heavily incorporating one thing you are studying (perspective, Anatomy etc) into one piece you are planning to finish, is a better way of studying fundamentals than just sketching exercises. Mainly due to 1.you are way more critical of a piece than sketches 2 a piece has way more intent behind it so you have more care for working on it and really a little more fun

What do you think?

x) doubt
in the time it takes to do one piece you could have had several practice sketches done. and all the mistakes you made along the way would be erased, to be forgotten and ready to be made again.

So making original art ontop of studying is better than just studying without making your own pieces. Obvious.

Did you have to make a thread for this?

What is a sketch to you? You should know what you’re trying to get out of what you’re studying/doing, if you need to work on gesture then you work on gesture, if you need to work on mannequins, then do mannequins, etc. Just because a piece isnt rendered doesn’t mean it’s not as finished as another piece. By spending all your time focused on rendering you’re neglecting time that should be spent where your efforts truly begin to fall apart. Don’t be sketchy (messy) for any of these steps, take time and care to do things right, and know where you need most improvements.

I can't bring myself to study for the sake of studying anymore. I tried it yesterday and it was bad, the motivation was just not there, my studies looked like trash. Not that the point of studying is to make good drawings, but still.
I study specific problems for a specific piece. But this creates blind spots over time. For example, hands give me trouble. I'll have to find time for them between finished pieces at some point.
Anyway, you get good at what you practice. If you practice croquis sketches and only croquis sketches, you'll be good at drawing croquis sketches, and not at anything else. If you never do croquis, you won't magically be able to do them just because you're competent in other areas. Target your weaknesses one by one, day by day, and trust your gut as much as you can, else you'll go crazy.

Studying anything is hard work. What'd you think it'd be? It's the results of hard work hard brings pleasure. Nothing in this life that is worth keeping comes easy Anons.

Do both, and sketch for fun with no intent in studying, or try to do a big piece without using refs, or mindlessly doodle for a second, you’ll be more well rounded as an artist

i just cant study for the sake of studying,i get more stuff done when i have a project in mind ,its much easier to put hours of work daily like that for my tism

...that's what study is always about. You study for a test. You study for work as an intern, or apprentice. You study your friends for the sake of relationship. There's always a goal.

Maybe you need to take some time to ask yourself what you want out of art in the first place and then figure out how to get there that way you're studying feels more worthwhile. Because studying without a purpose is pointless.

what would you refer to as art studying in specific?

Are you retarded? You find a subject that you want to study that will help you achieve your goal. Whether it be fundamentals, gesture, construction, color, etc, and then you read about it, and then you try it yourself, and then you compare it, and then you try again... I don't know what exactly you're asking me. But you just keep testing yourself on your knowledge until you get to a place you feel is satisfactory and then you move on to the next thing.

There's literally no better way to practice, and it's way more fun too. Faggots like >>4229977 have it all wrong, you can't just sketch all your life and expect to get better, you have to put your studies knowledge into practice.

I almost never do this, but the few times I do I really feel those gainz. I think it depends on the person, if you are a permasketcher then this is the way to go, if you are a deviantart kid going 100% finished everytime, then sketches are better.

Based Tehmeh.

If you only do study sketches you'll never know how to make a finished piece. Going all the way with your pieces and completing them is studying too. It's a whole process.

>start a piece
>do parts I know well
>leave things I need to work for the last unless its essential to do before something else
>open up new file where I do sketches and study the specific subject
>after some time I'm ready to incorporate it into the piece

Works every time. Project oriented studies are much more fun as you have an actual end goal.

I do this except the last part. By the time I looked at what I needed to learn I don't care about my original piece anymore and leave it undone. SometimesI even stop at the studying part.
