My frog piece managed to be pretty popular, which surprised me. I spent like a week and a half working on it and I expected no one to care about it, as that what usually happens when I put genuine effort into a piece lol

I started the year with under 300 followers and I'm almost at 1000 now, which feels a little nice. I don't stress too much about followers but it feels good that I've managed to find some following for my work without having to chase trends or fandoms, and to have people engage with my work because they actually enjoy my original ideas.

Pic related is my most 'liked' post of the year, at 292 likes over ~3850 followers (~7% engagement rate).

Engagement rates this year have been the lowest for me since I started. They're seemingly down for everyone across the board, especially ever since the wildly successful introduction of stories (people don't scroll through their feed as much) and different relevancy-based feed algorithms. My average engagement rate seemed to be around 2-4%, or around ~100-150 likes per post. Last year it was more around 4-6%. Past years was even higher, with less followers. Supposedly, the average engagement rate for artists is around 5-6%.

I also deleted several hundred "ghost followers" this year to try and boost engagement rates & therefore reach, including deleting(blocking) accounts which were obviously abandoned, and accounts that were clearly just mass following others using a bot follow4follow scheme. I think deleting ghost followers had a marginal benefit to engagement rates and the reach of my posts, but it seems pretty slim.

I firmly believe social media should be used with a particular goal in mind, and my goal was always to connect with and increase my visibility with art directors for places that my style is appropriate for. Getting likes and friendly comments is nice too, but increasing my visibility as a freelancer was always the most important. With decreasing social media engagement, it's just becoming more and more clear that there are other, most effective & time efficient ways to achieve this goal.

That's a good question that I feel is really important to reflect on - is all this worth it?

It's hard to say whether the "conversion rate" is good or bad. The occasional freelance opportunity definitely rolls in as a direct result of posting on IG (I often ask where they found me), but the amount of times that this happens is not nearly enough to sustain myself. I think social media works best (for me at least) in a more supplementary way rather than the primary way of self promotion.

Compared to cold calling (emailing), cold calling has been much, much more effective and time efficient. Social media is a passive means of self promotion - you're sitting around hoping to be discovered by the right person, at the right time with the right project. That leaves a lot up to luck, and I think it's generally a good practice to remove luck as much as you can from your business. Cold calling essentially takes away that element of chance from being 'discovered', since you're bringing your work directly to the art buyer for consideration for freelance projects. From there, it's a matter of whether or not you're a good fit for them, and whether or not they have work available. Doing this is obviously easier said than done, but it's a much more proactive means of self promotion that you at least have a little bit more control over, as opposed to a more passive means of self promotion.
