I missed the conversation, but, speaking of soul, like handwriting, a lot of an artist comes through their art. There's a separate conversation to be had about whether it, or anything, is greater than a sum of its parts, like consciousness, but there are mechanics to be broken down within it.
There is a huge difference between outcomes, depending on what an artist feels in doing a piece, and in relation to the overt intent.
Within an artist's body of work, it becomes apparent which pieces are strictly commercial vs felt(a musicians first hit album vs their second, backwards looking, step down). Instinctive(read coomer) vs higher order(read ideal-driven)- the difference between a consumable gift and a lasting one. Proud(self focused we'll say) vs humble, or self- disconcerned. Pushing limits of expectation too far vs just right. Reverent(intended to be agreeable) vs irreverent(a jab at something). Etc etc.
The character traits you adhere to determine what character traits you find appeal in others via their work. It seems a no brainer, but when you can properly line all of these up for yourself is when you knock it out of the park. Technique is only a coefficient of "soul." Which is why I say it matters- for your overall success, right down to each individual work- why you do something. Not that it should be conscious mind, rather "set it (right) and forget it.

So, the fact that Fighting Artist Challenge is labeled as explicit caught my attention, and so, I apologize for things not being clear.

The NSFW rating for a challenge is not the "maximum" NSFW rating permitted for submissions. It's a general guideline for the anticipated level of submissions. For instance, there's nothing wrong with submitting an explicit submission to a "Safe" challenge like InkTober 2019. Nothing's stopping you or preventing you from drawing pinups or porn in ink, the ink is the only prerequisite. Albeit, there are some exceptions, you probably don't want to submit anything Questionable/Explicit for a "design a children's picture book" challenge, or only sfw work to the "Dragon Dick Badge" challenge but these exceptions are far and few in between.

Here are some potential examples of challenges at each level:
Safe: General challenges. "Design 5 mecha!" "Environments Challenge"
Questionable: "Life Drawing Week" "Draw a Pinup Poster"
Explicit: "Furry Porn Challenge" "Hentai Challenge"

I did this; didn't learn much anatomy,

here's what you get out of it:
>15+ hours of straight drawing
>anything less than 8 hours will seem like child's play afterwards

I know it's not easy. I've frequently made 30 minutes on LAS because of just how much I hated my work.
The important thing is that it started a habit, and kept the flame of desire alive. I improved very little, admittedly, so at that time it wasn't about improvement. But had LAS not existed, I would've spent the rest of my life regretting not making that initial commitment, and my dreams and ambitions would die, the remnants of those desires eventually calcifying into a debilitating midlife to deathbed regret.
I know what it's like to start. It is traumatic to have a vivid vision of what you want to make, draw, and acknowledge that what you've done does not even come close to what you want. It hurts to feel to cover your work up in a life drawing session, ashamed of your relative ineptitude.
And pivoting to making pieces? For two years, I did nothing but unfocused studies. I could do them because i had no emotional connection to them. But whenever I tried to make what I've dreamed of making (fantasy stuff, dragons, world building), I felt physically ill at how badly I've tainted my vision with the horrid marks I had just made. I've actually vomited once in doing so.
But you must overcome these trials. I can't tell you how, but one day, you need to, and will flick that switch. It comes when you learn how to learn, and try to apply that knowledge, pushing yourself to really think about each mark you're making. Instead of dwelling on the end result, take solace in the fact that you've tried your best and taken a deliberate step towards your goal. You go from not drawing, to drawing regularly, to a continuous habit of making things, experimenting, pushing your brain to visualize, mutate and understand to create the possible work you can, acquire critique, and move on with the same fervor, because in the end, there's something about this that you love, something you would not trade for anything else.

I know how you feel, first time I did life drawing I hid every drawing right away and left as soon as possible.
Now, I'm more confident. I realize I don't want to hide even the bad stuff because I could get some helpful critique. It's also nice when you get a compliment when you thought things went terrible and last time I went the model even wanted to take pictures of the drawings I made.
