I'm not 100% sure about Kanji but I can write chinese, and the Chinese alphabet has some recurring graphic components that can sometimes (kinda) help you guess the meaning of the ideogram they make.

Like for exemple 语 (meaning language) has the radical for "speech" along with the graphic component meaning "mouth". Both the "speech" and "mouth" ideograms are easy to write and very common.

However, there is no real secret way to memorize everything, you have to grind.

I think what he means is your shading technique is pretty muddy. That mixed with the compactness of your art makes it hard for the eye to accept all the detail. Remember, our brains like to fill in the blanks. Perpetually self inserting.

Additionally, I'd work on your line weight. Either consistently thinner lines or a better line color. The red you chose is fine, because it makes the image pop, but against that vest it's pretty grinding visually.

Skill wise, work on studying hands and gestures. Your creatures are stiff and hands/arms the lowest skill from what I can see.
