Can I get some help? I keep making the mistake of getting into a drawing I want to finish without seriously studying construction and anatomy, the only thing I've spent time with is perspective and that's something most drawing programs do for me. I ordered a big sketchpad and some charcoal pencils so I can actually do some traditional drawing since digital is probably teaching me bad habits. I've read Hamptons Figure drawing book but haven't actually applied it past basic construction, which even then I fuck up pretty hard. I just want some pointers for this one and some advice as to how I should study anatomy going forward. Any help?

I made the mistake of hanging around coomer artists who never bothered to critique my art past design choices, so I haven't been able to get a good perspective of where I'm at, so hearing this is a good thing. I want to get better but I think that I'm holding myself back by not posting my shit to places that aren't discords with aforementioned friends.

Try just studying one piece of the body at once. Hands one week, legs the next. Rudimentary to learn the muscle and skeletal structure, remember to break it down into basic shapes or just lines. Looks very stiff and flat.
You drew the cheeckbone but forgot about the brow ridge.
The head proportions are a bit off.
The mouth looks weird. If you look at the muscle (orbicularis oris), it should be more portruding and is kind of barrel shaped from right below the nose to just above the chin.
Really your biggest issue is symbol drawing and not thinking in terms of 3d placements.

If you've just started out it isn't too bad, but try to copy from reference before trying to do stuff from imagination.

The design is pretty good. Although a few criticism. The nose bridge should be more narrow to assume the curve towards the brow ridge more accurately. Also the boobs is not very accurate. It looks like it's pushed to the side judging by the shadow from the plates and the stretching of the patterns. The shading makes her arms look like cardboard. Give more impression of a curve. Be braver with the shadows. Darker and bigger.

Good job for a start most of the positioning of the face parts is fine although I would move the mouth up slightly. The nose looks a bit unnatural, noses are hard I would suggest you either study them or make it less detailed. I would also study lips a bit too just to get the basic form less artificial. The stars on teh arm are flat and straight, this is generally a bad rule of thumb, the are is a cylinder meaning a round surface there are very few angle occasions where are round surface appears perfectly straight. In fact I would suggest no using completely straight line in general when you know the object is not flat.

Use your light sources more, I can see a highlight on the nose and the eye but nowhere else. If you pay attention on your light sources on that you will make your picture look better overall. I skipped higflight on the boobs and the chainmail but that needs one too since metal is a reflective material.

Keep it up Anon!

>> No.4270279

>>4270264
Like the commenter above said, it lacks hard edges. watch ctrl+paint video about edge control. it's good that you can blend well and achieve smooth surfaces, but it won't do if you don't have some hard edges to contrast them and bring out the form. hair needs a lot of work in earlier stages - start with good sketch first that will separate the hair strands and just focus on the 3d form. add values and colors only after finishing that step. lastly, this looks like a colored greyscale drawing. i know this is a controversial topic but i personally dont recommend this technique especially for beginners, it doesnt allow you to learn about color in relation to light correctly.

>>4270276
i would suggest refraining from using references like this - "selfie" type of reference is very skewed perspective wise and you can tell someone used a selfie as a ref very easily. so thats just a little bit of advice. other than that it looks ok, besides the fact that you treat hair and clothes as one big splotch of darkest value (unless its intended). the ear looks good especially to me, in overall its really good that you refrain from using black values on the skin.

Rectilinear Perspective (aka 3-point perspective): The projection of an image onto a FLAT PLANE of a FIXED SIZE that is a CERTAIN DISTANCE away from the object being rendered. This is the most common, and arguably the most technically correct type of perspective when drawing on paper or rendering 3D objects onto a screen like in games or movies. The phrase 3-point perspective is actually a misnomer. In any given scene, there are as many vanishing points as there are lines. I urge everyone reading this to abolish the terms "X-point perspectives" in their minds in regards to this perspective. Easy to draw in, and looks good.

Curvilinear Perspective: Like rectilinear but instead projected onto a CURVED SURFACE (like the back of your eyeball). This perspective is what the human eye sees in, and our brains fool us into thinking we see rectilinear. Drawing a curvilinear scene onto a flat sheet of paper is not a technically correct rendering of the scene onto the image plane, but creates an astounding effect and should be used often if the artist can understand it. Hard to draw in, looks very exaggerated.

