He's basically just making tutorials, but masked as an ironic "roast" of other artists, when it's really just a style comparison (fine art vs. animation, etc.)

If he really wants to get personal, he could've brought up the kangaroo incident or any other proko's actual pitfalls. This is just preschool level of roasting compared to any Proko threads on /ic/.

Literally the most common critique you'll see here is "needs more fundies" or "LOOMIS".
They are the basics you need to hone for drawing humans, besides below /beg/ shit like (simple) perspective and drawing boxes.
You just gotta know what you want with your skills to find out what you need to focus your studies on. As in: animation, comics, concept design, or fetish porn.
There are countless western-anime-styled above-the-thigh 3/4 cute girl drawings without backgrounds, so don't expect much from that field though.

Just like rendering, your workfocus goes from blocking in and defining shapes to smaller and smaller details, start practicing smaller pieces of anatomy. I'm assuming if your focus is gesture and not anime bullshit, your goals are realism or stylized realism. Perhaps start practicing muscle groups and skeletal anatomy. Understanding how these overlap and the shapes they make underneath skin is a good thing to be good at.

google search "ctrl paint". Free guides to the basics of rendering.

Your first year or so of rendering digitally should be spent entirely using hard round. Anything you want to paint can be done with hard round. Textured/shaped brushes aren't something that will help you. They're useful for people who are already skilled renderers to achieve certain aesthetics quicker. You're not at the point you need to worry about that yet if you're just getting into digital painting.

(i wish someone had told me this when I started)

I would say "yes". I don't because I don't like to do anything in my bed that isn't sleeping. I might scribble something quick if I need to get an idea out before bed. Generally the marks I make in that position are shit because I can't use my shoulder to draw so that's the biggest drawback in a bed/sitting up in bed.

Depends on how well versed you are in perspective in the first place.
If you are just starting out, Perspective Made Easy by Ernest R. Norling. After this book you can either move on to:
A) How to Draw by Scott Robertson
or B) Peter Han's Dynamic Sketching course
You will have to do both of them anyway, which route to pick doesn't really matter.

The books are available in the artbook OP (link in my previous post) as well, but here's some links if they don't work. You can get the other books that you mentioned there as well.

hmm not sure whether i understand what you're asking. i'd say, start with an "exaggarated" curve and add details later? and look for negative space/enclosed shapes in these details ? also how you hatch/shade has a great influence on how the form is perceived. if something is curvy, dont use straight lines to shade it, try curved lines.

Here there's a 50 50 chance the person is right, or a retard, but that's the beauty of it. You are forced to evaluate every statement on its own, and think about it. If someone tells you your lines are messy and you should make it smoother, look at your lines, are they? How do they compare to other artists, do you want to make it smoother? In general you have the cartoon milf and the japanese anime/manga girl, you clearly choose the cartoon milf so go to look western references, is all about make the hips wide and do those triangle basic shapes in the torso, all the others things don't really matter, ah and focus on the expression.

copy but copy basic shapes, then build with that, you can replicate almost all cartoons and massive media characters by learning basic shapes, because they were made using them, from mario to mlp or adventure time. Because it's been out and easily downloadble for a while. After that, it's a modern take on figure drawing construction. Really helpful for one method of learning volumes of the body. Huston's book is better imo but that didn't come out until 2016 while Hampton's book was out in 2010. It gets you part of the way there but his gesture isn't great and he completely invents anatomical shape.

21st century art books tend to be better for learning and beginners. It's very difficult to self-teach yourself based only on solely Loomis/Vilppu so Hampton and the like are good alternatives to get you working with 3D forms instead of all your work being flat, drunk mannekins.

you can do all of that with hard/soft round or blur/smudge tool. learn the fucking basics of digital painting. your color choices and composition will matter more than rendering skills that you can learn in 5 minutes.

I really don't like hustons book. It's so bare bones and he did everything on a tablet which he is clearly not as experienced in so it loses his mastery of traditional and becomes an intermediate digital drawing.
His videos are much better.
Hamptons book is excellent for what it aims to do: get you to understand gesture, structure and anatomy in an abstract and easily memorable way. I can understand where muscles/landmark bones are on a model and I know what the 3d shape of them is.
Hamptons videos are actually pretty crap because he doesn't add anything more to the book really.

Both are missing a lot and of all subjects, figure drawing is the one where you need to read and watch every book and video to get a balanced education on it.

Everyone gets told to "go away and draw/study more" so we should just have more observation/reference copying study threads like the Anime Study General or the FZD Just Draw ones from a while back; With an emphasis on accuracy, construction, memory drawing, and less goalpost moving/impossible standards/nitpicking critique so that people will post/draw more. It would get people actively working on all of the "how do I X?" problems and learning proper studying techniques. That'll lead to consistent growth, motivation to draw, and the actually useful classroom-like support of seeing how other's tackle their studies instead of just half-assed critiques on original work.

Most study threads are bad because people are studying poorly, afraid to post since everything becomes a "ridiculous standards vs. (You)" battle, or they just post non-studies. If there was more encouragement for posting quantities of quality studies over posting original work with critique begging, then the momentum would build and /ic/ would certainly get better.

It's what a lot of people here are yearning for.

I can see some of your things but I think it's the best beginner book for learning to draw and figure drawing. I agree that you should devour everything you can but I think Hampton leads to more questions than it solves if it's the first thing people pick up. I did like some things while drawing through Hampton but think it gets things completely wrong/misleading volumes that aren't representative of even a simplification of what's there.

My ideal course for someone learning would be some order of the first few chapters of Vilppu's manual until the specific body parts, Scott Eaton's anatomy lectures, Steve Huston's book (lectures optional), and then Hampton now that you know the actual anatomy. Then you can work through Bridgman, Loomis, Vanderpoel, Hogarth, etc. It's hard because most artists won't need that level of anatomy or even want it. And figure drawing has circular dependencies of anatomy and fundamental skills like perspective and proportions that people are trying to learn.

For a beginner, I think Huston's book is better. If you've already drawn for a bit maybe Hampton's is better to start with. It's hard for me to say because I've only learned to draw as an adult while knowing about the books, I don't know what the natural way an artist learns to draw who scribbles without learning resources.

What is the term for when light gets more saturated near the terminator line? I'm pretty sure it's just sub-surface scattering but for some reason I'm convinced there's another name for that specifically. Maybe even just specifically on skin.

Am I just being a brainlet?

>> No.4290683

>>4290655
Subsurface scattering (SSS), also known as subsurface light transport (SSLT),[1] is a mechanism of light transport in which light that penetrates the surface of a translucent object is scattered by interacting with the material and exits the surface at a different point. The light will generally penetrate the surface and be reflected a number of times at irregular angles inside the material before passing back out of the material at a different angle than it would have had if it had been reflected directly off the surface. Subsurface scattering is important for realistic 3D computer graphics, being necessary for the rendering of materials such as marble, skin, leaves, wax and milk. If subsurface scattering is not implemented, the material may look unnatural, like plastic or metal.
