Recently got a drawing screen to make improvement in every aspect a lot easier. I never colored my work (part reason why I got a screen) and haven't dared to try a lot of new things like doing clothing before. Can anyone point me towards anything related to painting/coloring? Basically what rage fag said but in a more reasonable demeanor. You can't hope to accurately draw something that you have not studied and you can't hope to properly study something without reference. >> No.4245196

the point is the self-criticism. The problem with a lot of begs is that they have a lot of ego in their minds, so their vision of the products they made are limited by the restrictions of their judgements. That's why you always see people who, although they say they try to "improve," always do the same, the worst cases is when they excuses that just build walls in their minds for improve, like "i draw the way i want" or "i draw at my own way" as excuses when they recive advice, or "that's my style", etc, etc.

So when you learn that drawing as all technique and form of learning, it has his peaks and falls, so you have to keep the discipline. You allways gonna feel like you don't understand something, but if you don't stop eventually you will overcome that, to just encounter the same feelings again in the next level, is a never ending route so if you control your ego and put your mind clear it will be all fine

Anytime his entire body is off the ground, I'd think gravity would be trying to pull him down. Plus, it just isn't really "animated". It isn't exaggerated or bombastic, it's just really static and boring. Honestly, I am going to shit out a run cycle quick just to see if I can do it better, give me like 20 minutes.

Unrelated pic is a bunch of Ice Climbers I drew. Fucking love Ice Climbers.

Any advice on capturing likeness?
What I've noticed is that incredibly subtle changes in key areas of the face can make a painting look like a completely different person. So far the only way I've been able to get close is by tweaking those little details again and again until it sorta looks right.
But there's gotta be a method to it, right? Some kinda insight on how human process faces or something. Or is it literally just "practice until it becomes intuitive"?

Symbol drawing: the picture. You need to practice more with drawing what you see instead of what you think you see. Do the upside down study that's explained in the sticky. You can do it with the chair man picture or with something you find interesting online. Do it with a grid or without. I will say the grid makes training your eye a lot faster, but once you're comfortable with grids you need to immediately stop using them.

Also be more confident in your lines. Draw more sketchy and then clean up the stray edges and shit if that's what you need to make a straight line or the right kind of curve.

When you can draw what you see accurately, study anatomy and forms more. What does a skull look like? What shapes do the muscles and fat deposits add? Where does the eyeball sit? Is the Iris convex or concave inside of the eyeball? Do studies to find out how these things are out together. Learn proportions.

It's a good effort you've made but you've got a long hard journey ahead of you. Good luck.

When you say "same woman" are you referring to the body type? Because whenever I draw a lady I try to follow pic related as a reference. It's from a book an anon recommended I read awhile back. I assume once I am able to draw this in different poses I'll be able to stylize or exaggerate any way I want.

>I'd like to be able to draw pinups. Not really looking to make a career out of it at the moment but that would be cool too.
Okay that's cool, was just curious.

When I say "same woman" I mean that you should try to draw different body types, because it looks like you're just following the same formula for each of your drawing.
While it's good to have a certain way of doing stuff, so you can speed up the process of drawing, it does make your drawings a bit boring after a while.
I've seen your drawings in these threads for a few weeks now and everytime I see one it just looks more boring because in the end there isn't really that much different.
I like that you started to experiment with different poses, but try to treat each drawing as a completely seperate thing instead of just doing the same thing over and over again.
Maybe mix up the perspective a bit to get a different viewing angle or something.

Mostly just practice, try doing a lot of gesture drawings of hands and study the anatomy.
You can ofcourse construct the entire hand out of boxes but in my own experience that ends up making them look very stiff if you don't really understand the underlying anatomy.

You lack the basic theory behind pencil drawing, even though you have some eye for contours.

I can't be arsed to explain whole thing but basically everything you see in pencil drawing is a change in tonality, while you rely on very soft contour lines. A part of drawing where there is no tone at all is reserved to highlights. Right now most of this guys face is seemingly in blindingly strong light radiating from 360 degrees around him so you can start by applying a background tone and toning the major shapes (pic related) before going in to the details.

it's good that you're studying from references, but try to view the body as a set of block and circles, divide it into simpler shapes. it'll make it easier for you to copy the body parts more accurately.

You have the internet validating character design as creative/talented to thank for this kind of shit.
Character designers is what happens when kids born in the 90s grow up playing video games with shit character customisation and watching badly drawn cartoons and the only way they had to connect to something or some one was to pretend like their shit imagined OC would have a place in some else's recognised universe. Some of these kids actually learnt to draw because they were introduced to the prospect and motivated to actually make something unique once they realised colouring in traced drawings wasn't actually talented or creative, but people with the major autism or people who completely lack capability or willingness to practice never grow out of that phase of finding childish OC shit a good way to hope someone pays attention to your insignificant imagination.

>> No.4247693

>>4247686
'Just draw' Isn't bad advice one you take this into consideration; once you understand that many of these people don't actually 'draw' from anything worth while, but actually just try to copy some one else or imitate or slightly edit an existing person's art.
'Just draw' should be look at a real life object, or in desperate times, a photograph, and actually learn how to use your eyes to observe the visuals of a place or object and interpret that by using creative mediums. If you looked at a vase and drew that same vase everyday, you would get better at drawing that same vase. But never looking at something or observing something and trying to use your autist left brain to imagine something your brain isn't even equipped to imagine to begin with, you end up with shit like this, you will never improve.

