Getting to Naf's level seems unfathomable, but I know it is reachable. I just have to work harder to learn, and push myself to make better art. Honestly Naf's post made me feel a little sad too, cause it made me realize just how far I have to go. i don't know if he's ever explained it somewhere, but my observations are this:
i see that he consistently draws whole scenes with characters in environments, from imagination.
he doesn't paint his drawings either, meaning he's focusing entirely on perspective and design (of various kinds), the most crucial parts of drawing.
it also lets him finish his art quicker and move to the next thing.
as he focuses on drawing what he's interested in, scenes where shit is happening, i'm sure it's also easier for him to be invested in the improvement of what he draws as well.
put quite simply: he's a drawman. he likes drawing and he draws what he likes.
i don't see other people drawing the kind of stuff he draws. not in terms of subject matter, but in terms of what skills are exercised.
so obviously they don't get better at those skills that naf is constantly practicing.

so daddies who signed up for New Years Change 2: Year Long Challenge, what kind of goals are you gonna set yourself for the badge in a year's time?

I feel like I have a million different ideas on what I should do and get better at but need more concise, more tangible goals and not just a laundry list of little things like "suck less at perspective"
I'm a beg but I am currently considering maybe "complete first commission", even if it's just from a friend or family or something - a lot of the trouble there would be feeling like my works too shitty to exchange for money, and getting over that. I think thats a good one? Obviously I need a bunch more.
This is probably the most excited about a challenge I've been!

over time he's developed an intuitive sense of perspective.
that's completely expected if one is to spend time drawing the way he does.
when you draw something, you are exercising your ability to solve all the problems that arise in completing that drawing.
if you're gonna constantly draw finished scenes of characters in environments, as naf does, then you're going to be solving all the problems that arise when you try to do that. many of those problems, maybe most, will be perspective problems.
so it's no wonder he has an intuitive sense of perspective.

they aren't even inherently more difficult problems, they're just different.
you can choose to tackle those problems as well.

you have to be aware on what flaws and mistakes you made on your imagination work.
List it down, and do mindful studies on where you're weak at, then go back to doing finished artworks. Use a reference. Finish your work, Evaluate where you went wrong. Rinse and repeat.

Oh but they will. From a purely pragmatic point of view. Let's take KJG. Anyone that draws will statistically never even come close to his level. But if you behave AS IF it's possible, you will draw more and try more, and increase your odds to get higher even if you never reach the target. You know that cliché where people always want to be like a kid again? It's partly because kids don't know limitations and don't give a shit, to a kid anything is possible and as a consequence, if they really want it, they'll work at it nonstop hundreds of hours without a second thought.

If you lament things that you may or may not be powerless to change, you decrease your odds. If you're constantly looking for a solution, you increase them. It's a self fulfilling prophecy both ways. The guy that doesn't let anything slow him down simply gets more work done, and ends up in a higher spot even if he fails. This hooks into the /ic/ saying of ''just draw''.

when you draw from imagination, and you seek to make the drawing satisfy your tastes, then you'll learn what you need to learn in order to do that.
that learning may indeed include reading a little scott robertson or loomis, or looking at other artists, or getting some reference photos.
but those things are not done on their own, they are serving you in your discovery and understanding of how to produce what is pleasing and interesting and satisfying to you. studying should provide an answer to a specific question, a solution to a specific problem.
you don't "do more studies", that's like solving math problems without any meaningful context.
if you want to make images from your imagination, then constantly doing so is going to be the strongest driving force for your learning, because it is going to provide extremely specific and meaningful problems for you to figure out how to solve.

been strictly pencils for trad forever and I just produced what a kindergartener would paint

it really just takes practice for you to get a feel for the medium.
i never really tried to paint strictly with gouache (only water colors with occasional gouache if i needed it) also did figure painting with oil for a bit.
but yeah, really depends on what your ultimate goal is, unless you're trying to go for some super tight realism, paint broadly and chromatically. try not to use too much white or black unless it's super sparingly.
but again, depends on what you're trying to accomplish...

Oh I forgot, for painting having the right tools really helps, especially for gouache/watercolors. Make sure you're using 100% cotton paper and preferably something 140lb+++. Cheap paper REALLY makes it difficult to work with. Same with if your paints are shit quality. If you're just starting out, you still want something student/mid grade...

I'm not after super tight realism at all, more expressionist grounded in reality(I suppose?)
I wanna be able to paint what's infront of me with decent enough accuracy, but play with light and colours and whatnot to bring out certain aspects.
I do also like a messy/loose kind of look - I wanna do plein air with gouache/oil/watercolour (I just got gouache first as I heard it can be a bit forgiving) as a cathartic, enjoyable sort've thing where I can bring out something in what I see.

always, always put it off though cause even just mixing colours to get what you want seems so scary, along with literally every other aspect of the medium
