Right now your picture seems like you are thinking in a too "flat sense". Think about where your point of view would be.
Personally I like to work in the sense I have illustrated over your image. To use lines to block it off.

Also its very barren. Adding in just simple shapes like poles (like I have done) can give a more sense of the landscape.
Don't be afraid of your lines, that is often what will make a work come to life. Right now you seem to want to replicate what happens digitally and everything becomes a bit sterile.

Dad says it reminds him of Corot. It's deceptively simple, it took a lot of work, the paint is built up over layers and layers. The globe of the sun is pleasingly solid. The cloud formation took ages, at one point I thought it was finished, I had to go back to it. It is a small high quality oil painting.

Are you working from a photo? The problem will be there that the values get compressed, if your source really shows a barn that dark then you need to consider how you can vary the information you put down. Also, atmospheric perspective states those background trees MUST be lighter and less saturated than everything in front. This is if you want to follow the rules of realism, of course.

Anyone here use dip pens? I'm considering buying one and some ink. Been using fineliners but the idea of getting line variation appeals to me and they're pretty cheap. What do you think about dip pens? I considered a fountain pen but seems it's harder to find waterproof ink that doesn't jam it up and they're more expensive.

>> No.4274757

>>4274728
I like dip pens more than fineliners, it's cheaper and they handle abuse better.
Takes some time getting used to and it's a bit of a hassle compared to fineliners but you get a lot more control over your lines and I think the end result looks more "organic" because of that.
Also, make sure to clean the crown every time you are done, they last a lot longer that way, especially if you use heavily pigmented archival quality inks.
Try it, experiment a bit.

I dunno man, I'm no expert.
Try different nibs, different sizes handle differently which can make it more or less enjoyable.
I always keep an old rag and some water when drawing with dip pens so I can clean it. I also don't throw the used water out cause after a while it becomes really dark and I can use a brush for light shading which is a nice way to recycle the ink. And keeping the nib clean makes the ink flow better.

Just try it and don't be put off by the first stroke you put down.

-Keep damp tissue or towel handy and wipe pen between every dip
-Always pull pen, don't push. Can scratch a little to sides if careful
-Use fresh ink, pour a little in a container for use and then when it starts to get old (will get thick and be nightmare to draw with) pour it in a bigger one, refill the small container with new ink, use the old ink in big container only for experimenting and e.g. inking with brush
-Dip pen up to holes, draw a line on scrap paper to get off excess ink that otherwise would fall while drawing. You will occasionally spill at first, don't worry about it
-Work left to right to not smudge your shit when it's still drying
-When done for the day take old toothbrush and brush your nib clean under water, it'll last longer and work better
-Practice applying pressure going thin to thick and vice versa, line weight is important. If pressing hard with full ink load you will spill. Also hatching, look up nib pen art. Your shoulder is your friend

Do you draw with pencils first when using a dip pen? What kind of stuff do you draw?

Yea will last longer if covered. Ink supply lasts years if not in contact with air, container advice is for when you pour ink from big bottle that you bought to last. Can thin ink with added water. Also there is different kinds of ink of course, I use india ink which is waterproof but there's many water soluble brands like pilot ink that draw smoother and can use for ink wash, but of course will smudge with any moisture.

I draw pencil sketches first of course, I'm not very skilled, I draw knights and shit. Picrel is a study I did. Color is watercolor so that's why the waterproof ink. I use G-nibs, nice and flexible, ordered them online pretty cheap but shipping was expensive so got a bunch of stuff all at once. I also work with brush dipped in ink, I like water brushes for both ink and watercolor. Experiment a lot. Happy inking

Been practicing watercolor and I'm slowly starting to enjoy it. This painting was after a drawing I made at a figure drawing session. I'm trying to get a grip on color and temperature, I could've pushed the values more but I'd rather paint it again than overwork it.
It's practice, if I get a good enough grip on watercolor and can paint without fidgeting too much I want to take my painting gear to life figure drawing next time and paint from life.

tried an experimental palette of burnt umber, teal, and vermillion... tried to see if I could replace yellow with a dark brown. Relatively happy with the results, but it's a very finesse heavy palette because to get the "yellow" you have to thin down the brown directly on the canvas (And it's more orange than yellow). Gonna try it on a figure painting eventually.

I find it really hard to make out what exactly I'm looking at.
Now I can see it's supposed to be a landscape but the lack of depth makes it hard to find a sense of space.
Was this done from life or reference or something? I'd love to see what it was based off if that is the case.

a bit late to the conversation, but I genuinely enjoy using acrylics if I use a medium with them (I frequent gloss gel mediums and a retardant)

I'm a student so not professional by any means but I was able to achieve this only with cheap acrylics and medium over about a week.

Don't hate the tools for your lack of skill in using them.

unrelated to that discussion, here's a couple little gouache pieces from yesterday. First one was a study from gurney's color and light and the second was an exercise in edge lighting

not a fan of the second one for a multitude of reasons

No, you don't need to. It'll thin the paint but won't make it dry faster. If you're impatient, try something like galkyd, my layers dry in a day or two. Your pigments and which oils they're mixed with in the tube matter too.
