hey guys, I'm working on a paintover of an older piece to see what things I can fix and if I've made progress. There's still a couple things wrong/off with this pic, and I'm looking for any critique or tips. I know the lighting is off, and it'd be great to get input on that specifically. My dinosaur computer also gives me a hard time with the colors, I'd like to know for how many of you viewing the image if the colors seem alright or if they are too red or pink (my computer and tablet look okay, but on my phone it tends to be more red). I also have a feeling the upper body/ribcage is too long, but I don't know how badly fucked it is or if it's a mistake you can get away with haha. For that matter,at what point can you get away with mistakes? Is this pic okay enough to be fap worthy?

There’s something really offputting about this work. The body hair is done is a bad way, the anatomy is shoddy as hell. Do some basic studies until you understand essentials, it’s fine to have your own style but you only get to stylise once you know how the body works. Look at someone like incase for body hair that doesn’t look god awful, learn anatomy from actual humans. There’s a deviantart page called senshistock that has a lot of poses that you can trace, then redraw, then draw the anatomy in more detail.

Drawing highly stylized cartoony characters i fell into same face syndrome. When face is reduced to its most simple parts, eyes, nose, mouth, head shape etc. and there is no shading, it feels like there is a lot less room for diverse faces, especially when you are trying to keep them attractive and femine and in consistent style. I want my characters to look cute and nice, but i don't want it to be the same head with different hairstyle and sometimes thicker brows. I know there are many ways to draw cute, and there is more than one "attractive face" but even after doing research, trying to spice up face shapes, noses, proportions on the face, it all sooner or later falls back into same face. Advice? I drew from realism, both photo and life models but as i said: When it's time to draw cute girls in cartoony style again, they all look the same.

Get comfortable with different head shapes and different spacing of facial features. Try to draw someone with round eyes and a button nose, then someone with sharper features and a pointed up nose. I find that not having a clear idea of what a character /should/ look like leads to sameface. Head shape and jaw is important, cheeks, brows, lip fullness. Drawing from reality can definitely help with this but I’d also look at attractive art. Felix and Dmitri from fire emblem are both attractive but for different reasons. They’re consistent in style but they don’t look exactly the same

Only minor criticism would be the positioning of the eyes. The left eye is looking completely to the side while the right eye seems to be looking at the viewer. Still, keep it up and you'll improve over time.

Not very I'm afraid. No response from peepee. If you mean generic digital anime coloring you aren't succesful so far, these look more like photo studies. You need to simplify and soften the forms. Way too much modeling in the half tones look at Kyle's stuff for somewhat realistic anatomy with soft shading.

They are, in this instance I was using Pilot "Juice Up" 03. Its a gel pen, so if you are concern about clogging, might consider inking over light table. Alternatively, Sakura Micron 01 , Copic Multiliner 02 might provide similar line quality. Also, "Juice Up" are not re-usable type of pen and as far as I am aware you can't buy refill for them.

Well you don't necessarily have to work in greyscale and then add colour. It's just the problem with trying to jump straight into colour when you haven't completely mastered value ranges in b&w is that with b&w you only have two tones to consider. Black, and white. With colour you have an infinite level of information to try and harmonise into a functioning work. It's just not feasible at your level, so you have to go back. That being said, don't consider b&w illustrations as being in any way lesser. Look at Incase's work for example. He creates a lot of b&w illustrations, and in many ways they're actually more erotic than they would be if they were colour.

If you're really intent on using colour though, try rendering in b&w and then masking colour to the top. There's an artist called Toxxy (pic) who does some really great work using this exact technique. They posted a rudimentary little tutorial for it a while back that I'll share after this post.

Yeah that was kind of something I wanted to mention but I'm too gentle. I think there's some leeway that can be afforded here though because, obviously, whilst it would be better for them to go back and study anatomy, shape and form from the ground up, you can learn a degree of anatomical knowledge through studying basic values, but you can't learn values whilst studying basic anatomy.

The entire point.
The artist knows what they want their desired effect to be.
This might be more along the lines of what you're saying though: the general morphic shape of 'Herc' is off, the the torso appears somewhat 'insect' like. His feet are pretty awkward too, like not really strong foundation for the act he's trying to preform. This could be remedied by adding more to the environment. Also maybe something about the womens' muscles doesn't transcribe to the way shes being contorted. It's especially weird along her abdominal area. Her stomach is swollen? Is this from semen lol?
Good job on the expression though. Like the dude is crazed and monstrous, but I can read his intention, and the look on the womens face is incredibly sexual, like I can feel her emotions and it's very hot.
That feels like your strongest suite here, your ability to convey expression. You should consider focusing more on telling stories with faces then try moving your work around that.

Look man, I get it. Nobody likes being told they're bad at something, especially when it's something they enjoy. I take criticism hard too, some nights it haunts me, and I would get where you're coming from if they told you you were a steaming pile of shit and to go rope, but they didn't. Anatomy and gesture "IS" exactly what you need, but you're not willing to see that because you're getting yourself worked up over the fact that they said you were bad, and because of that you're missing the point entirely.

I was devastated and I ended up not drawing for years, but that hiatus was a really humbling experience for me, and it encouraged me to buckle down and really take my studies seriously. Not so I could come back and be hot shit, but so I could learn to stop taking myself seriously and roll with the punches.

You say you've been studying art formally for two years, it looks like either have a bad tutor, or you're not internalising any of your lessons. What kind of exercises did you practice? Which books have you studied from? Bridgman? Loomis? Hogarth?

And so tell me yourself then, if you were an outsider looking in, giving your own perspective on your work, which aspects would you psoitively critique, and be honest.

Definitely still attend the life drawing lessons though btw, they're invaluable you can never learn too much from those if you properly apply yourself.

You think it's not fun because it's hard work and you don't understand that hard work now means reward later. Grinding orbs and boxes is not fun, but what you can go on to create with those orbs and boxes is extremely rewarding. That's the fun part. Not the endless grinding but what you ultimately learn because of it. Is it really fun coming to /ic/ and getting slammed? It might seem like a really exclusive boys club when you are relatively new to /ic/ or art in general. The truth is there’s not that much to teach someone in terms of art, you can only point them in the direction of resources they need to utilise. I first posted on /ic/ about 3 years ago, and like most other people I thought I was hot shit. I ended up getting redlined by bbc and it made me realise the extremely lack of knowledge that I had. People fall into using certain buzzwords because of the nature of this board, symbol drawing is one that can be difficult to understand and process, visual library too. It really is just hard work, studies, practice. That’s what makes you better. I’m still far from the level I’d like to be at but I’ve improved a lot in the last few years. The pieces I’m most proud of are almost always me reaching to experiment with something new. Once I consistently reach that level the old piece I was proud of suddenly doesn’t look so good. Stick to it if you’re serious, or keep going at your current rate. It’s all up to you

There’s some exaggerated anatomy and the faces are very iffy but otherwise it’s good. Bodies have decent weight to them, poses aren’t dull and lifeless. Really, what’s the problem you see with this on a fundamental level?

Do you struggle with drawing any body part in particular? For me it's the obliques/the transition from the ribs all the way down to the hips. It's an extremely subtle thing that's hard to get right

Here's been my experience with Hentai Foundry.
Posted three images, they all got accepted.
Posted another. Got rejected for not meeting quality standards. The quality was no different to the three which got accepted.
Did some digging on the forum and found that the person who rejected my drawing has a tendency to do this for no apparent reason.
Resubmitted. Got rejected by a different person this time for being more than 1600px. My drawings which got accepted were way above this pixel count.
Resized and resubmitted. Got rejected again by the first guy, despite taking the advise of the second.
