What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

Even though you only do sfw now I can't help but feel like the lewds-drawing mindset never really left you. Even though this is a character sheet it feels like every one of these drawings is made more to look sexy than anything else, rather than to show the character design. There's nothing wrong with having a sexy waifu oc, but I think you're kinda missing the point of a character sheet by only making it a set of poses that don't really show anything about her other than her ass.
Real character sheets usually have a simple turnaround, details on the clothes, notes on how the character is constructed, expressions, and etc. They're basically just references and show of the character's demeanor and personality.
I only say this because I don't know if you're aware of this, I know you don't like porn art any more but everything about your work screams that you drew a lot of it.

Are you trying to mash together some hybrid east/western style? Consider removing details that are brunt and instead add ambiguity and abstract forms that imply these same details. For example, instead of refining the form to describe the eye lids, the nose, the lips, and the chin eliminate these forms into finer subtle details that would do one of two things:
Provide a more pleasant, younger look
Compliment the style the character is originally from

Make comfortable shortcuts for common operations such as larger/smaller brush, undo/redo, lassoo, move selection, transform and opacity lock

Play around with different brushes and brush settings too. Pressure sensitivity etc

Depending on how you want to do rendering, look into how people use the paintbucket in a way that doesn't generate ugly aliasing close to your linework

Get a perfectly circular plastic object, place it on your tablet (if screen-less) and trace around the object. Copy and paste this layer so you have two drawn circles on top of each other and then turn the second circle 90 degrees with the transform tool. If they line up you know that your tablet drivers don't skew your input. When I was new I accidentally drew for months on a tablet where this setting was wrong (if you drew a circle on the tablet you would get an oval inside the software), really messed me up

I really like your shapes and the comp. Her body language is very emotive as well. Although I think a colder color palette would better help express somber mood, imo.
Try to give more consideration to the light and shadows. That current feathered shadow cheapens the illustration. Maybe consider a more dramatic overhead light source (like stages light for example)
That could cast her face in shadow. The light falling directly onto the pages of the open book would contrast rather nicely and even pride some bounce light onto her.

Be more considerate of your options with lighting and color to express emotions abstractly. Keep it up!

>>4220007
I enjoy this creative take on period fantasy. I only wish you'd add more setting elements to better ground your characters in, like some grass. or even a sky backdrop Having them float in a white void takes away from an otherwise interesting scene.

I don't hate you, anon. You have a lot of potential believe or not. I was only hard on you because I feel like you're too reluctant to break out of your comfort zone. This Asuka drawing has some anatomical issues, but I do like it better than the last one as it's at least more inline with her actual character. The legs in particular are the weakest point. The proportions are too skewed.
Her calves and feet are too tiny. Also her facial expression is too dead. She really isn't really expressing anything at all. What is she meant to be feeling or expressing? Be more mindful that the face serves a purpose beyond just being there.

I highly suggest you start doing more anatomy and nude studies. Become more familiar with the musculature and skeletal form, then learn to construct it. Everyone here would just suggest Loomis, but I suggest
-Anatomy For Sculptors
-Force by Micheal D. Mattesi
-MORPHO:Simplified Forms by Michel Lauricella
(most of them you can find in the art book thread)

Do this in tandem with studying Hideaki Anno's art for Eva (or who ever you want desu). His style is a distinct exaggeration so I only recommend doing this in tandem with studies of nude models as to not to become a carbon copy. You can do it!

Thank you. but I disagree, I think even more simplification on neck and clavicles would make that area appear much flatter relative to her head.

I do like the fact that area is eye catching, because it's also part of the image as her bust is the focus, not jest her face. Highlighting bone and musculature plays to the realism I'm leaning into.

I think that guy identified a real issue, but maybe didn't provide the right solution.

I think the problem is that the neck itself is too flat relative to the face and clavicle. The neck should probably have a larger shaded area on the left side to define the form and make it look less discontinuous. Also, I think the lines on the clavicle make it look like a deeper crease than is realistic

I can could see that. Although I think it's the shadow of her face that makes it seem like the neck itself it too flat. Although I the better solution is I could've made the shadow of her face cast over less of her right side to better balance the lighting. Thanks for the insight.
>Also, I think the lines on the clavicle make it look like a deeper crease than is realistic
You first crit does have a point, this one however, I disagree with. The line art of her clavicle hi-lights a bit of her bone structure, as she has a rather lean frame.

