IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

from last thread

i want to improve.

i dont know how to draw anything. i find myself being a slave to reference, to the point it feels like tracing. I cant break away.

i think an artist should be able to draw basic things without reference, but I cant even draw the body. the torso and hips are the biggest issues i have, among the many many others.

Alot of things I draw is asymmetrical and lopsided.

i can post some examples of my art if it helps

Here is my advice, obviously being able to draw from imagination is your main goal, That’ll a hard skill to obtain which branches off into other smaller skills or requirements : Drawing from life, good proportions, good form and gesture, Anatomy knowledge, and Perspective.
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t practice drawing from imagination, no you should do it from time to time, let’s say the weekends make them solely for imagination practice.
Now As for how to practice drawing from Imagination take my advice with grain of salt because I’m still working on it.
From what i have seen studying other artist works and their process. You need to have an understanding of the human range of motions, torso, legs, arms, hands etc... Also how to create more dynamic gesture, usually when we drawing from imagination we tend to make the figure Very stif.
Also you will need to simplify the human form to establish the figure idea at first before jumping into details ( Steve Huston book is great displaying this idea of gesture + structure)
And don’t just stick to studying from life, study other artist works and process. If there is something you don’t understand trace over it.

And at last Don’t study mindlessly, always think about what to do next and look for mistakes to fix.

Good luck

Personally, I think it's good for people just starting out to help them get used to the motions, but it can very easily become a crutch and should be extremely temporary. It's not inherently bad, but it can get in the way of progress if you let it.

>> No.4257477

Let me clarify. First i meant as studies not finished work. Second let’s say you trying to understand a certain pose foreshortened but you couldn’t get it right, it’s fine to trace over the form of it to understand what are you missing.
As you progress try to do this less and not depend on it entirely because you will need to train your eyes more for complex perspective.

well, that basically is what im doing. i make a box for the torso, and look for gesture between the spine and a leg, an arm w/e. its just that every time i do this the place i first put a pelvis box is always wrong. ofr with the girl in the lower sketch. i started with the triangle of the arm leg and back, and sketched the breasts in, and made sort of a round box for the torso where the traps and clavicle outlined the top plane. but when i actually drew in the arm, it was WAY too long, so then i had to drop the arm lower and cover the breasts, and then not i dont know how to draw the upper chest because in the actually photo that was covered. idk, i feel like im skipping steps by trying to do gesture. i feel like i should be learning each body part and how they're connected first.

I was to rigid in trying to draw these pieces in their exact perspective rather then focusing on creating a fluid whole without worrying about the exact shapes and measurements.

That's a tricky questions because it's going to depend on your exact definitions personally I would say that I don't actively think about each line in terms of its starting and ending point and rather it's become a fairly natural progress where I 'just do it". The exception there being if you really want to make one clean line for the sake of your final linework.

I don't think I've ever followed any steps, that's probably why I screw up so much and struggle with basic stuff like hands.
When I joined /ic/ I've read the sticky, then for a couple weeks practiced drawing some references of people, trying to grasp the form/shapes. I have some PSDs with dozen of ugly layers with each one being a different picture or pose. Finished about 3 of these per day and would doodle some ugly stuff from imagination once in a while. I've read loomis and bridgman, but just half of it and never did any of the exercises from loomis, just some from brig.
Next I tried to copy some of my favorite artists. I kept screwing some stuff like the shape of the eyes and face, so I tried to trace a couple of them so I could understand the linework, shape, etc.
I """"trained"""" halftones by looking at some pictures and trying to copy them with my limited resources. I just use a tone brush I've created on sai but it's easier to use clip paint studio for that since it's what all professional artists use nowadays, plus you can do some cool stuff like gradient halftones.
One of the things that helped me the most with halftones was tracing one of poju's drawings, then I tried to replicate the toning (or whatever he did)

But tl;dr, I just go maximum turd polishing at whatever shit I draw so it eventually looks better than something from /beg/, but I'm still /beg/ as fuck and I'm still going to be here for a long time. I also pose a doll to use as reference for the first few minutes of what I'm going to draw, it helps so at least I get the size of each limb right.
But I'm also shit at using references, so I need to draw the 95% of whats left, and that's the hardest part.

Hey man there are some inaccuracies try the block in method, it helps to think about it in simple terms of angle and lenght as opposed to preconceived notions of where things are supposed to be.
https://youtu.be/9BqD38TQGjo
https://youtu.be/x4Kb7ycp7OY
The form of the skull is turned to the left while the facial features are pointing directly at the viewer, they should be aligned. It's pretty common and again a problem of your brain having it's own notion of what should be there rather than what is actually there.
Your Values are pretty crappy, too much variation within value-groups and poor range. Clearly define your shapes and then fill them in with a single uniform value of the proper range.
Try to keep things simple, limit yourself to maybe 3 values. Practice that by trying to keep the pressure you put down on the paper even.

You can start with gesture and perspective any time, it helps having some understanding of form before you start gesture tho.
I'd suggest staying away from proko and start with someone else first as far as gesture is concerned, since I've seen a lot of beginners approach his gesture style as if it's just simplified contour drawing.

I started drawing seriously around 9 months ago, but took a break 6 months ago since I am a lazy fuck, but want to get back on track. I was mostly drawing bland bodies without faces as anatomy studies and rarely "full" drawing. I've also started studying colors just very recently and I can't still draw a face. The shadow should not just be a darkened version of the surface color, it should be the color of the fill light/ambient light of the environment.
Skin especially can have a huge range of colors when affected by lighting.
It looks like you started blending too early. Nail down a flat, basic shape of the shaded area first before trying to smooth it. Lighting is all about starting with huge shapes and getting detailed from there. You need to have an idea of where that light source is coming from and then just draw the terminator line where the light stops and shadow starts. You need to understand the form as well.
The simplest way to approach it is
>hard airbrush the large shape of the shadow
>this becomes a colored multiply layer (use the same color across the whole drawing. This won't work for all colors but it will get you 70% there)
>soften the line between light and dark with a mid tone, which will most often be slightly more saturated than either the light or dark areas

people don't care, trust me, mostly because people saw what the want to see, so if you have two accounts one for normie things and one for porn.. if people just want to see one they just don't gonna watch the other one, sound pretty stupid and obvious, but that's how it is. Because they are only random people that are not attach to you in any way.
The only exceptions are when you are pushing the two shits too hard, for example; if you want to go high level in porn, but you also want to get high level in normal market things, then if you are a shitty person, your followers will be as shitty as you so is gonna be a problem, but if not, then no ones cares, unless you draw really fucked up shit that scare the normal market, like underages or bizarre fetishes.

Even if you are that paranoid about the topic, then just make simple variations of your artstyle, normies can't tell the difference anyway. For example in the SFW shit just draw standard porportions people, and in the NSFW shit just draw thicc girls and massive melons and asses, things like that, or in one use an more classical way of painting, or sketchy in the lines, and in the other more like 2d anime with flat colors and shading, or in one just humans and in the other the same plus anthro, etc, etc

I figured out the "dont use darkened version of the skin color" thing earlier today lol, but yeah in retrospect it's way too muddy. Plus I did get ahead of my self with the blending/rendering. I originally wanted to make sure the hands and face didnt blend in too much early on but I should've saved that till later. I probably didn't in the first place cus the colors blending me bothered me somewhat but I did get carried away nonetheless.

Also just to be sure, you're referring to pic related (for the most part) in your greentext right? As for the multiply layer part, I'm using Krita which I'm somewhat new to, so I don't know entirely how different it is compared to Photoshop, if at all.
