IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

That's just part of the process I'm afraid. Anybody of age who has a desire to gain any semblance of proficiency is going to become frustrated when their skillset doesn't match up with their vision. All you can do is accept that you will absolutely fail and you will keep failing and take every failure as growth. Don't get caught up in the end of the journey because that's many thousands of hours away.
To end it on a positive note though I can say from personal experience that it becomes more enjoyable to study over time even if you have not yet reached your end goals yet.

Hey anon Happy New Year! You've got cool designs to work from but don't forget to be original.
Critique:
- Work on line confidence, you chicken scratch to much. Check out dynamic sketching by Peter Han on YouTube and do those exercises whenever you can.
- Study deer and deer anatomy.
- Don't draw on lined paper
- When crosshatching, start by drawing everything, EVERYTHING in one direction and angle then move on for darkening.
How to study:
- Do Peter Han home work at least 3 times
- Do a few pages of deer gestures

Links for studying:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgDNDOKnArk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHoqh27vQRw

The reason you shouldn't use lined paper is a matter of pride. That took you time to do and you should respect yourself and your art by doing it on clean paper.

>>4275856
You have some nice lines anon. This picture seems to be a bit small for my eyes, but thanks for resizing.
Critique:
- Decent at line confidence
- Faces are what you need to grind on
- Hands are hard and you hid one of them
- Looks like more than just a gesture so it needs shading
How to study:
- Do like 6-7 pages of gestures
- Do a few pages of hands
- Study heads, study skulls. Draw a few pages of heads. Check the sticky for Loomis heads.

Have a happy new year anon.
-

Is it a mark of improvement that you are able to draw more than 1 full-figure drawing in a single day?

This sounds dumb, but any mark of improvement, is improvement. Your second figure may not be any better than the first, but the fact is that you now have the endurance to do two.

Yes, it is good to build a habit for the parts of a hobby that you have to "practice", making it a ritual and second nature.

What I love about this, is that you clearly love drawing and are having fun. DO NOT stop having fun and drawing fun shit.
Critique:
- The enthusiasm is awesome! You are still a beginner though and it shows through.
- Your lines lack confidence and purpose. I say this a lot "blah blah blah line confidence." You also have a purpose problem. Purpose means you put that line in that spot at that length at that angle on purpose. You have lines aimlessly running to connect faces.
- You also chicken scratch several times for basic lines
- Some of your gestures are quite good. The ones that use the least amount of lines and the curvy ones show you see motion.
- Your faces need a lot of practice.
How to study:
- Check out dynamic sketching by Peter Han on YouTube and do those exercises whenever you can.
- Keep grinding gestures. Do the equivalent of 8 pages of gesture.
- Read Loomis head and hands (see beginner books). Do 3 pages of heads
-Practice line economy. Line economy is using the least amount of lines to show the most amount of something. Pick a few gestures and AFTER you've gotten better at line confidence try and draw them in a set amount of lines.

She's pure in a sense, but don't be too prudish, she'll drink up your blood and say thank you, she's ruthless. As I'm writing this now, in my other hand is my cock, because now I just wait for her biological clock. Mount me and scratch me, there's no need to rush, because whenever I think of her I start to bust. She would beat me and bruise me, but I am not bothered, because even if I'm dead, my children she'll father. And As I lay down, on this Christmas eve, I hear the family next door starting to grieve. It's like your hard lines want to be at the front, but you keep putting shading and shit over them. Make a choice. Keep the lines, or don't, but if you do, keep them crisp. Also as far as composition, it's just that top like... inch or so that has a grid that throws it all off. >>4276182
The eyes are kinda large. Also your shadows are way too subtle and everywhere an edge is, as if to replace hard lines. More dramatic shadows would give it some more life and depth. Like, everything should have the shadow detail the nose does. The inside of the elbows, the wrinkles in the dress that aren't there. etc.

I like your colors and you’re trying to shade to convey actual forms which is great.

I would say work on your eyes. They look dead inside. I’d recommend not doing that white fade highlight thing and and making the pupils so small, even if it was apart of the reference it is your job as an artist to look at it and make it more aesthetically correct. The second thing is to push the limbs/pose! It looks stiff, don’t be afraid to push things- so more gesture drawing to get that looseness. Hope this helped. Keep going.