Isometric Perspective: The projection of an image onto a FLAT PLANE of INFINITE SIZE and INFINITE DISTANCE from the objects being rendered. All parallel lines and object sizes are preserved in isometric perspective. Objects do not recede away from the camera. There is still foreshortening on rotated objects. This perspective is incredibly useful for technical drawings and for learning some of the math behind image projections. Do not write off this perspective as useless. It is usually easiest to learn this perspective first, but be wary of getting stuck on it. As you get very far away from objects in rectilinear or curvilinear perspective, their perspective distortions diminish and begin to look like isometric. Object that are light years away viewed through a very powerful telescope would look isometric. Very easy to draw in, looks flat.

>> No.4270314

>>4270311
Take my writeup with a grain of salt, I'm not an expert, just an enthusiast trying to understand these as well. There are also infinitely many types of projection systems (and very few of them produce interesting images), it just seems that the only ones we really focus on as humans are the ones we see ourselves.

Its easy to spot colored greyscale, mainly because theres no real change in hues between shade and light (i mean, i see you attempted it, but its very very slight - this needs confidence; go from cold in shadow to warm in light or opposite). dont worry, with time you will see its easily recognizable as well, you just need to traing your eyes and make them used to analyzing color. Look at picrel, theres a very drastic change in hues between light and shade.

You have a beautifully touch when it comes to rendering soft edges I also like the pattern you used on the hair.

You put an obvious rim light coming from the rest to light up the face, yet this light source is not showing on the nose or the mouth. It would help to put it on everywhere else to give the face more form. The right eyes is somewhat far to the left and a bit misaligned compared to the nose but I didn't want to re-render it completely because it otherwise looks good.

As >>4270279 and >>4270276 mentioned adding some more hard edges can make it more lively just adding gaps and loos strands to the hair, a more defined mouth line, eyelashes or and iris. Similarly how did the rendering on the cloth which also looks really well done.

I hope you post more!

imo these kinds of exercises are only good if you can identify what's wrong from drawing to drawing, like ellipse exercises, or loomis heads, or whatever, and then iterate and try to fix it in the next drawing.

this is just a simple gesture to represent the head when figure drawing, it's too abstract and simple for this kind of exercise. I think you're just staying in your comfort zone and not actually improving at anything like this.

When you draw a figure its important to determine how the figure is balanced you do this by determining how the weight is distributed. Those lines aren't always visible on the figure but drawing them anyway when drawing the gesture helps.

So with practicing gestures how should I go about it? I was thinking about for quicker sketches just trying to capture the motion and for the longer ones I should try to build forms around them. For the more experienced artists in this thread could you tell me what you did that led to significant progress? I want to avoid just drawing to draw instead of drawing to improve, but to be honest I don't know what drawing to improve is besides correcting your mistakes (And looking at what I am capable of now, there are a lot of mistakes).

Thats how its typically done. You first capture the action of the figure and if you have more time you keep on adding to it.

I read a good amount of Hampton and started gesture drawing not too long ago and sucked when I began but definitely improved with time. I’m not amazing at gesture right now but what helped me personally improve was adding lines of asymmetry in certain areas such as the arms and certain parts of the body (lines where they lead into one another to show movement). Drawing a circle for the pelvis and a shape for the rib cage (kind of a semicircle, just look it up on his YouTube or something) then it really gave the gestures more humane features. I say you should conduct them all in a similar fashion and look at this for help as that’s what I’m doing as well as reading his book.

Update on this, did about 3 hours of gesture drawing today and I have already seen improvement. When I got bored drawing the same thing over and over I started to really pay attention to the forms of whatever I drew. I am slowly starting to understand what fits where and how certain parts influence each other. This made me really excited! Hi I tend to draw flat line drawings with not a ton of room for perspective or values, but I want to get better as an artist overall.

Is there any good way to transition my skills drawing like this creating more complete and life-like images? Or do I just kinda start from scratch with the figure drawings?

Thanks for any advice.

It's not exactly Loomis, but more like an abstraction of it. When I draw anime stuff, I imagine the Loomis head, then once I have the forms turned in perspective looking the way I want it in my head, I put down the stylized translation of it on paper. I'm symbol drawing, but I'm making entirely new symbols with each new head position. Everything is skewed so its structure is strong enough to look right. Maybe I'm developing bad habits but that's how I do it.

