I don't think so. Every collection I've found is missing some of the same books, and I've had a devil of a time tracking them down IRL - although having Half Price Books here in Texas certainly has helped. What doesn't help is the series' inconsistent numbering. At some point, the publishers renumbered them, so in one collection you could find a book that is different from the book with the same number in another collection.

Many are, some are not. For example, I have the special edition that goes over colouring your own artwork with Copics, and talks about using the Copic airbrush system. That book is useful to me. Old volumes about using screentones - and no, not digital screentones, actual screentone sheets - are less useful.

Most of the techniques are sound and would be applicable to understanding how to draw digitally, but the little "tips and tricks" are by and large aimed at traditional drawing with pencils, ink, and markers.

This is Gamest 125, but it's been scanned. However this paper looks more glossy than the scanned version. mgiht be scanner or settings preoducing differences? I noticed the Japanese scans tend to look dull while the western scans tend to look brighter.

yeah, unfortunately. archive is a total mess, and collections are the only way to have anything with any kind of organization. sad panda is a billion times more organized, and the democratic/voting system is way more flexible. On archive you better damn well hope someone gets the name and terms right otherwise you have to upload the whole thing over again to fix it.

and there's no collection for Japanese gameguides/artbooks that I'm aware of. Someone needs to make one.

I think the hierarchy should work like:

What format are you saving in? I'm going to run your scans through pngquant since 3.5mb for a mostly empty page is just bloat. I have it automated with adjustable quality settings already so it won't take long.

I scan everything into TIF files which I then convert into JPG.

That image was just a quality 10 JPG in Photoshop to get the filesize down for uploading. Usually I save as quality 12 (max) JPG for the final product, so the original filesize for that image was 6.5mb.

A quality 12 JPG is usually sufficient to provide a high quality image. But the file sizes aren't exactly small. So if you guys want to run the scans later through whatever, be my guest. :)

Doesn't work like that with retail PDFs m8. I know because I've opened hundreds of them in Photoshop. Some PDFs have the entire page as one image, some have a mix of various images and vector text on top of each other.

I was on the ground at a con with $40 burning a hole in my pocket, and I *knew* I had several of the other flashier (and more expensive) artbooks I could see at the booths around me in my stash already. This one I knew I did *not* have at the time, and as cool as the cover looks (and as good as the review on Amazon are), I too, am not a huge fan of the work inside. Soejima's got his own style, and it's pretty sexy, but I really prefer artists like Masamune Shirow and Satoshi Urushihara.

I kind of agree. If I bought an artbook from my favorite artist, I wouldn't expect prints of drawings I already know from Pixiv/Twitter/dA etc but unreleased sketches and unpublished works. If I bought a game artbook, I would expect concept art, not sprites you can see in-game. I've had this experience once and was very disappointed. Looking at that YouTube video, the book only scratches the surface as if they were afraid to show too much. Though there much be much more value in text, I obviously haven't read it. There are many more better behind the scenes artbooks.

I really recommend getting an ink e-reader if you can (especially since it's Cyber Monday). You can convert pdf to .cbz and then this format for various e-readers easily. There isn't much on an e-reader to distract you, browsers work very slow and no social media. I think I have 8GB storage on mine and I feel like I'll never run out of it, though I have dozens of art books, since after converting they take little space. They're really good for taking somewhere together with your sketchbook and supplies.

The online converters sites are shit, the limist is too low or the results suck.
I need them in jpgs to then zip them and change the filename to .cbz.

First you have to determine if your PDF is actually one-image-per-page or if it's a retail copy that has multiple images + text on a layer. If it's the latter, you can only guess what the resolution might be by looking at the DPI of the images on the page. If you drag the PDF onto Photoshop, it'll tell you whether it's a scanned copy (one image per page) or retail (multiple per page). From there you can convert to whatever with a batch.

Go for it. There's Japanese sites that have downloaded and posted any gudiebooks they find, and retro mags users have gone through looking for magazines. They find things now and then. A lot of the material is actually funny enough scanned by foreigners not Japanese. The hubs of scanning Japanese material seems to be China, and America mostly.

There's a lot of digitized private Japanese magazine/book collections sitting on people's HDD. But they dare not share it because of the copyright laws. Some of these are leaked through PD, but it's really a tiny fraction. If only we could get some people to part ways with a HDD or two we'd have a treasure-trove of books and save us from having to scan them too.

Here's a "cracked" version of PD. PD normally requires that you download a certain amount of "unity" to share with others before you can download or search, but this should let you set any GB amount you want. Just google "perfect dark tutorial" and "perfect dark nodes" for the rest. You'll probably need to forward your port too.