You messed up the perspective in the legs, and hands. The legs and hands closest to us are way smaller than the legs furthest from us, also remember you can't achieve something being further or closer to us simply by making it bigger or smaller. The closer forms will always have a vp inwards the horizon line, and further forms will be more outwards. For inking I recommend a dip pen, if you like the set weight of a fine liner try a spoon nib, or the classic G if you want a flexible option.

>> No.4276266

>>4276202
I also have to add you deliberately flew away from your converging lines, most notable at the knees, why would you consciously bend it when you already made a straight grid for it? That defeats the purpose of making the grid in the first place. Look at the leg closest to us also, it's bending completely outwards, it's not how a mechanical piece operates. I highly recommend you try studying si and pler mechanical objects before you try to understand mechs, I also recommend you try drawing more organic objects also as they allow for more inaccuracies.

>>4276251
You aren't supposed to be drawing circles, circles are flat. Draw a square in the perspective you need it in, so basically draw the gun in boxes that relate to what you want to convey in terms of design. For anything circular you find thr center of the square in perspective by connecting corners to corners, left top corner to bottom right, and top right to bottom left. The intersection determines the center, now draw an axis line going back to the vp of the comverging lines of the planes of the box you drew for the barrel. If that axis line you just drew going to the vp turns those lines you drew in the square to find its center make them 90 degree angles, you will now be able to make an accurate ellipses by connecting them all together with an ellipse shape. An ellipses is a circle, but in perspective always remember that.

>The closer forms will always have a vp inwards the horizon line, and further forms will be more outwards.

if two forms are just translated in space, then their corresponding edges will still point towards the same vanishing points, irrespective of whether one is closer or not

also, the closer hand is supposed to be rotated slightly

>>4276266

again, i hardly understood any of what you said , but honestly i thought i had a pretty good grasp of perspective, so maybe it's just an issue of reading the picture wrong? the legs are supposed to have a zig-zag shape, for the record. otherwise seems like there are some fundamental issues i don't know about, anyways here's some other of my drawings

Not everything has the same vp, limbs like on a mech or a figure will be different. If you make an object smaller and one bigger to signify one is closer or further, but still have them pointing towards the same vp without the bigger one overlapping it will read like it's on the same distance, but one is smaller. You place a big box directly in front of us in the mide, and the converging lines are pointed as far as it can go on a sheet of A4 paper, it will just be a big close box. Now place another box that doesn't overlap the first one with its converging lines waaaay off of the paper, that box will read further than the first box. Even if the hand closest to us is tilting it's still reading as smaller than the furthest one, same with the legs.

ok, i understand this far, but what you're saying is that despite something like, lets say a box, being correctly drawn in perspective behind another box, it will actually appear to be at the same distance from the viewer unless they're overlapping? because i can't ever recall perceiving such a thing

>>You place a big box directly in front of us in the mide, and the converging lines are pointed as far as it can go on a sheet of A4 paper, it will just be a big close box. not sure what you meant in that first bit, but from the rest, if i understand correctly, you're trying to say that in order to make something appear further away i need to warp the perspective, effectively changing the angle of view on a lens? because that sounds very fishy, and i think you need to draw what you mean, chief, because it doesn't really make sense to me

Link and the horse need to be moved to the right a bit more to fit a rule of thirds frame. Also the horse seems small because his head is closer to us but maintains its smallness I think? If you're drawing your converging lines further off their placement it will be the opposite of warpped. I'll draw you something later I'm making deliveries at work rn. Yes it will appear at the same distance you'll be able to see the same amount of the top (or bottom) of the box indicating it's occupying the same plane. You can get rid of that if you determine the ground planes indicating it occupies another area in space, but then you will have the same points of cinversion creating a paradox. You can use that to your advantage though there isn't a right or wrong way to go about this, only ideas that seem good, and your ideas about how to draw the legs and arms in your mech designs aren't very good ideas since they aren't grounded to any fundamental truth. Try drawing these examples yourself or try to visualize it. As for you saying you never percieved it before that makes sense, you can't see something you don't know exists. Remember perspective gets warpped the closer your points converge also.

i drew guidelines over my sketch, and they converge to a point. I discovered the back of the mech actually was a bit off, but honestly the legs don't seem that far off for a freehand sketch, if i moved that one joint in the back leg a bit back seems like it would be ok. same for the hands, really, though i do agree that the closer one could be drawn a bit bigger.

