How many years did it take for you to realize that you have no talent for art? 15 years here. I bought supplies and practiced every day. Even though it was obvious I wasn't making progress equal to the amount of effort I was putting in, I still kept trying. Even though I have a strong desire to be an artist, drawing just never clicked for me. It hurts, but I have to face up to reality.

I'm on my 8th year of learning to draw and have still not made it. I am in a perpetual cycle of practicing and not doing portfolio pieces, so maybe that's why.

answer honestly OP: Do you enjoy drawing? Is drawing something you'd do just for pure pleasure and fun? More people need to realize that the most successful artists are those who genuinely love art and have a real passion for it. They think about it all day and literally breathe art. There's a reason there's a lot of medicore programmers and only a handful of really good ones, the former one force themselves into it for the money, and the best ones genuinely love coding and do it in their free time just for fun.

>> No.4184621

Sometimes I feel like I have no talent, and it's likely that it's the result of not practicing as intently as I should, but it doesn't really matter to me; I can get lost in drawing something for hours and when I'm not worrying about shit like that I end up enjoying myself the most.

I have no talent, but that's not necessarily the same thing as NGMI. You can build skill through hard work, even if you have no talent. I've improved a lot in the past year, I'm still confident I can reach my personal goals.

learn about reflected light and control your edges in cast shadows. you need to have both hard and soft edges. now all of your shadow edges are soft which causes your overall light/shadow pattern to look like a gradient. a quick vid on edge control -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEjKKiNjvBM also a vid on reflected light -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3WmrWUEIJo

your drawing is clean and neat which is very good. i like the contrast between the outline and shadows.

There's your biggest problem. Wanting to be something isn't the same as having love and passion for doing the thing it entails. Like others said above, those who find their way as artists aren't people who want to be artists, but people who want and need to make art. Skill level is completely irrelevant, if you suck at realistic drawing/painting then try every single medium you can until something clicks with your voice and vision. Some people make art with math and technology. It's not just about """"grinding fundies""""""

There is this very strong desire when you're young and inexperienced to just "want to get an art job" or something to feel validated as an artist. but once you experience the boot-licky necessity of being paid to paint for someone else the goal will change to just wanting to just fucking draw what you want to draw.

Skip the stage of seeking art as a job/commissions and just fucking draw what you want and get an unrelated part time job to pay the bills. If you actually like drawing that will be enough and you will eventually be good enough to make some money from your own personal work. If this doesn't even sound appealing to you you probably didn't even want to be an artist enough in the first place.

I have had fun, drawing has become more fun as I've improved, which took a lot of unfun moments to get to. Things like anatomy are really unfun at first, but when you get better at them and you can manipulate the forms, they become fun.

I wouldn't say that hes not studying hard enough, the study is very clean and nice. the problem is that he seems totally aimless. Sure if you just want to get "good at drawing" you can do anatomy studies all day and get better and better at drawing anatomy, but it's pointless, without a goal, an artist is nothing.

i think you're mistaking gratification for fun. Making a really good drawing your proud of is extremely gratifying because you feel that you have a valuable skill, or are developing a valuable skill. but if you are seriously drawing something cool for fun, it doesn't necessarily matter about that gratifying feeling because you're enjoying yourself in the moment.

nah, I don't think pros are exempt from crit at all, and your evaluation is valid. I just think this board needs to loosen up a bit and think beyond making stuff look correct and appealing.

for example, there's probably a reason that character is drawn with a blank dopey face, and it probably adds a lot to his story. Or not, idk, I don't like kikuchi's style either and I tend to flip past him when he's feature in kuš comics. draw whatever you want

your attitude that you squandered your childhood talent is probably holding you back. No one really starts getting good at art until they are like 18+ anyway because children are retarded and teenagers are egotistical and think everything they draw is hot shit.
