What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

I'm might come off like a crab, but I'm going to be honest here. The artist in OP's pic related is petty decent art by their own merit, but this is the 3rd fucking time in a row the selected OP image is from the same artist. There is a very obvious bias going on in these threads now, and it's dragging the quality down. Stop dick riding and paying favorites.

There's less and less and less focus on posters that display objective admirable skill and unique creative voices. And more and more favoritism for posters who draw cute shit. There's a certain irony that comes from seeing posters show the most favor to artists that make the same type of art and same derivative subject matter, in a fucking ALTERNATIVE/ STYLIZATION thread.

If you're going to make the thread, at least make an effort to showcase OTHER artists that typically don't get into the thumbnail. I'm noticing a trend in these threads for the several past months now. Posters who draw 'cute' art are being shown favor or given more feedback on average more so than any type of work that gets posted in the threads now. /alt/ threads used to have a healthy amount of posters with unique art styles and with more creative subjects. Now it's mostly cute anime girl posts that get a 'BLAHG?' response. What's the fucking point then?

You would be extremely disingenuous if you think posters in these threads don't get positive reinforcement from seeing their work in the OP thumbnail. Spread the love.

A standard idea well executed always trumps a creative idea poorly executed.

And t b h, I'm not even seeing any of the latter either in these threads, just poor ideas poorly executed.
There's only one work posted in the last thread, that is both "creative" (well, only if your define creativity as "not a cute girl") and well executed, but I suppose his work doesn't work well for a thumbnail.

I'm merely suggesting to try widening your scope and being able to see artistic merit in other posters, even if they're not drawing cute or anime girls. There's dozens of posters in these threads yet the posters that get the thumbnail treatment is like 3-4.
>but I suppose his work doesn't work well for a thumbnail.
that doesn't even fucking matter, and you know it. The entire point of selecting a post from previous thread isn't based around whether or not it makes a good thumbnail, it's based around "hey, this is my favorite post, it's so cute". That alone sets a certain precedent, which reinforces certain expectations of the type of art that gets (You)'s or what is more likely to gets asked for a blog. It's not a literal carbon copy of anything character design. That poster's style is drawing inspiration from that era animation which is largely forgotten is more alternative and unusual than 90% of the original work that gets posted on this board. Which is the ENTIRE point of /alt/ threads.

I disagree. That poster has one of the more unique art styles in these threads. It's obvious the focus wasn't to design the most outlandish swords like a fucking JRPG weeb on coke, he's just rendering grounded weapons in his style. Which leads to some visually appealing results, imo.

I feel your stylization is a bit odd as you try to mix a more realistic style with anime graphic appeal, but don't quite emphasize either aspect, leaving you in an odd space. I feel that's where the "unappealing" factor many anons talk about comes from, you're kind of falling in an uncanny valley face. Rather than taking realism and stylizing it you're taking very graphic anime faces and rendering them more realistically. I think studying realism some more would be beneficial to you right now.

The past 4 OP, except for that skateboard girl, deserves OP. They're all well executed and designed. Can it be argued that the first two in your list deserves OP too? Sure. Is the rest of your list except for the first two any more creative than OP? Not really.

Yes, there has been a short uptick of Orenji in the OP, but to say this is the norm is disingenuous. Just look a few weeks back and you'll see a cute furry comic, an environment drawing, playful robotic TVheads, a chrome battle armor and a whole host of variety of subjects.
I'll continue to address your concerns regarding "variety" down below

>False
>>4186554

>It's not a literal carbon copy
It literally is. I actually do find it charming, but does it have more artistic merit than a carbon copy of a Japanese anime style? Not really.
It's not an innovative move either, it's definitely Cuphead that is the real culprit for bringing a resurgence of interest to this style to the mainstream.

>is such a nonsensical pejorative
Not any more meaningful than "anime girl". We are discussing about creativity and uniqueness, so I'd say it's relevant.

>I disagree
Is it kinda cute? Sure. Is the design more creative than most of the posters in the thread? Again, not really.

You're confusing your personal preferences with objective artistic merit.
You are simply listing off art from different genres of subjects and styles without regards to their actual merit within that genre. This is an important point.

I myself do fancy a healthy variety of actually unconventional styles that actually looks good, but this is not the way to go about things.