>If you're drawing your converging lines further off their placement it will be the opposite of warpped

yes, i get what you're saying, i just said warped because whether you're going from a very short focal length to a very long one, or vice versa, it is technically warping the original image either way.

>Yes it will appear at the same distance you'll be able to see the same amount of the top (or bottom) of the box indicating it's occupying the same plane.

well, if the farther boxes' respective edges point towards the same vp as the closer one's, it will still be smaller by area on the page or display, including the planes, so i'm not sure by what metric you're measuring the 'amount of the plane being seen'

>As for you saying you never percieved it before that makes sense, you can't see something you don't know exists.

sounds like you're mentioning techniques to point to the viewer whether something is further or closer, because without them the drawing reads wrong, but to me it never ocurred that objects drawn at different distances from the viewer according to plain 3 point perspective seem to be equally distant, so it sounds like a piece of theory that's prescriptive without actually being descriptive to me

anyways, maybe you could redline my drawing, perhaps that would be more elucidative, because now i'm really curious what i'm missing

You got lazy on the grass and it shows. Also the end of a tree wouldn’t be that large. That’s far too disproportionate. A lot of the line(specifically dark) you added on the tree are also sloppy and don’t help much. Your shading lines are wobbly and aren’t consistent. Also near the bottom of the tree it looks like you have a branch going inside of the grass and I doubt that was the intent. Don’t shade near the top of those small pieces of grass if you don’t want to make it look like it’s going inside of the grass. Put the tree branch itself and have the grass surrounding it, not doing what it’s doing now

So I was wrong about the tree going inside of the grass but the critique still remains. Notice on the reference picture how the root and bottom of the tree is much more jagged and less circle shaped then you made it. It also has much more shading and goes into the ground. It isn’t flat on the bottom like you made it look. All of those dark lines you added on the tree can be made to look better by creating short dark lines with a curve to indicate the movement of that area of the tree. If you look at the bottom most line on the tree that you attempted to draw this it has a curve itself moving upwards. Try that

This is good, but I want to see less brush/pencil strokes in the sketch. When I draw with pen or do studies in a simplistic art program like MS Paint, I force myself not to give multiple strokes in one side. You are not chicken scratch terrible, but I kept getting distracted with the feet at the top left and how the toes have a lot of strokes. I am guilty with that from time to time, as unless I am rendering a sketch with shadows, I should not add extra sketch strokes to the drawing. Steve Huston is a great example of sketching with a minimal amount if strokes. I'm even currently looking at my own sketches where I did this correctly and incorrectly as well

Yeah with the first few feet I drew I spent too much time building volumetric figures and overthinking where the lines should go, especially with the toes. After a while I decided to just doodle with quick and minimal lines, to my surprise the feet came out better this way.
It's strange that I draw much more precise when i force myself to be less careful and more confident with the lines.

The biggest redpill is that you can draw anything at a professional level if you're willing to spend the time for it.
The only difference between an experienced artist and an amateur is that an experienced artist can do it faster, with less sketching beforehand.
If you don't believe me, next time you're going to draw something, do multiple sketches first, improve the drawing with each iteration.
Since these are simple sketches, you can be loose and experiment with your lines to see what looks better.
It could take you anywhere from 5 to 100 iterations depending on the complexity of what you're drawing, but I can guarantee you that the final piece is going to be exactly what you had in mind.
If it's not, you clearly haven't been improving with each iteration or you haven't done enough iterations.
It's a hard redpill to swallow, but trust me, bros, it's worth it.

>A beginner who doesn't have a developed perception of perspectives and anatomy
That's the fun part, you'll realise that perspective and anatomy are actually super fucking simple.
You see the world in perspective, you've been seeing it in perspective your entire life, you have years worth of visual data, all in perspective.
The reason /beg/s fail at perspective is because they rush things. They don't spend enough time on the actual setup because they want to get into the details fast.
Same for anatomy, everyone knows what a human looks like.
You've seen humans your entire life.
You just have to take the time to use that information.

