Murata probably puts 10+ hours into creating pages, drafting storyboards, meeting with editors, etc. every single day and has been doing that for 20+ years.

The big thing with most mangaka (with very few noteworthy exceptions like Muira) is that you need to have quantity before quality to actually 'make it' in that industry. The same is universally true throughout the entirety of the publishing industry. You need to be able to produce in quantity, with quality usually being an afterthought/the work of good editors. Murata is a phenomenon because he maintains relatively high quality alongside quantity in his illustrations. It's a tremendous amount of work to become and stay as good as he's done. Anyone who says he's overrated/not that good has no business talking about art in terms of productivity and output, mainly because those things are not determined by any one person, but by the speed of the industry itself which is always faster than the sum of its parts.

As for Murata being on another level compared to most mangakas, that is simply untrue. Murata's style has broad appeal and is, from a technical point of view, superior to a lot of work, sure. However, Murata is not also responsible for writing his mangas. He is an illustrator who may occasionally change something through suggestion within a storyboard, but he is not responsible for writing stories. This separates him from most mangaka, as most others are responsible for writing their stories while juggling their art.

The most painful lesson to learn in life is that in order to achieve greatness at any one thing it will always come at the expense of another of your ambitions and desires. There isn't enough time to do everything.

Murata actually mostly does characters in OPM. In the first few volumes he did do most of the work, and I think somewhere in the middle he was without an assistant so he ended up having a lot of speed lines/empty backgrounds for a few chapters. But yeah, Murata definitely has help. He actually does/has done a few other projects while working on OPM.

to me his art is good but what is truly insane is the speed at which he does his work, which I'm actually sure is not that far from the average among mangakas. I've watched his streams and I was in disbelief how quickly he would complete a 2 page spread with at least a dozen different characters, all while keeping an exceptional level of line quality and detail.
