
3. if in doubt, don't add extra lines to define muscles etc, especially if you're drawing girls. That's not to say that you can't have a bunch of lines, but when you do that the difficulty level goes up a lot and you must know anatomy and volumes really well (I don't so I took it easy in my version)

disregard the qualities of individual features, their placement is the single most important thing for both crossing the uncanny valley and capturing likeness as well.

for the record, i think the eyes aren't bad, other than the slightly fuzzier eyebrow on one side and their general assymetry. also, some of what you disproportioned wasn't inherently wrong, for example my edit lost the wide and big chinned look of the guy, but generally i would suggest nailing down standard proportions and construction before delving into stylizations.

It's okay anon take a deep breath. You need to focus your practice more. Drawing aimlessly is causing you to progress retardedly slow. Next time you are practicing and not drawing you need to put your all into that particular field for a few pages. For example: "I'm bad at people." Solution: Do pages of JUST GESTURE. Really focus on the forms and put your all behind each one. BE DELIBERATE. Then you move onto another field you aren't very good add.
"I'm bad at construction." Solution: Work ONLY ON CONSTRUCTION for a few pages.

I'm breaking this up into another paragraph because this is worth emphasizing. It is better to focus on a few drawings then to just scribble to fill up a page quota. Simultaneously this will burn you out if you keep it up too long. Solution: Do some deliberate practice (Search that term in Bing), take a break and draw something fun after a few pages. I like drawing dumb shit like political cartoons during the apocalypse or drawing weird H.P. Lovecraft nonsense.
In Conclusion: Practice, Draw something fun, Practice. YOU GOT THIS :)

You don't need to learn construction before producing "real" work. You don't have to bind yourself to atomized routines. You can draw whatever you feel like and use that as your tool for understanding whatever concept, including construction. Try imagining a scene/character that you've always wanted to draw and spend a few nights drawing it to the best of your ability, with construction. Feel free to keep refs (fav artists' works, photos etc) open and constantly refer to them while working. It will be shit but it doesn't matter, you gained a ton of exp and can reflect on the mistakes made. This process of critical thinking is your key to improvement.

(You can do isolated exercises but don't do them just because you're "supposed to")

Hey anon, relax man. Lemme critique this then give you some advice.

Critique:
-It's very hard to tell how close your lines are without the reference. I don't know if that block has worn edges or if you can't make a straight line to save your life.
-Secondly, the bottom left corner you smudged the lines over on each other and makes the planes appear off.
- The light looks like it's coming from the top left, as indicated by the shadows on the ground, yet the "background shadow" is directly behind.

Advice/How to study:
- Take a break. Don't draw for at least 2 or 3 days
- When you do end your break, find an artist you love and just copy a work by them that you enjoy. Give yourself a project that you like and enjoy doing.
- I harp on this a lot but studying to death is how you kill an artist. So take a breather, do a fun project, honestly maybe even 2 projects and then go back to studying.

im assuming you have a basic knowledge of how to connect primitive shapes to make a person so try something like this. Think about whatever complex group of shapes you want to draw (a person) within a bigger very simple shape, like a box or a sphere. It may be easier to start by drawing or marking some anchor parts, like the parts that are closest to the outside of the box. Treat it like a puzzle. If you're not sure where to put the next piece, measure halves/thirds/quarters of the box edges. You are basically taking the perspective of a box and slowly doing basic math to apply it to a person at an angle. To reiterate, having good knowledge of anatomy and (more importantly) proportions is pretty important to drawing people in perspective.

>> No.4283323

Oh yeah forgot to mention something that is probably obvious: a sphere is going to give you a distorted fisheye look, and a box is just going to be basically a slice of 1/2/3 point perspective.

If you do want them to be finer overall try reducing the pressure sensitivity on your tablet software. And even if you want super thin lines, line weight still exists and you still have to pay attention to it, making fatter lines in some places for emphasis and not in others, which I think is more your problem as someone else mentioned.

I'm pretty /beg/ myself, but from what i understand, a good painting has a good drawing underneath. If you dont have structure to follow you will end up with a painting that is not structurally sound. This painting shows you need to practice perspective and as you add more forms and structures value will play more of a role as well. Keep at it.

Draw more from observation and really think about your lines before you put them down. This image shows you have a basic understanding of forms and how to rotate them. It also shows you have some level of understanding value. It just looks like things are in the wrong place. Lines aren't careful and everything looks rushed and lazy. I mean, this is the "best you can do" but you aren't even staying in the lines when you color. You aren't following your lines when you ink.

My advice would be to practice lines and ellipses. Then go get a coloring book and just stay in the damn lines. Find an artist you like and get to tracing, taking care to draw as the artist would, flowing strokes and complete lines. None of the start/stoppy shit I see when you trace your own lines

No one has given any helpful advice so:

>better line quality
you have random open lines everywhere, not a problem when you start sketching but eventually you need to place solid clean lines instead
>line dependence
lines don't actually exist, they only are illusion between two different values. keep this in mind especially when drawing with pencil
>weak shading
don't shade like that. putting down even shade of tone doesn't take that long if you have softer pencil and just slide it slideaways. random scribbling as shading doesn't look good. Also keep in mind which direction you shade in, for example the visor should be shaded horizontally

rotate your pictures too, no one wants to crank their neck

You're jumping on rendering(coloring/shading) stage way too early. Try constructing the head first.
Google ''Rileys method face'', those are the planes of the head. Study and try to understand it.
Now You should come back to this picture and construct the head sketch, with faces, as shown on rileys head. Just fill them with flat color, remember how light would interact with the faces and color shadows/highlights according to that.
Correctly built head with meh rendering will always look better than polished turd that has huge anatomical flaw

Try harder, there’s fuck all value and hue difference between the light and dark in your image. Open up the ‘curve adjustment’ panel in photoshop and start there.