Hey man your edges are fuzzy and wobbely, for example the doorframe is Something that should be one smooth unbroken line. If you're using photoshop just place your brush at the edge of the line hold shift and drag it along the edge, only works for exact horizontal and vertical lines however.
Secondly your values are a mess, you want to block everything in with a brush that has no or is low in opacity variation (opacity jitter 80-90%) so that you can block in with a single smooth value.
Then you work on transitions, on your figure they are quite harsh and patchy. I don't know if this is how other people do it but I just take the same brush I blocked in with and lower the "flow" to something like 1-5% (not in the brush-settings but in the brush toolbar up top) and then you just use the eye-drop tool and go to town.

you probably study anatomy a bit, but the big thing that I always mistaken which I think the mistake you are making is that the butt is not a part of the pelvis when in actuality, The butt IS the pelvis. meaning the bottom of the pelvis is also the lowest section of the butt. What you are doing is sticking two legs below the pelvis. Unless it's a taller girl in which case, you need to change the whole frame, make the shoulder wider.

Hey anon I hope you are well! I like that this appears to be original art and it is a cool look. This is one of the few beginner projects that looks actually finished so I have a lot to say.
Critique:
- I can't redline because no tablet, but the thing that strikes me the most is your light source isn't defined. Look at the (robotic?) knuckles holding the staff. The light is coming from right to left yet your shadows are as if the light is front to back.
- Backgrounds are important. I know that's not what you want critiqued but it matters.
- The neck and shoulders do not line up. He looks like a turtle
- The Left thigh is far too small and the whole left leg should be shifted over a bit. The leg appears too long
- It's good to see some colour
- I don't think you should render things until after the proportions and everything is fixed. I mean even the hair is already rendered.

How to fix:
- Fix the neck and shoulders issue
- Readjust the legs
- Isolate light source
- Fix background
- Spear doesn't look like it's being held

This is a bit more subjective but the story is misplaced. For example, why would anyone sit like that waiting for food to cook holding a spear? The expression doesn't convey that there is danger near so it seems like he's just holding the spear because he doesn't have a place to put it...like the ground.

Don't give up and remember not to get carried away. Finished, not perfect. It's better to work on more projects than spend weeks adjusting one.

I need some advice in this painting i'm planning to do.

I decided to make a painting with a pre-defined color pallete by the first time, so i made this thumbnail sketch to get my ideas sorted. It's a scene where my character is at the roof of a prison complex and there's a helicopter coming in the distance to evacuate him.

Thing is, the way the colors are bug me a lot. I chose blue and red because they make a good contrast, but i think there's way too much contrast in those colors, the character and the heli feel missplaced with the colours in the background.

What should i do? Should i change the colors? Should i stick with just red and yellow?

Should I study hairstyles from life or from Anime?

Anime is much easier to copy but I kind of want a sense of realism to my hair (i.e. is affected by gravity).

I guess that means that I have to have some kind of vision of what I want my art to look like; my inspiration for wanting to draw, I guess.

I kind of lost my original inspiration though, to be honest. I started because I wanted to make characters for Visual Novels—I prefer writing over drawing—but I’ve since stopped reading VNs because they felt like a waste of time. I feel like I have to always be drawing and so reading a VN or watching an anime for an hour just seems a bit off putting.

I don’t know if I should try to revive my old inspiration or keep grinding instead. I’m a bit lost here. All I can really understand about drawing is the grind to this arbitrary goal of enough mileage to be able to draw what I want.

But maybe I should just stop focusing on copying from life and copy anime instead—since that’s what originally got me into drawing.

Is it really necessary to have a goal or should I just keep grinding?

>Is it really necessary to have a goal or should I just keep grinding?
You don't need to have anything super detailed set in stone, but just have a general idea of what you enjoy drawing.
It is definitely important to know atleast to a certain degree what you want to do.
Just look at most western anime artists, their art looks like shit and you can immediately tell that it was made by a westerner simply because they studied ONLY from real life and believed that they could magically draw anime once they can draw realistically.