Honestly no your work has not gone to waste. You can keep that style as long as you want but just add figure drawing on top, you don’t have to necessarily stop. It’s also okay to try some linear portraits alone like the one shown and to just make other scenes and characters. I like your style though and I think that if you learn some figure along with what you already have with the face then you’re set.

People place emphasis on followers because they think it's a way of making a decent buck through psuedo internet charity and actual comissions. I think people assume it's a middle ground between having full autonomy over the work you create but making no money, and working at a studio cranking out work other people tell you to create.

If you have a genuine curiosity for figuring out how things work, learning the mechanics of the human form, and understanding how the eye and mind perceive visual images, you'll learn how to be a good draftsman. If figuring out how to tell a compelling narrative, put together a great composition, and convey thought provoking ideas using images, you'll be a great visual artist. If you happen to do all that using subject matter that appeals to a wide audience, you'll be popular and get followers.

Followers help you make money and get jobs, at least that's what people assume. What they don't do is help you get joy out of the work you do, or make you a good artist. Other people give you titles, but you're the one who makes yourself deserve those titles.

Been practicing for like 4 days now.
Still bad, doing exercises from the drawing on the right side of the brain book.

I know I'm weak when it comes to being able to control my pencil (motor skills disorder) but it should be fine with enough practice.

Where would I be able to get some "quick wins" in properly drawing things to be proportionate?
I've been thinking to maybe start with the details, and then to leave the outlines out so I don't mess up so much, but the idea is scary to me.
Should my drawings be less detailed with shadows etc. so I can iterate quicker? I feel like the true form does not "pop" out until it's shaded.

Why are male fingers sausages? And the nails are always so small? I've always found this hilarious.
Okay so to get the proportions right you really just have to learn how to observe. There are a few things to look for. Picrel is a list of these from Keys to Drawing. Practice until you can use all of them at the same time, this requires multitasking. Dont start with details, go from bigger to smaller. Its more important to get the right form now, you can grind detail and texture later.
As for making the drawing pop - you dont need shading, proper control of line weight will do that for you. Feng explains that pretty well here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22XYoenU-0c its a long video but its very very helpful and i recommend you watch it. Style is just a way of seeing stuff. A cartoon artists sees everything as more "intense", so if someone is fat, they will draw them super round and chubby to accentuate the look. So its not something completely detached from reality, just a lense you look through. And because of that you need to focus on construction of course. I dont think you need to become davinci before attempting stylization, but proper construction is definitely the common denominator for all good art.
Dont make so many scratchy lines. Force yourself to draw as few lines as possible. Rely on your sense of dynamism. If you see a curved line, make it more curvy.
One more thing about constructing - you dont need to go all boxes and spheres on it, but once you make the contour of face for example, make the marks implicating the 3d form so that you know its a 3d form and not a flat shape. picrel the cross on her face.

The drawings gained more form (=they look more 3dimensional), thats good. The lines are also way less scratchy, thats also great. Now try to work on your measurements more. This will ensure you get the proportions right. Refer to my other comment for that -> >>4272033 While you're at it, because you're attempting cartoon/heavy stylization, take look at the picture i posted here >>4272098 its very important, you can look up many videos about line of action. Its the reason so many disney characters looks so flowy and dynamic.
I see you're just beginning so dont worry, this is already some progress, keep drawing. I recommend you look at some disney reference sheets.

>>4272203
This is not a very good reference (low quality - can you figure out the shape of fingers in the shadow?) but lets try
1. Always think about the perspective first. Do you see the whole object from above or below? Do you see the sides of the elements, or just the tops, bottoms? Which part is facing us and which side is turning away from us?
2. Does the form resemble boxes or spheres more? Is it organic/flowing or hard/sharp?
Try to answer before moving to the next part.

Answers:
1. We see the hand from above. We see the tops and sides of the fingers + top of the palm. The fingers are facing ("pointing" at us). So the fingers are closer to us - they are bigger - and the wrist is smaller.
2. The form resembles boxes and cones. It's not very flowy.
deconstruction in picrel
IMPORTANT: Im not sayin you need to draw a bunch of boxes to draw a hand. This is a deconstruction meant just for studying perspective, forms, etc.

