Opinions on going over 3D models to begin a sketch?

Do you ever try to free hand it or you use a model 100% of the time?
I ask because I wonder if this is just cheating yourself out of learning to do it yourself

>> No.4232980

Do you want to get a drawing done?
Trace.

Do you want to learn how to draw?
Don't trace.

A thread died for this.

all is ok anon, thats not the point, the point is the time you take.
For someone who knows how to draw in a decent level, is a waste of time because in the time you spend striking the pose, you could done several fast sketches, if you are a really slow person then could work, also if you are one of those guys that can't """"visualize"""" things in their brains, otherwise is very not efficient.
Is different when you contrast it with high-level work, in which you can for example establish an environment, perspective and light direction to do a very complex work, in wich case is worth. But, if you are gonna strike a pose with 3d models to draw a random chick with a standard pose and nothing more, better learn to draw faster (or really learn to pose fast as fuck, it goes without saying that the 3d model have less dynamism, so depends of your market)

It doesn't matter what your process is - what matters is the end result. IMO, one of the hardest pills for people here to swallow is that no one really cares what you do. Most folks just want to see finished work. If they do care, then there's nothing they can do but whine and complain, which you should just ignore. As long as the final work is good, then trace away.

If you’re goal is to work completely from imagination, every single crutch is “cheating yourself”. If your goal is to just finish drawings without preference of methods employed, then you obviously don’t care.

I have made some of my best works using design doll figures or just the basic circle-line landmarks from said dolls and a couple of boxes to ground perspective. No rules, just tools.
As long as you still have some gesture and a bit of style, instead of making it feel like a traced mannequin, it's fine.

Pretty boring video so I skipped through much of it, but he seems to be saying basically is to do gesture drawing-type sketches over it, instead of what the op image was doing. That is a better way to make use of the models and to teach yourself I think

NTA but I do both for backgrounds. I trace models if they're available, and I do it from imagination if they're not available. I only do this when drawing comics, where my main goal is getting stuff done quickly rather than the "integrity" of the process.

Might be a good idea to blur the image of the 3D model, so you aren't compelled to just trace everything exactly. Which would make if feel like you just traced. You need that 2D appeal imo.

Throwing down basic 3d shapes is the easiest skill as an artist and the first one you develop
If you still can't do that a 3d model won't do you any good.

Only way I could see this being super useful is if you're at crunch time or need to focus on other things more.

I'd just prefer using 3D models as pose/perspective references than outright tracing them.