If you're really not sure, you could always do a bit of both I guess and see what you enjoy more.

In the modern age, doing anything where you just consume things is far easier and provides more positive reinforcement than doing anything else. Doing things is hard. Doing things takes fortitude and stamina. Playing guitar makes your fingers bleed and voice go out if you do it too much. Lifting weights more than you should can burst a bicep. Drawing too much can cause hand cramps and headaches. When you reach this point of exhaustion in an active activity, take a mother fucking break. This is why people imply you should rest/sleep by telling you to practice every day instead of once a week for 6 hours. the brain transitions newly acquired information into long term storage upon sleeping/repetition over time.

If you are never doing it because youre bored of doing it before you even start, you have motivation and self control issues and you need to go "consume" some youtube videos about how to get your shit together.

Keep going, it's overwhelming but helpful.

Work with references, try to find the forms in those. That'll help the chaos. Also don't pressure yourself into getting anatomy perfect right away.

You're on the right track anon. Don't forget to have fun while drawing and doing some things you love aside from learning!

Well before even starting with the muscles, lay down the foundation gesture to form. Have all the keymarks visualised. Than add the muscles.

These are some photos from the Hampton book, also a site about weight - I dunno if you can read the photo, basically your character should feel like it exists in gravity and wouldn't fall over - unless it's moving, like running quickly or something.

Like I said I don't know Mopho's book, maybe it covers the same topics.

>>4278277
Outline heavy means you're not thinking in forms, so stuff like foreshortening and creating depth gets a lot harder. The book should be able to help you with that... Start with the gesture drawings. That's what the book tries to teach you:

1. Have an idea, draw the gesture, just a stick figure will do
2. Think about the balance and weight of the figure
3. Forms, and landmarks, this is basically the first time you should worry about anatomy.

Until you feel comfortable with these steps, repeat them. And still try to have fun with it. It's ardous at first but will pay off.

The whole other stuff in the book, the detailed anatomy descriptions and all are for later... try to think in interesting gestures and forms first. If you seperate the chapters like that it's not as overwhelming.

I hope this helps you.

Ofc you are supposed to stick to the book and try things out a bit, if things don't turn out right, use references, but this is all far from "Just draw"

It feels like you're letting the small details take control of the general shape of the arm. Meaning you construct the arm muscle by muscle like a Lego. What you should be doing instead is define the space that the arm will be occupying and its general shape. This will prevent the clumpiness and size inconsistencies that you currently get.
This goes for every body part not only the arms.

Hey anon sorry that your post got a little lost, but I got you!
Critique:
- I appreciate the attempt at construction but it needs a lot of work
- I harp on this a lot, but newbies, myself included, need to work on line confidence. I mean look at the left thigh. It pinches towards the dick and has a ton of lines everywhere instead of a constant flow.
- Your hands need more definition... but man hands are hard lol
- You cheated bro. Where da feet?
- YOU MISSED ZYZZ TATTOOS
- You symbol draw a lot, the face the feet the legs

How to Study:
- Check out dynamic sketching by Peter Han on YouTube and do those exercises whenever you can.
- You desperately need to do some gestures. Go find a gesture generator on bing and draw like 10 pages of gestures
- You symbol draw. You don't draw what things actually look like just what you think the look like. Read the first couple chapters of Keys to Drawing by Dodson or Drawing on the Right side of the Brain. Personally Dodson was more accessible for me.
- Read Loomis head and hands (see beginner books). Do 3 pages of heads
- Don't draw on lined paper

I also like this, nicely done. Really good composition. It is kinda busy but that nice negative space feels refreshing on your eyes I agree. As far as lone work I agree with that other anon work on your line control but don't sacrifice too much of that loose feeling you have here (it's nice). Some spots your line work looks pretty good and other not so much (i.e. the steps in the lower right hand foreground feel really good).
Something else, I did notice a small issue with the perspective in the middle ground with the the structure on the left and the step in front of it. Since the you made everything lead your eye to the foreground even though it was a small mistake it was really noticeable. I really like this piece, has a good feel to it. Keep up the good work.