I'd say that we could have a rule that disallows featuring an artist more than once or twice a month. It's a fairer compromise.
IIRC, DAD threads featured an unspoken rule where the OP can't be made by the same artist of the last thread. I wouldn't have a problem seeing something like that implemented here.

What the hell does "anime graphic appeal" even mean? Anime is a SUB GENRE of animation. It's Japanese animation specifically. Anime serves an an umbrella to so many unique art styles, many of which do actually mix realism with stylization. So I'm not even sure what you're saying here. Pic VERY related.

There is nothing "odd" about Whitebox's approach. He's a very capable artist imo with good drawing skills, although I'm not a fan of his rendering at times.

I said "anime graphic appeal" because he was using a very graphic anime style of drawing eyes, I'd compare the style of drawing eyes to something like this. Eyes like this do not make sense if you try to draw them realistically and extremely detailed, because they are meant to be viewed as graphic shapes.
There are plenty of ways to draw anime in a more realistic, less graphic approach, You posted many good examples of those styles. The point I am essentially trying to get at is that he is slapping anime eyes on a more realistically styled face, rather than taking realistic eyes and finding a way to incorporate a more anime style into them

>It literally is. I actually do find it charming, but does it have more artistic merit than a carbon copy of a Japanese anime style? Not really.
A carbon copy implies he looked at something already done and literally recreated it detail for detail. Is his art reminiscent of that style or era of animation? Yes? Is the aesthetic entirely original? No. That isn't and was never my argument to begin with, so I'm don't see what you're driving at. Not only is he designing his won characters, he's pretty much the only poster in these threads (or even this entire board) that draws in that old school style. His work has a lot of charm, so maybe he ought have some recognition, at least maybe once for fuck's sake.

The fact that any one artist is given recognition repeated times when so many other posters with equally if not more creative art in these threads haven't gotten the same privilege not even so much as once is a fucking shame. Which just makes it more apparent that 'cute' or sexy anime girl art is what is the most likely to be given recognition. More variety would be nice, that's literally all I'm arguing for. Because the entire premise of these threads is alternative art styles.
>It's not an innovative move either, it's definitely Cuphead that is the real culprit for bringing a resurgence of interest to this style to the mainstream.

Thanks. I know what you mean, anon. The colors have looked off to me as well so I have been tweaking them. I wanted to keep everything faitly saturated since I felt destaurating the bg made it look too dreary, how does this look?

>>4190659
Could you elaborate on that, anon? To be honest That is an issue I have always struggled with, I want to have simple cartoony faces but I enjoy painting and I am not sure how to approach it without making the faces look too simple in comparison to the rest of the picture.

I hope you don't mind, but I gave painting over your drawing a shot.
Your style is nice, but like other anons, I feel like not rendering the face with such hard shadows would really help add some extra appeal. Try to use softer shadows and let colors bleed into each other a bit to make things feel softer. Also, in my opinion, try not to paint the skin so red, I noticed as I was painting that it feels a bit too crimson.
Good luck!

I like your design. My only concern is the spikey things on her head, they are not placed in the same position on opposite sides of the head. It's too far to her left ear. Kinda lopsided. Also the mouth. You drew a closed edges on both sides of the open mouth. Try replicating her mouth expression, and you'll see what I mean. I'd just erase those lines at the edge or draw them closer to her lips.

If you are who I think you are, I left the project due to differences in the direction you wanted and I was willing to do, both in subject matter and stylistically. Before I left, I refunded your pieces. If there is a cent left uncounted for, email me or contact me on Discord.

Yes, this happens and more frequently, and to various artists. Sometimes a client does not want a lewd on these servers.

This is probably a dumb question but is there anything on shape language that anyone can recommend? I'm trying to make a villainous character for a game but other than "Just do triangles bro" I'm not sure how to effectively convey that idea of a villain just through shapes alone. Thanks.

I did the sketch last month to work out something a little different. What I wanted to learn most was how manga artists did motion lines and how they used hatching to give the forms more depth and a sense of energy and presence.

During these studies, one thing I noted is that their hatchwork usually follows a straight, C-curve, or S-curve in a single direction to guide the eye.

The shadows right now are their as a visual guide. We'll see how the rest of the image goes.