Yeah I'd definitely focus on the overall form first. Of course you can add facial features or sketch the hands roughly right from the beginning, but dont go into unimportant detail like hair, clothing folds etc until you figure out the whole figure because you need to know the perspective first. Every detail needs to "submit" to that perspective. I dont like giving advice like "dont do B until you're done with A", with drawing its better to follow your instinct, but beginners tend to get too focused on scribbling some unimportant detail while the rest of the figure is completely wrong, thats what Im trying to say here. So if you want to draw the face, draw it. Just keep an eye on your clock and if you notice you've been drawing hands for last 15 minutes but there's no legs in sight, its time to draw them.
I think you should work with larger canvas or zoom in more, give your arm more movement space. Your tablet size doesnt matter. And please remember to limit the number of your lines, this is especially important in cartoons where lines need to be flowy and exaggarated. Again, more moving space will help with that. Your figures are also pretty stiff right now. Check picrel, i remember it helped me a lot when i used to draw stiff, "puffy" figures.

I uploaded MDJ's video about values and edge control today, maybe youll find it helpful. https://mega.nz/#!1ZUEDIgJ!UwY5KIYMD2kUrH0B8vIGoutZNZzksQqdSdNYljfMtII

There's very little variation of values within your surfaces and. It's good that you refrain from using pure black and keep values mostly consistent with the light source (except the legs in the back) - big plus - but dont be afraid to expand your value range and use everything within that range. Especially the creature's head has very little value. The folds look pretty good for now.
Also remember, the closer an object is to the cast shadow, the darker the shadow is and its edge is hard. It gets lighter and softer around the edges when we move away from the object.

>>4272520
Rather than looking for pictures with a high contrast, you should be looking for pictures with a very clear value pattern - light, shadow, core shadow, reflected light. So the drawing on your left probably wasnt based on a good reference. The next 2 drawings look better reference wise, but you definitely need to learn about core shadow/reflected light. croquis cafe has good refs https://onairvideo.com/ also here;s some advice from kangaroo man http://www.stanprokopenko.com/blog/2009/04/choose-good-photo-reference/

Thank you, i will download the video and check it out.

I will keep in mind to have more range of values for the same surface. I have no idea of how light works with brighter spots without going out of the value range of the surface, for me it always looks "wrong" as there is different value really close to it (like you did), but then it looks flat.
i had the light coming from the back/right, and not directly from the side, i will try to simplify the position next time to make it easier to use those things and block what goes where better too, i didn't this time.
I will make more notes using yours as reference.
Thanks!

What made me stop doubting was reading a clear book on perspective, Cassange's Guide to the ABC of Drawing: and a week later I drew the interior of a kitchen with stove, chair, table and window
>in their places and on their legs whereas before it had seemed to me that getting depth and the right perspective into a drawing was witchcraft or pure change
- Vincent Van Gogh, in a letter to his brother, Theo who had suggested that Vincent become a painter. Letter 184, p.331

Whelp anons I think im going back to the keys to drawing. I never read it and went right to loomis instead. I dont draw symbolism but my life drawings are so based in perspective and construction I just need a reset. I mean it cant hurt to go back to that while style working on figures and anaotmy right.

Based wholesome Van Gogh. It was probably /beg/ tier, but he felt good and now he draws every single day.

You gotta put the weight down dude, draw a straight line from the torso that has the weight shifted towards it, then another straight line expressing the pelvis, then a straight line down to the ground and draw the foot, repeat on the other side with less weight. I'm a believer in protportions are in the eye of the beholder, but I think your thigh length is too short, if you like the long leg look I would make the thighs a bit longer

I definitely agree, the anon could use their mind's eye for those things. Look at the arm, visualize the arm in a relaxed position on the figure, it will almost be dragging on the ground like a gorilla, I think your problem came from a lack of understanding on the forearm and wrist.

Any feedback appreciated. I've started doing this thing where I stop paying attention my ref and try to just eye things. It's fun but obviously leads to shittier pics and is harder

not too bad, but you're bullshitting a lot of those contour lines. i know it's tempting to half-ass it since it takes time but they're worthless/counter-productive if they're that off. either take the time to do them right or do less of them (and do them right)

Well, I kinda wanted something "easy" to draw to get a bit more used to working on a tablet. Didn't really think much about focusing on what to learn from it. So my approach probably wasn't the best...

Use a ref, or figure out a better way to get good gesture/foundation. Look how stiff and unbalanced that is man, come on I onow you don't think that's acceptable

try drawing them instead, or shoving the shapes into eachother in a 3d program to get a feel for them.
