**Don’t aimlessly study the fundamentals or anime. Learn the fundamentals (form, values, color, composition, etc.) through properly copying anime.**

How to study anime/get better at imagination drawing/obtain a style/etc.:
>Find an anime reference you like (an illustration, screenshot, anime figure, 3D model, etc.)
>Find learning material that will help you reconstruct your ref using simpler fundamental elements
>Trace the ref using that construction
>Copy the ref using that construction
>Draw the ref from memory that using construction
>Repeat the process for the same ref multiple times and mix in other refs
>After studying a lot of refs, drawing from your head will become easier

**Focus on Tracing/Copying/Memory drawing the big shapes/values/elements first then later worry about the finer details. Focus on only a portion of a complex ref first then move on to studying the full ref.**

General anime style discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Keep most of your personal works for /alt/ or the other critique threads. Here we should be drawing copies from good references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

It's a lot better, anon! Good job on that. Here's a few things I can still point out:

-The point of the chins are too forward, it should meet your guideline

-Your facial features are placed a bit too high, or are too spaced off each other.

-Your eyes have improved a lot, but the outlines don't look like they could contain the pupils.

Try to look into this tutorial -> https://ichi-up.net/2017/054 for the eyes. it's in japanese but the guide is easy to follow.

You've been drawing too many 3/4 head angles anon, every face in these except for the top left and bottom right are quite bad. Not to imply the remaining two are that good either.
On the other hand it's good how you're tackling angles other than the 3/4 face shit. get out of your comfort zone more often and you're setting yourself on a good path.

Not sure what you're trying to prove. Most old manga is a real hit-and-miss in terms of technical fidelity (though that applies to most manga these days too).

It's all about hard work and expanding your horizons, anon. In my opinion hard work comes first and then the will to experience and try out new things with an open mind. That's the traits I've noticed in people who are seriously good, and since I'm trying very hard to adapt it, I improve much faster. Fight with your comfort zone, be able to second-guess yourself, doubtful is good as long as it doesn't cripple you. Expect a lot from yourself. Severely limit the time spent on watching TV, playing games, social media etc. Don't be jealous of others' progress, realise it's because they worked harder and you can most probably catch up. People who started to draw in their 20s or so, spend like 8 hours a day to catch up to people who have been drawing since they were kids. Always be thankful for any advice, be humble and always look for mistakes and don't avoid things which are difficult for you. It's a lot about the mindset, with a wrong mindset, no amount of grinding will take you out of that stage which is above beginner but below professional, where many people (mostly YouTubers who are constantly praised) are stuck in for years. Try to enjoy drawing even if it seems like constant grind and try hard to keep your focus so you aren't drawing automatically. I still haven't made it, but since I changed my mindset and began to doubt my ways, I improved more in a year than I have in ~4 years. The truth is the great majority of artists are, or used to be "crabs", and leaving it behind is the first step to /gmi/, perhaps you are behind this step already anon. Then what's left is hard work and constantly analysing your mistakes, looking for new ways to do things, out of comfort zone. Good luck anon

you've already done gradient map, color balance, and now an overlay. those are the main steps. you have hardly any contrast in the greyscale so the gradient map would hardly help as the colors will all be from a small part of the spectrum. adjust the contrast to be more extreme and you may have better luck. you can try instead using a color layer to place the local colors as a starting point. greyscale also requires you knowing what the local value of color is. prime example is the blonde hair, if you wanted that you would have painted the hair much lighter in greyscale. just like you wouldn't paint a white material with a grey level of 20 unless it was in deep shadow.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHBRt8KBu8Q&t=39s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIjCfcJn9XQ

greyscale to color used to be really popular but it ends up in your work looking incredibly dead from the lack of hue variation in a piece. greyscale is good as a study to work out the composition and then get basic ideas blocked in but the sooner you get to direct color the better. greyscale to color is like a wives' tale for painting today, really not a better or easier way. better off using direct color once you're capable. in general anime style it's more useful to work with flats and save rendering for the end.

you should work on your shape design instead of shitty soft brush everywhere. i know what you're trying to do with the adductor pack of muscles but her left leg looks misshaped with the indentation happening directly opposite on that leg. you've got weird pillow shading going on and contradictory lights, it's hard to tell what the light source is and makes the image look like a mess. simplify your values and shapes. you didn't work out any of those problems in greyscale. a shitty greyscale is going to look shitty in color.