So maybe the saying shouldn't just be 'just draw' but in fact, 'just look, then just draw'.

The ear is in the wrong place and that circle on the side of the head isn't going to do your proportions any favours. The ear shouldn't be further back than where the jaw ends. Put your finger on your ear, now move down. Feel the end of your jaw bone? that's not what the drawing looks like.

You've got big circle going on here with the head, but the relation to the circle and the jaw mimics to dimensions of a face from the side, this guy is forwards titled off. You need to remagine the dimensions of the head and neck and ear to actually fit a human head that is facing that direction.

Lots of people are good at art but don't practice like an artist. You will get better by simply drawing and painting more, but shifting up the process to match that more of a creative worker can help to make the process faster and more productive.
If you only work from your phone, you may lack a visual portfolio or collection of art to ponder on. You may glare at your individual images on your phone for a long time, seeking to find what could be improved or inspire the next thing. But really, on a holistic level, reflecting on your art works a whole lot better if you can make use of space and organise your images in a creative way that re-introduces you to what you're seeing in different ways. This is what you may be lacking by doing all your art on your phone. You can try:
-creating an online portfolio or sketch book
-actually making physical copies of work and arranging them on a pinboard/A1 pieces of paper.

This is where you can start to change up your process a bit. You don't always have to paint something new to make 'new work'. Change sizes of your other drawings. Try painting over them, editing them, get the scalpel out and collage shit, blow stuff up, make it huge and see how that effects your feelings and impulses towards the images.

Take notes, have a diary, tell yourself in your own way the thoughts that you have while your trying to process your work. A lot of creative thoughts that have huge potential will get lost forever if you don't record them, you can't rely on yourself to remember them long enough to take them to a finished painting.
This is the shit that they will teach you in some art classes. Having a tutor can seriously help, but you can possibly learn to do a lot of this stuff on your own. The only downfall is not having the commentary of other artists and the inspiration and reflection that comes from sharing your art with others and seeing what others are doing. That alone can make a huge difference in your process.

Also, contextualise your artistic process. Find other art work that inspires you or find relatable. Or, find art that is historical relevant or modernly relevant. Reflect on why those artists made that art or how they made that art and see if you can relate your thoughts about their process to your own process. Adapt your process based on what other successful artists are doing or have done. 'reinvent' where the successful have even failed, or recontextualize what others have done to fit a new purpose or audience. Like how vivienne westwood took a renaissance painting and turned it into a corset.
Try to develop an iconography. When you've made massive amounts of work, try to observe identifying factors through out your work. What makes what you do recognisable as you? This will help you stay grounded when the art you make starts to feel foreign for you and become creative blocked about certain pieces.

ngtmi is a meme while fundies are not. As I said, you need to work a lot on perspective and anatomy. Start with filling pages with boxes in 1point and 2point perspective. This might seem redundant but you cannot expect from yourself to draw something as complex as human body if you cannot draw a crate. Not going to lie to you, fundies are boring as fuck but the sooner you grind them the sooner you dont have to put up with that shit. Look up moderndayjames on youtube for tutorials on basics. For quick gains carry around sketchbook and draw from life whenever possible.
You need talent to become better than average concept artist but if you stop focusing on that you realise drawing is just a craft like any other and start having fun while becoming better at it.

i think you should break down your images and work on individual parts. im impressed that you are putting so much into each picture but your skill level is kind of low. so my advise is to make some sketches where you ust draw people but dont worry about shading. or just work on perspective, making basic shapes look believable in 3d. and also do pages of just different shading and hatching techniques. try all kinds of different patterns. work on gradients, on materials without putting them onto buildings or onto clothes. try to just draw fire, smoke, clouds, a waving flag, and nothing else. do studies of these things to improve your components and then put them together into a new drawing. think of it like a baseball player, rather than playing baseball to get good at baseball, he might consider running to improve his cardio, or weight lifting to balance out his muscles that he isnt using during a game. and he might go to a batting cage and just hit 100 balls a day instead of always playing a whole game. but again i find your ambition and creativity great.

You can always try it on paper first. It does carry over minus some digital kinks. Check your pressure settings and if you use the brush that can get thicker/thinner depending on them. Also check the stabilisation settings - they help to make less jiggly lines especially at first.

This is one of those things where it's hard to say if it's "Good" it's certainly its own thing but if you look for any semblance of basic humanoid anatomy for example there isn't much there. so I rate it a goodonyoufordoingyourownthinganon/10.

Thank you very much. I agree that I shouldn’t be labouring over finished pieces this early, but due to the circumstances of inktober I felt obliged.
I’ve moved on to the things you’ve suggested already, so thank you very much

Can I use rulers, triangles, and circle cutouts if I can't draw lines or circles? I have minor experience in drafting from high school and I'm thinking using tools would help a lot.

No.

Why not? I've been stuck there for a while and I'm not improving or learning anything, with tools I can skip it and go to anatomy and maybe learn something.

I used to be really bad at them too, now I can draw pretty good circles, etc. Just draw them more, try the Dynamics sketching excercises

Last time I posted work I apparently put it in 4k×whatever resolution and crashed someone's computer, but all you need to know is I filled half a sheet with shitty lines before getting frustrated and coming here again

Work smarter not harder

But you still need to work , at some point you will still need to "just draw lol"
