It's a complicated answer. Mucha's posters were lithography, so often what we see now is the final result - a poster, not the original painting, if there even was an original painting - I'm not sure how the company he printed with created the metal plates to make these prints, but I'm fairly certain they weren't making photographic separations of a painting. I don't think I've ever seen the original paintings for any of his posters, so I'm inclined to think they were drawn directly onto the printing plates. Not sure, I haven't studied Mucha and his techniques that closely. Anyway - colors like that are more a result of printing inks and the vibrancy they could achieve, not paint.

This Koloman Moser guy is cool. Why have only now have I heard about him? His stuff seems way more influential to the Art Deco movement in America than all those other Art Nouveau artists the art history books memed into fame.

Everyone focuses on Mucha, but art nouveau had a lot of artists working in that genre - highly recommend diving deeper. I started with this book - great overall look at the whole era, including mucha. And, this book is really nice - great print quality, large format, the kind of book they just don't make anymore. It's long out of print, but I've seen it pop up used.

It's on my list of projects, to make an ebook out of it, because books like this shouldn't be forgotten.