Oh that certainly is a good alternative for balancing the lighting, but since the lighting of her face was at odds with the lighting on the rest o her bust, I think it would've made more sense to reduce the shadows on her face lessen its intensity to better match the angle to the rest of her. As the lighting on her face was most at odds with the lighting on the rest her.

The bright lighting I was working from was more forward facing and suspended slightly above her. As opposed to the left of her, which would cast that sort of shadow. Looking back I should've been more mindful of that. I've been experimenting to find a balance for an animation style. Between realism and abstraction. Drawing from some of 90's era anime that captured a level of realism.
Like 90's era production IG or Madhouse to name a couple. I do admit it's been sort of challenging trying not to trap myself in creating a visual with clashing attributes in a purist to establish something that looks and animates cohesively. The abstraction of cell anime, but leaning into realism.

Thank you for the repaint, anon.

The main problem is that the lighting is not consistent. A lot of the high lights and shadows do not follow the same light source. You are also very timid with your shading, I feel as if you're afraid to put too many shadows on any area, which results in the form being less well-defined

You are sitting between two chairs.

You either go full fucking flat as on anime and it looks good because it's entirely intentionally flat.
Or you go full render like AS109

Right now you're in a weird spot kinda flat but flirting with soft shadows.

>> No.4223794

I like the way you painted the blood in a bright pink color, but it really draws the eye towards the bottom of the piece because the rest of the color palette is more muted and what a viewer would expect. If you don't want the floor between his feet to be the focal point, you need to have some bright, eye-catching color somewhere else in the picture.

Don't really have any issues with the expression, someone who regularily guts fish probably doesn't feel too sorry about it, most things become routine after a while. Might help if you could make it a bit more clear that he's looking down/at what he's doing.

If you want it to not look flat, shade it like a thing that's not flat, instead of like a flat thing. You've got the head shape implying the cheekbone and eye socket and stuff, but then you shade it like a perfectly cylindrical mask.

The shirt has two problems. One, you drew it flat, so it doesn't even face the way the neck and shoulder imply the body should be facing. It's head-on and symmetrical about the xx thing. But also, the creases in the shirt don't delineate any real shapes. They just look like weird indentations in a block of plasticine. Imagine you had to draw a grid of contour lines showing the 3d shape of the clothing folds. How would it look if you tried that now?

If you want to make it like movement then have her be a bit unbalanced shift the weight on one leg and have her swing that stick (?) on wider arc like she i putting all force in that hit. Also do not have look at the camera, make her look at what she is doing, that also helps conveying the idea that she is in the middle of something.

Brah, listen. If you are feeling down then just draw something for yourself you do not have to post everything here. If you post here then you are voluntarily inviting people to criticize you and that is the opposite that of making your feel better. It is fine to make mistakes, it is fine to make shitty artworks if you know that it is but you don't give a damn about it at that moment.

Anyways we can improve your picture by fixing the eye level of the face and reposition the parts of the face, the realign the shoulders and breasts to that angle to keep the perspective reasonably accurate.

Your "style" is not bad, just pay more attention to these basic ideas as you work if you want to post them. If you just want to scribble and stuff then go ahead and do it but don't post them.

Now get some rest okay?

You still have a lot to learn, but so long as you keep pushing forward and keep on trying to improve yourself towards your goals, you will make progress. I'm sure of it.
I kind of detect that you get more destructive critique than constructive critique around here, correct me if I'm wrong. I don't think that makes for a good learning environment. I'd recommend leaving /alt/ and maybe /ic/ altogether and finding a different group of artists to ask for crit from, I found the /las/ discord to be very helpful for getting thoughtful critique

I don't see the issue here, it's pretty normal for beginner artists to have someone they look up to and want to copy. Thing is, no one gets gud from one day to the other, so over time he's gonna find other artists he likes and incorporate elements of their styles into what he's doing. Most people end up with something of their own eventually through this process. Style is really not something that's worth stressing out about at the start, one way or another.

The shadow colors are too warm.

The main light source isn't supposed to be rim light. It's a beach setting so it's supposed to be originated from the sun directly overhead. I'll take the rest into account though thanks.