I can get the sketch down, and I can do one hell of a paint/render job, but I cannot into line art for some reason.
The thickness of the lines, the coloring of the lines so they blend well with your rendering, the steadiness of them.
Especially line art coloring methods. I always feel like my line art is so stiff and 2d over my 3d rendering.

I understand the look, it ends up looking unfinished a lot of the time unless you really refine it or mind the edges as you go. Constantly reworking areas like that is more annoying to me than linework and I hate digital lineart.

Selection tools and vector layers in CSP were a life changer to me. I started using vector layers and inking is so much easier. You get vector handles you can simplify and manipulate like paths, but with any brush. It also solves the problem of erasing every line that you draw through. Seriously, learn the vector tools they're very easy. I have vector on Y, I moved the vector eraser into the Y menu. Then I just use the eraser, control point, and simplify in that menu. In the control point tool you can hold alt and it removes a point you click on, clicking adds a point. It's like "double cheating" with the selection tools and reference layer but I get so much done now instead of getting pissed off at the tools. Flat with selections or "Do not exceed reference layer" checked.

I ink without pen pressure and with Starting and Ending (toggling on usually one or the other, starting is good to pick up on long lines) so I can focus on the lines. Something like the Real Gpen or Fill-in Mono Pen (Betta pen) with no aliasing on is ideal for texture. If I'm doing hair, I'll turn on ending then erase at intersections. You can always paint over the lineart too but I'm flying through the lining process now.

see what I posted here if you're using CSP >>4172893

If not, you can do it in a similar way. Ink with no size jitter. Repeat going over lines to make thicker, erase parts to make thinner/show they're in light. It's like using fineliners to get line width by stacking up lines/various marker widths or using whiteout. Make sure you're consistent in the brush sizes you pick. I have a size palette up and I'll usually ink the main lines with something between 4-8 for main lines and slightly smaller for secondary lines.

So if i want to git gud at drawing sexy anime girls the best way to improve would be to copy others said anime girls and try to 'reverse engineer' it. And as for style i am assuming find stuff i like and try to create some sort of synthesis of the stuff i like. I am also going to assume it would be good to try attempt stuff that is beyond my skill level to get out of comfort zone. Is this understanding correct? Is there anything i need to consider if most of it is going to be done on paper since most stuff i am going try to replicate is digital.

>> No.4174066

Here's how to study a specific artist's rendering.

1-find a piece by [insert target artist here] that has available both the finished rendered piece and a fully clean lineart, and attempt to replicate his rendering while at the same time looking at the finished, rendered version piece. I suggest ataruman, he posts his wips on twitter;
Try to understand what he does, reverse-engineer their work.

2-using a whole different artist's lineart, attempt to replicate [insert target artist here]'s rendering by looking at a group of his finished pieces, understand how he shades skin, different textures for his outfit, etc;

3-using your own lineart, do the same rendering practice as step 2;

4-using your own lineart, attempt at another original piece without any references from his work. If you fail, back to step 3.

I've done this, it works.

Hi again Anons, I am back from this thread
>>4133396

Bringing the next ten of the copy/study series of the mad quest I have been doing, currently at 31-40 at this point, out of the 97 the original gif had. Although I have found some duplicates which means some extra pieces will have to be added at the end. I might even miss some duplicates even.

As for my current feelings about learning it, when I was doing Inktober and doing some random anime girl I seriously did have some semi conscious urges to add parts to the face that I normally didn't and came from doing these. It felt weird not gonna lie. But also when I started the whole head I remembered to pay attention to the lower part of the head and make the cheeks larger and longer which I routinely did wrong in the past. I guess that can be considered improvement that has been derived from this mad quest.

Like last time I will post the total progress if the file isn't too large.

It's just about the right complexity for practical construction, though. This IS simplified, as opposed to drawing each individual ribs. If the kangaroo man is too triggering for you, you can see every other figure drawing teacher (vilppu, hampton, etc.) using roughly the same model.
It really isn't that difficult to memorize at all, not sure why you'd be skeptical about that of all things.
