You need to expand your horizons when it comes to composition. Different camera angles, more active poses. All of your work looks good but every piece I see is [fantasy character standing in the center with afterthought background]. You have the ability to paint characters. Now make them interact with each other and the environment.

The figure looks terribly amateur and its not just because of how you painted it. It looks like an action figure with all kinds of all-too noticeable anatomy and proportion flaws. (How the right arm connects to the torso, terrible hands, right thigh just looks like blobs of meat, etc.)

Honestly focus on getting a GOOD drawing with minimal flaws first before wasting your time turd polishing. If this is the type of art you want to create you MUST be practicing figure drawing.

The figure looks terribly amateur and its not just because of how you painted it. It looks like an action figure with all kinds of all-too noticeable anatomy and proportion flaws. (How the right arm connects to the torso is noticeably incorrect, ugly hands, right thigh just looks like blobs of meat, etc.) Perfect anatomy isn't everything (Frazetta's own figures had plenty of flaws), but these problems are too significant to ignore.

Honestly focus on taking your time working up a GOOD drawing with minimal flaws first before wasting your time trying to paint a weak drawing into something good, you do not have the knowledge to do that yet. If this is the type of art you want to create you MUST be practicing figure drawing first and foremost out of anything.

Ontop of how-tos like Bridgman or Hampton, draw more from models, focusing on capturing the figure as a whole and its actions instead of getting too lost in the details what muscles are what. Once you have an strong idea of how the body should look, you can simplify and IMPLY the small anatomical details instead of trying to make every muscle separation clearly defined and accurate.

The old masters did this all the time. Most effectively they would simplify all the complex forms of the body, but artists like Rubens would add all sorts of subtle lumps and bumps into his figures that aren't really representative of real muscles, but somehow they FEEL accurate to the eye because they are close enough to the truth of how they look. The point is perfect anatomy isn't as important as artisticly reflecting the the true characteristics of the figure.

Thank you, this is the best advice I've had in a long time. This was supposed to be an exercise in working imaginatively without relying on ref (I'm a total photocopier usually). You're totally correct, I spent barely any time on the drawing stage, and despite working from imagination, I killed all sense of the figure as a whole and ended up with disjointed lumps of "anatomy" - missing the forest for the trees. I did try to focus on motion, trying to keep the C curve through the body, but I suppose it was irrelevant when the body is so off-putting. I see what you are saying - that Rubens looks so right because it flows, it feels how you would see muscle without intimitly knowing its structure (intentional no doubt).

I have a long long way to go, I'm excited!

If you have time could you offer some critique on the painting method too? Just starting to learn about light and colour, using HueValueChroma.com

To put emphasis on the impression of how massive this pillar is, and also just a general rule of thumb, you should put the eye level (horizon) where the observer is supposed to be. Here I think it'd be fitting if you put the observer at the same level as the figure exploring the pillar, since you want the viewer to do the same.

I'm not sure what color to make the background and if it will change the lighting. I know in painting its really bad to have everything one tone like this (usually) on the left but that's how I was originally painting it, kind of like "the morning after" so everythings bright. Not really sure what to say... it looks good but I can tell you still need to practice getting that certain "professional" level of brushwork. This looks too airbrushy which is a halmark of an amateur. I think you need a better balance of soft brushwork contrasted with sharper, more opaque strokes especially in places like the eyes. Her right cheek area looks great, it's nice and sharp which contrasts the soft gradient of her cheek, but that's the only place you do it correctly i think.

top of her head/hair is completely in light, and you have too many terminator lines in your shadows for this early on, just make em a smooth gradation or something until you narrow in on the right value.

I think a few of your lights are bleeding into the darks, but I suspect thats just because your terminator shadows are way too contrasty and confusing me.

Always do your background tone first before anything else because values are 100% relative to the values around them. Doing your work on a blank background can make you match values to that instead and end up with your values looking too light or blown out.

Yes it does. You avoid overlapping and foreshortening, the pose are not well established in space and stiff. We can tell that you are not comfortable with anatomy.
The point was not to correct the pose because it's bad, you shouldn't care about making this final picture good anyway. The point is that right now if you had more figure drawing practice you would nail this poses without too much effort. Practicing posing only from imagination and a few references will only get you this far.
Going out of your comfort zone also means taking a look back at your strengths and weaknesses and try to study on what you need to improve. Right now all your stuff are sketchy characters with the same lighting and rendering. Bad poses and anatomy hidden under that one rendering you seem comfortable with.
Even if you feel like you found your style that you wanna pursue you should really practice different stuff; work on your lines, practice different rendering do some exercice with limited values...etc. Because all those different methods will make you progress way more on this specifics style you want to achieve than just trying over and over again.

Thanks for the feedback, I kinda tried to avoid the sakimichan-y airbrush look but I indeed don't know how brushwork works yet.

Sometimes it's like I had to choose between rendering fully realistic or putting some random sharp strokes to break the "soft" look.

Do you guys have some cool pictures with good brushwork that retains this realistic color style that I could look for as reference?

It's tough for me to say what you should do to improve, when I looked at your piece my exact thoughts were "this looks great, but still amateur" but what exactly is it that looks amateur? I'm not sure. I can just tell. I really think you are on a good path though, if this piece is any indication of your other painting endeavors. So it might sound frustrating to say, but just keep at it, keep doing what you're doing. I'm a firm believer that if you figure things out for yourself you'll learn better and faster in the long run.

Much better. My only gripe with this one is you aren't drawing what you see exactly. It might help to put a grid over the next one you do and just really be careful about your line placement and visual measuring. Try to get the angles and sizes of features right and when it looks right go in and clean up and refine that linework. Then try again without a grid.

I think some of the inaccuracies in your drawing may have tripped you up when you started blocking in values.

He has that flamboyant villain sephiroth/dio/griffith type of look to him.
Finish the hair out, clean up the rendering a bit, and maybe add some red to show sub surface scattering, and it should look great. it already thumbnails nicely.

Hey dude, afraid I went straight into colour. Would recommend doing value study. This study is pretty much unfinished it's around 35-40 minutes of work maybe 50 didn't time myself. I normally do 2 hours. To push it further I would work on the edges and make the lighting crisper. The colour work is simple with relatively few hue variations and texture placements, and a concentration on drop shadows and rim/side lighting building out most of the forms nicely.

I always challenged myself when I used to do studies by finding a reference that was strong in colour and lighting. Then I'd study in value first, then replicate the study in colour as opposed to painting over using a colour layer. I can honestly say it was the best study method I ever found and definitely made me improve a lot faster than the normal rate.

Highly recommend it if you are considering doing an art dive again.

Just remember you WILL get better. However, it's up to you how fast you want to improve. Study intelligently, focus and watch that shit pay dividends down the line.

Your art style looks horrible because there's no hierarchy to feature sizes. You've got big eyes, big noses, big ears, and big lips and they all look the same because you're not playing with size variability. Make some things big, some things medium sized, and some things small.
